Seriously, check with Sunset or Suncoast for their price on the OEM bulb.

The dealer (stealer) quoted me $300 to replace 1 bulb so I told them to forget it, that I will get a bulb off the Internet.

I think I need to replace the pair since the headlights are old enough that if I only replace the bad bulb I won't get a good color match.

If replacing the bulb yourself, pay close attention to the exact routing of the high tension wire that enters the can and connects to the bulb.

I think installing the bulbs is as simple as popping out the headlight assembly, replacing the bulb, and popping the assembly back in.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Okay, so after a couple of months of my passenger side Litronic headlight acting funky (it would sometimes shut off after driving 30 minutes or so) I decided to take the car in to the dealership to have it checked out. It turns out that the Xenon bulb (D2S) is on its last leg and needs to be replaced.
Has anyone else replaced the bulbs? The dealer (stealer) quoted me $300 to replace 1 bulb so I told them to forget it, that I will get a bulb off the Internet. My questions is... where? I think I need to replace the pair since the headlights are old enough that if I only replace the bad bulb I won't get a good color match. I am also thinking of maybe getting the bluer (but slightly less bright) Philips Ultnon D2S (6000 Kelvin). What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.
Just stop driving at night and save the money!
Seriously, check with Sunset or Suncoast for their price on the OEM bulb. If they are more reasonable, and I think they will be, compare that price to the price of the Philips Ultnon D2S. If there is not that much difference, get the OEM bulb.
I've only ever seen one bulb go out, it was on a 996 turbo (xenon fwiw) with about 150k miles. Symptom was you would turn on the lights and the one that was bad would flash on for a quick second then go out. Also what was a little weird was you could switch on the lights and have the one side flash on then go out, but if you removed the problem headlight and immediately put it back in (while leaving the headlights on) the bulb would come on and stay on.
You could try swapping the bulbs side to side and see if your problem follows the bulb.
Thanks. The symptoms were similar to what you described. The bulb would go on and then after about 30 minutes or so of driving it would flicker then go out. If I turn the light switch off and then back on again it would light up again and go out again after another 30 minutes. It's weird though that sometimes the bulb would stay on the whole night.
Anyway, the dealer confirmed what I suspected -- that the bulb was on its last legs. I think I will get a pair of these:

If replacing the bulb yourself, pay close attention to the exact routing of the high tension wire that enters the can and connects to the bulb. It cannot not be twisted into a different position because it can interfere with the auto-levelling operation. Make sure you put it back exactly as you found it. Hope it's the bulb, not the igniter.
I have the Litronic Retrofit Kit which doesn't have auto-leveling. I think installing the bulbs is as simple as popping out the headlight assembly, replacing the bulb, and popping the assembly back in. (At least I hope it is that simple -- please correct me if I am wrong.)
