with concerns about the economy, it appears that the sports car market has cooled considerably recently, at least with respect to used p-cars.

Judging by his offer of $30k, which seems pretty firm, I'll be lucky to get one free cleaning thrown in...

Would you be able to replace your current car, that has the advantages of known history, known care and maintenance, perfect mileage, and new engine for what you are paid?

Update - I told the guy I won't take less than 32k - he's running his carfax and supposedly getting a cashier's check when he sees everything is clear - we'll see if it goes through.

The interior is a 9 out of 10 and the paint is in pretty good shape 7.5 or 8 out of 10 - no dents, but the bumper could use a repaint and there are a couple other fine scratches that have been touched up pretty nicely.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello brothers.
So...my dentist made me an offer on my car. I am thinking about selling it but am torn. The car is a 2000 Cab - black on black - 49,000 miles on the chassis, 1,200 miles on a brand new motor (replaced under CPO warranty) and a new clutch. The car is in excellent mechanical shape at this point and the engine is under warranty until May 2009. The interior is a 9 out of 10 and the paint is in pretty good shape 7.5 or 8 out of 10 - no dents, but the bumper could use a repaint and there are a couple other fine scratches that have been touched up pretty nicely.
I was going to keep the car for a while due to the new engine but I do have a 3 year old and a 1 year old with the third child scheduled to arrive on July 28th. The buyer is offering me $30,000 - I would guess that I could get a little more on the open market. I have an S500 I usually use as a daily driver but have definitely been driving the Porsche a lot and have fallen back in love with it.
I am so torn - what would you do???
seems low to me. I have a 1999 C2 and recent pricing was 29-32K for '99's. Some may be concerned about motor replacement but I'd love to have the comfort of a new motor with warranty until '09. Might also check out the latest issue of Excellence Mag which has pricing report for 996's. Good luck!
That warranty makes a difference. I think 30 is in the range, but a little low. $33K does seem right.
Then again, you've got a confirmed buyer with a real offer on the table. If you want a no-hassle sale, you could take the $30 without too much regret.
See if he'll cough up another $2000. Tell him that's just two crowns, or a few root canals.
UPDATE
: As to whether you should sell
at all
, which may be what you were really asking, I say no. Not unless you need the thirty grand for the expanding family. But with the stress of a newborn along with two other small kids, those Porsche drives may be critical stress relievers for you. Sell the Benz. Use the money for a minivan and some nice jewelry for your tired wife.
CP
Riad, that's funny.
My Boston dentist with the glitzy practice wanted $3500 for two crowns. I thought he was full of s---. so I got a second opinion. Turns out all I needed were a couple fillings.
Get yourself a dentist in an outer borough. The money you save will buy a lot of p-car accessories.
CP
BlackCab,
Do you really
need
to sell the car?
The reason I ask is, say you do sell.
What will you do if 3 months later you miss the car to point of regretting selling it?
Will you then look to buy another Pcar?
And if so, would you buy another car of the same cost level? Newer, more expensive car? Older, less expensive car?
Would you be able to replace your current car, that has the advantages of known history, known care and maintenance, perfect mileage, and new engine for what you are paid?
Possibly not.
Great questions and the answers are the reasons that I'm torn. Financially, I do not need to sell the car. I do, however, have four cars and should get rid of one of them. The Porsche is the least practical and I would have probably sold it in a year regardless. If I do sell now, I would probably throw the money into my kids' college savings accounts, drive the S500 for a year and then look at a 997 or a 996TT in a year or so (so higher price point, obviously...).
If you would take 32K for it, and not 30, offer the car for sale; You'll get the extra 2k if you're actively trying to sell it, If its not worth the trouble, take the 30K and put it towards the kid's college, Either way you have the power in the sale seeing as how you know what its worth and don't need to sell. If its worth more than 30K to YOU and you don't see any reason selling other than he offered to buy it, I'd hang onto it or list it a few places for sale around 33 or 34 and take 32K. just my two cents.
It sounds to me that you want out of the car and your dentist (who ranks only a couple of notches below lawyers) wants in at a bargain price. I would be inclined to give it to him ONLY because finding a real buyer is never as easy as some people think. Summer is almost half over and comes the fall and winter you might be hard pressed to find anyone interested. Holding out for another 2K may be more grief than the whole thing is worth.
30K seems low to me for a cab, but maybe with the mileage, that's all that it's worth.
It never hurts to ask for more, be it more money, free/reduced dental care, whatever.
Sounds like you're going to sell it eventually, regardless.

