Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anybody know if PSE from a 2001 3.4 engine 996 car will work on a 2004 3.6 engine 996 w/ X51? There is one for sale on ebay but am not certain if it will work OK. Anybody know for certain? Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

The 3.4l and 3.6l PSE systems do have different part numbers in the Tech book.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

great, thank you. i'll not chance it and get a new one from brandywine or if anybody is selling a pre-owned one for the 3.6l engine please pm me or let me know.

POST 4Original post

this doesn't prove it will not work. 996 C2 and 986 S calipers have different part numbers but they are interchangable. different part number is for different colour in this case....

POST 5Original post

It will work and you'll have to reuse your existing exhaust tips. The newer model is improved by means of the flow both internally and because the bypasss pipe is a larger diameter. I had a 1999 996 with the older PSE and I now have a 40 Jahre with the newer PSE. They don't sound exactly the same but either do the engines themselves. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

POST 6Original post

ok. but the point is not whether the pre 01 cars works fine with their (older type) PSE, and post 01 cars with newer exhausts.... they should work......that is how it should work. question is if we can use newer PSE on "older" i.e 3.4 cars...... it does fit, for sure...external dimensions are identical.i have no idea though, if it will work. u stated and it is correct that newer PSE model is improved by means of the flow both internally and because the bypasss pipe is a larger diameter..... have u ever wonderd why? i have seen on a porsche mag " 911 & porsche world" that 996 02 engine is 87% new....compare to pre 01 cars.... this should make a difference as well..... none would like to use something which not works on their car, and propably cause a prob, i.e loss of power....( one possibility), ECU misreading probs.....(second possibility)

POST 7Original post

If the question is "does the newer PSEW work on older 3.4 engines", I'd have to say yes and it will improve performance (a guess here) based on the improved flow characteristics of the newer design. I don't wonder why Porsche updated the PSE because looking at the older design, the small pipe does seem limiting. That said, I doubt highly that the muffler relies on that pipe for much of the flow but rather for resonance and sound. If all or most of the exhaust has to travel through that pipe, I can see why the bigger pipe on the newer models would improve everything. If it was up to me, I would not install the older PSE on a newer car (either regular 3.6 or X51 3.6). I do wonder if the older PSE would decrease power on the 3.6 and especially on the X51 equipped cars. Does this answer the questions?

POST 8Original post

I have fitted post -02 boxes on a 99er. They fitted perfectly and were noticeably smoother sounding with the added flexible bellows on the inlet pipe.

POST 9Original post

Yes, those flexible bellows make a huge difference. I forgot about them.

POST 10Original post

The older version will bolt up but the sound might not be what you're expecting on the 3.6. I feel the newer 3.6 PSE sounds deeper and less raspy than the old 3.4 PSE. If you're curious buy my old set , they're still for sale in the classifieds (sorry for the shameless plug).

POST 11Original post

newer PSE does sound deeper indeed....but have in mind the newer engine does sound deper indeed....

POST 12Original post

The 3.6L standard sounds deeper because the exhaust system changed in '02 as many has complained that the 3.4L was too quite. The PSE with larger pipes (new) would sound a little louder, but it does not mean the 3.4 would not work on the 3.6. The question is if the price for the used PSE is worth it for an exhaust that does not exactly match your car. FWIW GHL systems are nice and the special at $679 is hard to beat for new exhaust.

POST 13Original post

I think both PSE models would give you an extra 3-4 hp... Porsche is very conservative in their claims... they say its just sound... I've heard both... they both sounds different but both are very good... the older PSE sounds more exotic than the newer one... raspier... hitting more octaves on the sound spectrum... the new one sounds deeper and throatier... can't go wrong with either...

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all of the great feedback. Jetskied, where do you see GHL systems for $679? I know there is a member discount for GHL but I don't get that number by doing the math unless I am looking at the wrong products. Can anyone point me to this special as well as any sound clips? Thanks -

POST 15Original post

They listed a sale on this forum just a couple of days ago for the mufflers only. Its $799 if you want the tips included. Go call Brian at [phone removed]. They are real helpful. There is some sound bites if you do a seach and for the record I'm told the GHL is a little quiter than the PSE and Fabspeed. I personally like the sound.
