I think that the previous owner used to take them to "Fast and Cheap Tire" to get his tires changed, as I think that a blind 5 year old could have done a better job of changing the tires without messing up the edge of the rims.

Anyone know of the cheapest place to buy black logo wheel center caps like the ones I have on my car (below)?
I have just acquired new wheels and they came with colored center caps - I'm not a big fan and want to replace them with black.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Sorry but I cannot help you with your request, but hey, start a Poll:

Sorry couldn't resist...besides I have had a few already
Phil, you can't use the current caps with your new wheels? If not, there are a couple of sets on Ebay
Porsche Black Center Caps #1
or
Porsche Black Center Caps #2
Now, do I also need to come up there and install the wheels for you too?
Tim, you are losing it! It was Wayne who posted on his center caps, not me. I think you really are older than I am. Plus, I have colored center caps on the wheels my car came with, and like them
I would gladly swap, but to be honest I think that the colored caps that I have acquired with these wheels are not in great shape.
Let me take a look to see if they clean up okay and I'll let you know.
To be honest they don't look that great. They might look better when I get some 409 on them, but right now they don't look in good enough condition to go on my car.
As for getting the wheels installed. I'll probably do that on Wednesday. I think that they will need some TLC before I put them on the car. I think that the previous owner used to take them to "Fast and Cheap Tire" to get his tires changed, as I think that a blind 5 year old could have done a better job of changing the tires without messing up the edge of the rims.
The wheels are in good shape, but certainly a lot worse than I'd expect for 2 year old wheels. It would be more than generous to call them in "excellent" condition. The tires are also a lot more worn than the seller conveyed. The rears are on the wear bars (not 10%) and the fronts are closer to 50% tread, not 90%.
OK, OK it was late last night or early this morning when I posted that. I guess I had the PA connection in the back of my mind.
That just proves that you are always on my mind, Dave!
Wayne, that's a shame that the actual condition of the wheels are not as they were "advertised." I would contact the seller and voice my displeasure and see if he will make a small adjustment in the price.
If he is not willing to do that, post his name here and we can make sure none of us ever buy anything from him again! It is a shame when you can't trust another Rennlister to accurately disclose the condition of a product. Screwing our Rennlist "brothers" on a transaction is heinous!
Tim,
I'd thought about contacting the seller, but I'm not sure that it's worthwhile. The experience was not my best and I think that moving on is the best course of action. I found the seller to be paranoid and penny-pinching over insignificant issues, even when I demonstrated that I was operating with total honesty and transparency. He's a med. student in debt so some of his penny-pinching can be excused, but perspective would have been a good thing as well considering that there was bickering over $10 on a $1300 transaction. In the end I just said "screw it" and did whatever I could get get the deal done and get out.
I was worried at the time that the photos of the wheels were posted that they were taken at night with a flash - this has the effect of washing out the details in the image compared to photos taken in daylight. I contacted the seller and obtained high resolution photos which I inspected and to the best of my ability spotted all of the visible flaws and was comfortable with them. I then contacted the seller and was told that the wheels were around 2 years old maybe more. I was told that he had the wheels on his car for about a year. - I figured how bad a shape can they be in?
The reality as I said is that the treadwear was beyond described (in fact the rear tires are beyond the wear bars and in worse condition then the ones I removed from my car earlier in the year. The tread on the front tires comes up to the top of the E in "liberty" of a quarter, which is a guess at 50% treadwear, but it's probably more when I think about it.
On top of that the colored caps look old (and arrived with two of the metal emblems detached from the wheels and in need of gluing back on).
Don't get me wrong, the wheels are in "good" condition and much as I would liked to have paid less for them I could probably say that I paid on the high end of what they're worth. When I first saw them I did regret the transaction and even considered not putting them on my car, but examination of them in daylight they look better and can probably be fixed to my standards with some micro-scratch remover and some polish. There are some areas where the finish is flawed, but probably not to the level that someone who is not a perfectionist (me) would notice.
Overall, it was a buyer beware kind of experience.
