As it is very cold outside in Chicago, can somebody recommend a shop either downtown, on the north side or in the western suburbs that I can drive to for the repair to be completed inside?

The installation was flawless and they used Sekurit glass.

well i dont know how picky you are but if i needed a window replaced i would just take it to the places i have always gone to since i started driving (i was born in the city and have lived in the city my entire life) trying calling:

just sent a buddy with an M3 to fernandez to replace a sidewindow and it was only 135 installed

As you've probably guessed from the subject, I need a new windshield for my '99 C4. State farm will cover the repair at one of their approved facilities past the $100 deductible. (They assured me that my rates would not go up and I would not lose any discounts).

Fernandez auto class (on western and diversey)
Arron's Auto Glass
and area auto glass
all on the northside, used them all, and these are the ones that seem to have all the glass in stock. just sent a buddy with an M3 to fernandez to replace a sidewindow and it was only 135 installed
Thanks for your help everyone. I ended up going with Fernandez Glass as they are only five miles or so from my condo and are on the State Farm approved list.
The did a nice install of Sekurit glass for $652 including the deductible.
It's amazing how clear a new windshield is!

NICE! see, its not the most prettest place but they get the job done and there is a burger king or fatt *****'s (rib shack) around the corner while you wait. maybe ill see you around in the summer.
There are a few good windshield threads I found when searching. They discuss not only price, but also different brands of glass, etc. I seem to remember people quoting numbers in the 600-800 range.
I am still amazed at how clear it is! My old windshild had 73,000 miles of pits and wear as well.

Yesterday I replaced my SECOND windshield this year. As you can see from the above thread the last one was on State Farm. This one was completely out of pocket, so I decided to give Safelite a try as they were the lowest price.
They replaced it at their shop in downtown Chicago the day after I called for $402.00. The installation was flawless and they used Sekurit glass.
The reason for this post is simply that I wanted to relay a
positive
review of Safelite's work.
