Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well they just arrived in time for the NW Snow Season. This time I went with (225/40VR-18 Pirelli Winter 240 SnowSport & 265/35VR-18 Pirelli Winter 240 SnowSport ) I only went on a 15 mintue ride, and the Pirellis drive very nice, not bad in turns also. I also picked up a set of Moda R18 wheels which were mounted and ready to go.

POST 2Original post

Very nice. Rims look great, I have my left over 17" rims and dunlop winter m2s from my 2001 C4 so I mounted those. When those are done I'm going to try the 18" snows/rims. Keep us posted on how they work out in real world conditions. Looks great!!

POST 3Original post

Yea Im curious to see how a targa would do in snow... Since it is not a C4. Maybe someone already knows? -Jeff

POST 4Original post

Rims look great. May I suggest clear sidemarkers.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

HTML Code: Yea Im curious to see how a targa would do in snow... Since it is not a C4. I drove my Targa last winter with very little tread left on my M2 Winter Sports - No problem at all. Now with new Winter Sports, it will be that better - I really enjoy driving my 996 in the winter, also my boxster is a fun time also. It's cool to switch from one to the other -

POST 7Original post

RJ: how much snow we talkin about? Im from chicago but I'm finishing up school in CO so id prefer the traction of the C4 BUT I LOOOOOOOOOOVE the targas glass roof.. -Jeff

POST 8Original post

I hate to sound stupid, but what are clear sidemarkers?

POST 9Original post

You might be better off sticking with the 17s. I was told that the smaller wheels work better in the snow because of extra tread. Has anyone else heard this?

POST 10Original post

Diameter of the wheel doesn't matter. What matters is the width of the tire. You want a narrower tire so that it pushes and packs the snow down so the threads can bite into the snow. My C4's summers are 265 in the rear and the snow tires are 255 in the rear. The fronts stay the same sime though. My C4 with snow tires have no problems with Chicago winters BTW. I can drive up several hills and my driveway whereas my lexus with all seasons would get stuck. Bobby

POST 11Original post

Yes, this is correct which is why I went with the 17" wheels to begin with... they do look a little odd on the C4S, they were less noticable on the 2001 C4, but oddly the C4S rides better with the 17" wheels.... odd. I absolutely love the way the car handles in the snow with the 17" wheels and AWD. I've driven in 5"-7" of snow with no problems - just take it slow and use common sense! It's also really fun to see people looking at you like you're crazy because you are driving 100K+ car in the snow

POST 12Original post

RJM, Your set-up for the Targa looks nice. I had a set of Pirelli Winter 240's on a BMW, and they were awesome. On ice and light snow, that BMW was better than my 4WD SUV--although not quite as good from a standing start, it stopped and cornered better. I've put my 996 away for the winter, but that's basically because I'm too lazy to keep it clean with messy roads; I would have no hesitation at all driving it it the snow. I think winter driving is great fun and excellent practice for your driving technique--when else can you drive "at the limit" while going only 20 or 30 mph. caf '02 996 Targa

POST 13Original post

OK! I'm ready now baby! Got my new set of wheels (set off a Turbo bought off ebay) and tires (265/30/18, 225/40/18 bought off a Rennlist member) and I'm all set for the winter. Drove the car today. Some interesting observations... 1. Dispite being still quite large and on the 18" wheels the curved edges at the top make it look like the wheel arches are not full any more. 2. Much lighter steering feel than normal. 3. Not as much tire noise. So far the car feels pretty nice with them on albeit not quite as tight. Certainly not punative in the dry though so no complaints. I do want to find a nice big parking lot near here that has none of those concrete dividers before it snows and I am going to head there once we get some Barry

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Surprisingly enough the Winter Rubber handles better than my M2 Winter Sports, In cornering and stopping I was very impressed. If they perform well in the winter, then I will be very happy. I must say, out all of the cars I've owned, the Targa is by far my favorite, Bar None, 986 S comes in second

POST 15Original post

thats crazy...a guy just came into work the other day w/ a c4s w/ modas...those are the craze of late...but don't u think that looks alittle too good to drive in the snow