Wayne, sorry about the negative transaction. I can understand two people disagreeing to some degree on the condition of wheels, but the tire wear issue is BS. Agree with Tim, it wouldn't be a bad idea to expose this guy (even tho he is a newbie doc in debt) to Rennlisters so we won't be lulled into dealing with him.
Exactly - disagreement on condition, well, that can easily happen - it's all a matter of perspective and how high your standards are. The wheels are certainly over 2 years old and the Crests appear to be a lot older than that.
Tire wear is different. I was figuring that I'd use the tires for autocross, but to be honest they're not even in good enough shape for that and I'll probably end up just trashing them. Saying that the have 10% tread left when you've already worn down the wear bars is pushing credibility.
I'm intending taking photos in daylight later today.
Jasoncoker was the seller.
The transaction wasn't perfect - some of it was Jason's fault, some of it was the fault of Bank of America and Paypal for screwing up the funds transfer, but the level of paranoia was unjustified when it was obvious that I was doing my best to sort things out and operating with openness and honesty.
At one point I even teleconferenced him into a discussion with the manager at Bank of America that was trying to help me get the transaction sorted and he was still being unreasonable about the manner and timing of when he expected me to complete the funds transfer. The wheels were sitting 5 miles away from where I work and 15 miles from my home in the UPS depot and he put a stop on their delivery and threatened to sell them to someone else in PA. There were several occasions where I almost told him to sell the wheels to someone else and refund my paypal transaction, but I kept telling myself that this wasn't worth the hassles for the sake of wheels that I wanted.
In the end I paid his credit card fees on the Paypal transaction and I paid the fees that he caused by putting a stop on the delivery of the wheels. Unnecessary and trivial costs, but he made the experience painful. I spent all of Thursday night on the phone, rather than spending it with my wife and son. Hopefully it's an experience that I never repeat and certainly hope that i never have an experience like that with a Rennlister.
It goes without saying that this guy needs to be at least informally "blacklisted" from Rennlist. Sorry this happened to you. I feel the same way whether it's a $1000 or $100 transaction. Sometimes, we tend to be all too trusting. There are weasels to be found even on Porsche discussion boards!!
Thanks!
Yup. I'm open and honest in everything that I do. I operate with integrity and expect others to do the same - sadly the world isn't as ideal as I'd like.
I wouldn't call Jason a weasel, that's a little strong. I'm sure that he's a nice guy, but he was not the perfect seller. He was irrational and was "generous" in his description of the goods he was selling.
I'm also sure that because I didn't think it reasonable to pay his transaction fees (which I eventually paid) and my bank messed up the funds transfer that I'm not the perfect buyer, but when I saw an issue I went all out to fix it and get the transaction completed.
Well: Glad to hear you finally got your rims, it sucks tho tht new tires sound so imminent. I can commiserate re: some of these internet transactions with our rennlist brothers, I was given a major run around about selling my 3.6 mufflers, so that I finally just said I'm keeping them. Oh well, you can't win them all, but if the rims are straight and true that is most important. You should have them roadforced to make sure they are really as advertised asap before putting them on the car.
Good luck can't wait to see them.
Okay here are the photos after I hit the wheels with soap, water and 409.
it pains me to see the two rear wheels without their emblems.
I've not yet treated the micro-scratches - I'll probably do that after installation.
I thought you'd get a kick out of seeing 90% and 10% tread remaining, respectively.
Using this tread wear guide
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=51
I discovered that the front tires have approx 4/32" remaining tread - that puts them close to needing to be replaced. Hmm. 90% remaining.
Yeah, I think the car will look great when the wheels are installed. I'll have to get more photos on Wednesday.
As for the tires, yeah, yikes is one word to use... I had them in mind for autocross use and to be honest it's not even worth the $100 that it would cost to have them mounted on my existing wheels. I'll probably end up trashing all of them. Before the wheels arrived I had considered selling the 2 front tires, but I don't think it's worth selling tires that are close to needing replacement.... pity that I had to pay to ship the dead weight of tires across the country for no reason.
From your pics, I'd just ditch them and treat yourself to new tires to go with the wheels. Shame about the shipping. I still think this Jason character is a weasel. Just my $0.02!
