computer says about 12mpg average across my last two tanks (some of this is by my own design as I've been running it out a little to get the car to wean itself off of the California 91 octane and onto 93, and ran BG-44K in the last tank, which the computer gave me 10.3mpg on)
Leading evidence: 'Run bg-44k in the last tank' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill i get way less than the computer calculates' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I set the trip meter and calculate every time I fill up.

Like smshirk, if I do the math and divde miles per tank by gallons filled, I get WAY less than the computer calculates.

Cleveland OH to Hilton Head SC running 67-75 mph with a few sustained runs of, ...ahhh....I forgot what speed, with two gas stops filled up to the first shut-off click, I got 28 on the computer and calculated 26 at the first gas stop and calculated 29 on the second.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking for a car for the wife
and want to justify a 996.
She drives 25k miles per year, freeway so it adds up.
EPA for these run aprox 16/25.
Is that about right or can I expect more ?
I've only had my 996 about 10 days but have put on almost 1000miles. So far, I'm right with you guys on mileage. 19 mpg(US) so far. I think it would be a fair bit better if I could stay out of it more......NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
Tim.
14-17 City and haven't done a "real" long distance trip yet so I can't tell you my HWY rating. I drive it quite wild though and rarely exceed speed limits
I get about 20 around town, but on a trip from Charlotte to DC (including a couple mountain climbs) I got 28.3 average for a 6.5 hour trip at highway speeds (80ish)
I've never bothered to calculate mine...I know this isn't the point of the thread, but I always figured that if I needed to know exactly what kind of mileage I was getting, I might as well get rid of the car.
I have a '99 C4, 6-speed, and track my fuel consumption continuously. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was getting 7.9 liters/100km (that's close to 30 miles/US Gal) when cruising at 70-75 MPH. However, city milage is often less than 20 MPG, depending on the degree of sporty driving. All in all, I would say that the fuel consumption is excellent, considering the power and weight of the 996.

15Mph combined highway, but mostly PCH in Socal.....on the "boat" escalade however a whopping 10.5mph!! yes but I consider myself lucky because in the Netherlands my parents pay about 12 bucks a gallon....
Everyone does better than me on the hwy. I get 18 to 20 around town, but the best I've ever done in 5 years is 24.4, and I was going really slow, on interstate, using the cruise control. It doesn't seem to matter how I drive, aggressively or not, I get around 22 most of the time. My wife thinks I am OCD about mileage. I set the trip meter and calculate every time I fill up. Something my dad left me with I think. I just have to know! I have 530i that routinely gets 30 on the hwy and I have to keep my foot in it a lot more to maintain my driving habits, so it must be my car. Not that I'm complaining, I wouldn't care if it only got 10 mpg, I would drive it anyway.
I get around 17-19 mpg in mixed driving. When I drove the car from DC to Montreal last November I averaged about 30 mpg on the empty Interstate going about 85 mph. I love 6th gear!
Do all of you that state high highway mileage (like 28mpg+) base it on the computer? Like smshirk, if I do the math and divde miles per tank by gallons filled, I get WAY less than the computer calculates. Computer says 28.5 highway, Real World it is more like 25. Around town computer says 20 mpg, REAL World it is about 18 mpg. Just asking...not trying to squash any dreams here...
Mixed driving I get about 18-19, on the computer. Summer, great weather with bright sunshiine, I may get 15

Though not spot on, dash computer readout and calculated were pretty close for me on that long trip. Haven't bothered with calculations since. I think variations on how full is the tank, was there an air bubble in the tank, etc, can make calculations kinda off.

. I don't trust onboard computers when it comes to mileage. Long story involving running out of gas (when I was a passenger) about 20 km outside of Kelowna.

No idea. My car doesn't have the computer to calculate it for me so I'll be damned if I'm going to crunch the numbers by hand. The engine is strong and the throttle response is sharp. That's what matters to me.
I go from Mississauga to Ottawa just about every week on my 2002 C4S,
and in cruise control I got as low as 8.1L/100Km, at 100 Km/hr (very boring),
and the computer shows 740Km per tank (slightly over 30 mpg, which is the
same as a Honda Civic)
when I step hard and red line it often, it goes to more than 16L/100Km,
and less than 350 Km per tank.

22-25mpg in general use
16-18mpg having fun in the canyons
24-29mpg on a long run on the interstate
9-12mpg at the track
16mpg at 135mph average at the Silver State
All according to the computer, which seems 5%/1mpg optimistic when I calculate each tankfull myself. It's been a pleasant surprise, how economical the car is on gas: over the last 2 years and 45,000 miles, I've spent more on tyres than gas...
I calculate both ways. Computer is very accurate on my car, within 2 percent (i.e., a few tenths of a mpg). FWIW, my speedo is also accurate up to at least 85 mph.
On my normal 130 mile round trip commute I normally get 20 to 21 miles per gallon. The commute includes a bit of everything but would be characterized as mostly high speed spirited driving with only a few miles of slow stop and go type traffic. I do notice that if I use cruise control on the interstate portion that is usually worth an extra mile or two per gallon.
Haven't we had a thread on this already?
I had a 2000 Tip - 19 lowest to 26 best overall. Probably 60-75% highway. Calculated every tank over 47k miles.