with concerns about the economy, it appears that the sports car market has cooled considerably recently, at least with respect to used p-cars. this is from my own experience selling, hearing others' problems with selling, and seeing the same cars in ads and on dealers' lots.
if you wanna sell (which sounds like you do), i'd go the no-hassle route and sell it to the dentist. $2k ain't that much to save some grief and risk not getting more than $30k on the open market anyway.
keep the car... sounds like its a nice one!!!! with plenty of years left. Whatever happened to the good ol days when people used to hold on to their cars and make it last as long as possible... Maybe Im turning inot my old man...
This is evidently not the norm on this board but I sold my 2000 996 C2 Coupe a couple of weeks ago for $36k. It was in near showroom shape, all maintenance up to date, brand new tires, not loaded but nicely optioned, with 15,800 miles. If you find the right buyer, you should be able to get more than $30k for your cab if the paint is not worse than you are saying. Good luck!
Good sale! i'd say low-mileage was the key, and perhaps a lesser supply of used p-cars in OK (?). from what i can tell, it appears p-car values are extremely sensitive to mileage. i mean, 15k sounds a lot different from 49k and would justify another $4k for most people, myself included.
I agree with you that the mileage was the main driver of the price. In addition, it had nothing to do with the supply of P-cars in Oklahoma. Our car was shipped out via DeMoise trucking to its new owner in Massachusetts!
inter-rennlister price: 33K
don't sell if u can keep it
the reason is the price for a 996 cab with warranty is buttomed around 30K, so u won't loss much even if you keep it for a year or 2 without driving it.
Update - I told the guy I won't take less than 32k - he's running his carfax and supposedly getting a cashier's check when he sees everything is clear - we'll see if it goes through. I truly, truly love Porsche's now that I own one and this won't be my last. If it weren't for having 3 kids under the age of 4, I would get much more use out of this car. Also, living in Los Angeles with the HORRIBLE traffic makes a 6 speed a second driver, and not a sustainable daily driver for me.
If the guy backs out, my heart won't be broken. If he does buy, I'll survive but will shed some tears as I wave goodbye.
Sounds like a logical and good decision, BlackCab.
I think I would do the exact same thing.
You have plenty of good things (3 of them) to keep you busy for awhile.
The next Porsche will just as special as this one!
Good Luck, I hope everything goes well. I am sure you will miss the car, but it's not often someone makes you an offer just as you are contemplating a sale. There will always be another car available when you decide to come back.
Best wishes to you and you family.
Thanks Don - I've always enjoyed interacting with you - your demeanor makes me miss the Michigan/midwest people that I grew up with. Even if this sale goes through, I'll still be hanging out here. This is an amazing group of people...
Thanks, and the same goes to you! Glad to see that you will still be hanging around... You do realize that the more time you spend here, the sooner you will be looking for a new car
Good Luck!
Well guys - the car is gone - I sold it for $31k. To me, that is an astonishingly low price and the guy that bought it is getting one hell of a car, considering the new clutch and motor. I am surprisingly more calm than I thought I would be, so I guess I did the right thing.
I really loved this car and I have gained such a love and respect for the Porsche brand. I also learned a lot during my two years of ownership (due in large part to this community) and I am 100% sure there are more Porsches in my future. I have to let you guys know that being a part of rennlist really enhanced the ownership experience. I also read MBZ and BMW boards, as I own those too, but nothing, I mean nothing, seems to come close to the rennlist community. I'll use my future Porsche purchase plans to justify my continuing to hang around on rennlist.
I guess the biggest reason I am not too broken hearted is that the stage of my family's development made it difficult to drive the car more. It's like having Jessica Biel in your bedroom but only being allowed to visit her 10% as much as you would like. I encourage anyone who is treating his 996 as a garage queen to GET OUT AND DRIVE if time allows. My 9,000 miles in two years was not enough fun and the car still depreciated like crazy, so drive, drive, drive!
I appreciate everyone's advice and support and look forward to seeing what the future holds (maybe I can one day get my hands on Phil's C4S!!!)
Congratulation, hope to see you around still! Maybe you and I will hit the 997 or 996TT forum at the same time. Lets hope so for both of us.
And most importantly congrats to you and your wife for the new baby!!!!
