Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ownre's manual)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. We all know the guys at Sears aren't really Porsche experts, the guys to ask are the ones that actually change the oil at Walmart.

In my 03, i have been running 20w60, was recommended by the mechanic at sears - said it was better for the 3.6L engine vs the 3.4l

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

FYI, my local costco (Edison, NJ) has Mobil 1 15-W50. 6qt/case for 29.16/case + tax.
this thread is not intended to be a oil debating thread, but apperently costco doesn't sell 0-W40.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
The recommended motor oil viscosity for the 996 cars are:
0W40
5W40, and
5W50
Other viscosity ranges are NOT recommended (please check your ownre's manual)
The mechanic at the Sears is totally clueless, and his recommendation is nothing but an unmitigated bullsh**
The neglcted fact is that the motor oil for the 996 engine is not exclusively for internal engine lubrication but also for other hydrolic components such as variocam. The recommened viscosity (low W/0-5) is exclusively for proper function of these compenets, particularly for those of you who have Variocam Plus. This issue has been addressed in the latest issue of Excellence magazine. You may even void your warranty if you use other viscosities.

Actually it's not the manual they need to check but rather the most current TSB listing the approved oils. You are correct on the weights but not on the source. Remember, the rec'd oil was actually 15W-50 in some of the early M96 years. That of course was superceded in the TSB's.
