When I do DE's I usually change the oil and fill to the middle of the fill range with new oil , then after the DE I will add back up to the upper portion for my daily commutes.

Thanks for the comments on the color -- its really a very interesting red, that changes color depending on light.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Rennlisters,
First off, I'd like to thank the members of this board that helped me a great deal in researching and finally making my decision - especially, Jon996 and Orient Express... whose path I now trod behind.
[Cliff notes]
2002 C4S, Orient Red/Graphite. Bose, Supple leather, Xenons, CD/Changer...

Like most (all?) of us here, I have long lusted for a 911. Despite driving a Honda S2000 (a truly awesome car) for the last couple years... I continued to devour Excellence and the forums. Trying out mostly C2s - I started to drive the 4S - the handling, the brakes, the balance were just incredible.
(aka: the rear end is drop dead sexy).
It was harder and harder to get back into the S.
Looking primarily at silver and black cars, I happened on a orient red 150 miles away. I scoured all the pics of Orient Express and Jon996 that i could find - spoke to the owner (who was great to deal with) - all records were present - PPI was clean - saw the color in person, thought it was perfect - and so it goes...
Thanks to all!
After being aong time lurker - its nice to finally be aboard.
I've modded nearly every car that Ive owned. After being in this forum I had such big plans for my 996 - SSK, fabspeed/Tubi, pSS9s... But for now, honestly, the car doesn't really need anything. The exhuast note is beautiful under throttle but quiet on the freeway; the suspension firm but much less jarring than the S2000. Why mess with it - for now...
Thanks for the comments on the color -- its really a very interesting red, that changes color depending on light.
How many of you all, daily drive your cars?
SAAAWWEEET!! I really like the Orient Red in pics...still have yet to see it in person. Looks amazing in the widebody...KNEW I should have waited to get a widebody....how much and how many miles if you don't mind me asking?
Congratulations Malakas! I also think the color is beautiful
I would clear those pumpkins right away, esp w/the color of your 996 (look what it did for orient express)
Just my opinion and taste. Either way I know your smiling hard.
i came from an s2000 before the bmw before the c4s now.
that **** end of the 996 c4s... wingless... is one of the if not best looking rear ends in autodom.
Thanks for all of the positive replies! The smile is truly ear to ear.
- yeah, I hang around too many greeks... so I figured it would be a unique, and humorous user name.
Where do you all suggest I buy the clears to replace the orange signal markers... is that pretty straight forward swap?
"Malakas" means STRONG in Filipino, so it's a good name in that regard, too.
I suggest keep the orange sidelights. I think it makes a nice contrast break to the Orient Red. Clears would look....ah... out of place and blaah in that sea of glorious red. In any other color, silver, black grey, blue... yeah, go with clears. But Orient Red -> orange sidelights.
Awesome, welcome. Beautiful color. The C4S is the best choice.
I was in a similar situation when I bought my 02 C4S two years ago. I didn't want silver or black either. I found Lapis Blue, it was a five hour drive each way but well worth it. I love the color and the condition of the car.
Interesting color on a 4s...I like the way it blends with the tail light across the back. Also the gray "S" matching the interior...It would really rock with a set of deep dish anthracite wheels...Enjoy and good luck.
Welcome, I picked my 03 up about a year ago. I have only added wheel spacers, clear side markers, and CF hand brake and shift ****. I love it and get looks and compliments everywhere I go. Enjoy...
Wow, that is a great color. Mine shifts color a bit too, from black to a sorta dark purple.
mine is my daily driver. Got mine 2 months ago and am loving it. Already been to three autocrosses and had a blast. Still amazed how well it handles but has such a nice comfortable ride.
Ok - so here is a question (that hopefully does not require a new post)...
Last night a good friend with Boxster S came over - some "spirited driving" ensued... nothing rediculously crazy, but a couple of runs on the expressway that were pretty quick etc... The car was totally perfect and smooth.
This morning I went to start it - it started fine, but a huge plume of whitish smoke came out right when I started it... then immediately went away. I drove to Starbucks - turned the car off. Came back 10 mins later, restarted the car... no smoke. Was that just left over oil in the cylinders / exhaust?? Common - or ominous sounding?
Thanks to all!!
The smoke usually happens after spirited driving but only if the oil level is at the top of the fill level. When I do DE's I usually change the oil and fill to the middle of the fill range with new oil , then after the DE I will add back up to the upper portion for my daily commutes.

LOL... thanks a lot. I really love the color. I admit to opening the door to the garage just to look her over a little.
But the props really go to my wife who took that photo - the light was perfect to show off the best of the paint.
The only problem is that the red seems to instigate street races with everyone from Neon SRTs to S4s... never really had that happen before.
i'm not entirely surprised. the 4s looks like a turbo to many an untrained eye. so you'll probably get challenges from those that want to see how their car stacks up against the big boys (especially SRT drivers. . .).
I first fell in love with the arena red 993 TT and now I have a serious want for the red or dark red wide body 996 cars. You are a lucky guy - love your car!!!
Thanks!
It just blows me away how effortless the speed is in a 911. But more than the power, which I think is just right for a street car, the car has tremendous balance. Yes the steering off-center is a little heavy (maybe just a carrera 4 thing) but it is still very communicating, and if you really throw it into a corner, it just powers out unfazed... truly a remarkable car.
Hey Malakas, that white smoke is not good news at all!!! I recommend you drive it to my house and drop it off for about 1 - 2 years so I may diagnose it for you
Your car looks FANTASTIC
Oh man does it ever, especially in the begining because you can't help looking around at every stoplight grinning, we've all been there. It'll "wear off" once the whole experience starts feeling normal and you start staring straight ahead.
Hey Malakas,
I go to Greece regularly and everytime I drive other drivers shout your name out at me!
They also accompany the shout out with a one-handed martini mix sign...
That's hilarious!
The car runs pretty good even in this Houston heat of 90+ degrees. The AC certainly makies a lot of noise... so I just drown it out with more throttle.
thanks to all who replied.
Beautiful car!!!!
I just sold mine and was thinking of an S2000 to "tide me over" 'till I'm ready to come back to Porsche. I saw a couple with under 10k miles for close to $20k. Seems like a great deal and I'm sure they're reliable and low maintenance and get great gas mileage. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Congrats again on the C4S!
I was offering my black 2005 S2000 with 15K miles for 21,500 - only because that was my lease buyout amount (not looking to make money) - you should be able to find a private party car around there.
To be honest the S2000 was a rock solid car - never had any maintenance issues, and was super fun at autocross events (never took it to a DE because it wont pass the broomstick rule, the roll bars are too low). The handling and gearbox are A+. The engine is great, but it has no power until you hammer on it over 5500 RPM - then it sounds likes a super bike. The only upside to having NO torque, is great gas mileage... its a very raw car that could use another 40-50hp. If you have the opportunity - its a fun car to own for a couple of years.

Welcome to the group! Gorgeous color, and must be fairly rare: I don't think I've ever seen an Orient Red C4, and I live in L.A. where you see Porsches every couple of minutes. (Arena Red 993s are a little more common.)
Enjoy!
PS: And +1 on keeping the signals orange.
Beautiful color, and nice departure from all the black and silver 996s out there.
BTW, what are the differences between the C4S and the older Carrera 4?
