(pun intended) It wasn't very hot here yesterday, maybe 65F when I took it out last night to test, but I managed to get the coolant temp up above 92C (used the cool climate control trick to read true coolant temp) .

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just completed the "radiator fan switch mod" yesterday, and I have to say- it's too cool! (pun intended) It wasn't very hot here yesterday, maybe 65F when I took it out last night to test, but I managed to get the coolant temp up above 92C (used the cool climate control trick to read true coolant temp) . When I was driving in the city, stop and go, and coolant temp started to raise, just hit the switch and the temps started rocketing down- love it!!!! I'm hoping for warmer weather just to see how well it works. Glad I did it- when I checked my fan relays, two were totally missing!! My right fan would never be able to come on at it's high speed! From what I have researched, the M96 01 engine has it's thermostat open at 83C (181.4F), and the preferred operating temp is from 90-95C (194-203F). Does this sound correct? Looks like the rear engine fan comes on when coolant temp is over 102C (216F), (or when the engine compartment is over 176F) so over 102C would be considered a little too warm. I'm just trying to figure out the desired operating range. I want my engine to get hot enough to stay healthy, but not so much as to stress it much. Plus- anything to keep my $12K 66,000 mile original engine happy! This will be my first summer with the '99, and I sure feel more at ease now.

my fans work normally and my operating temp seems to be in the 194-203F range. but it hasn't gotten really above 78F yet, so i'll keep an eye on it during the summer.