Well, I intend transferring my Bridgestones from my existing wheels into the new wheels, as they only have around 3500 miles on them. I could get a new set, but I hate to retire such a new set of tires.
As for the purchase - well, this place has some great people that are highly trustworthy - we're a family - it's a pity when someone comes along that breaks that trust. I guess it's a good indicator when someone with 110 posts and a 944 comes along with something to sell that you might want to steer clear of them, or at least be highly cautious.
It was funny that he was so paranoid about getting screwed, but in reality he was the more suspect character. Given the choice would you trust an active member with 4000 posts, or an infrequent poster with 100 posts who doesn't have a reputation that he cares to protect?
Sure thing! Those new rims look excellent!! A nice black crest will make them really nice!
I'm still partial to the Twists - I now have a set of 18's, and a set of 17's! But those sport rims are sweet - what do they go for?
Thanks! I took the black caps off of my turbo twists today. I also repaired the two broken colored caps.
My car might be running with colored caps until Wednesday - just looks wrong. I dropped Sunset a note to inquire about buying a second set.
I just just put the black caps on the Sport Design wheels and they look incredible together.
I'm with you on the thought that colored crests look wrong! Maybe they look better on darker cars, but to me, the mono-chromatic look of black and white or black and silver is much more pleasing to the eye than the look of colored crests.
YMMV, of course.
I just swapped into my winter set yesterday - turbo twists, just like yours! I like them but not a s much as my Classic IIs.
I
love
those ones you bought. They look very "refined". Can't wait to see them on!
Tim wasn't paying attention... you know older people need to take mid-afternoon naps.
Used I've seen them as low as $800 and as high as $1200. I bought mine for $1000 + $300 of shipping and other charges.
I think I saw 3 sets for sale in the last year and jumped on this last set as an early christmas present.
I like your Classic IIs also. It was hard to select the right wheel. I was looking for something stylish, but not too ricey.
As for photos... hopefully we'll get to see how it looks on Wednesday.
I'm running out of mods to do... I thinking tints and exhaust tips might be the end to this madness.
Sorry but, colored crest is the way to go, that small detail is not gonna contrast against the color of the car, its gonna contrast the color of the wheel. Its awesome with the silver wheels! Itll look great with any color car!
You're welcome to your opinion, but those of us that own white cars would disagree.
Considering that I have both colored and black emblems and can make the side by side comparison on the car I know which looks best on my car.
I think it worth the effort, but I'll let you be the judge of that. Here is a link to the "amberectomy" DIY, which has a lot of "before" and "after" pics.

Okay, after several weeks of waiting, here's the final result of installing the Sport Design Wheels - before and after (courtesy of the photo in my sig.)
It will take a while to get used to the new look - it's different. Hopefully it grows on me.
My installer had real problems getting those crappy rear tires off of the rims. He's normally very good, but I had to leave the room and couldn't bear to watch him struggle - the joys of removing tires that are worn out and have sat around unused for a year. We got there eventually.
Hello All,
Wow, heavy words are so lightly thrown (to paraphrase Morrissey).
So there are six Rennlist threads bashing me without so much as a rebuttal on my part. Nice mob mentality.
Wayne Devonport aka Wellardmac has given you his side of the story and I feel that it is appropriate to give you mine. I saw the threads a couple of days ago, but was too busy to respond as I have worked 65 hrs. in the past 5 days in the emergency department.
Wayne, you should have contacted me first before insulting me publicly to express your displeasure. You should have contacted me immediately and maybe we could have worked something out. I could have refunded your money and sent the wheels to someone else on the list. Instead, I actually emailed you to see if you had installed the wheels and to find out how you liked them on your car! Boy, was I naive.
So, here is the transaction from my standpoint:
I wanted to sell the wheels locally so as to avoid having any type of misunderstanding about the wheels and I also did not know how to ship them across the country. This much was stated in my ad. If I were trying to deceive someone, I would not have stated, Local sale preferred, but I can ship if you really want em. I had a line of people who wanted to buy the wheels and I went through the requests in the order received so as to be fair to everyone involvedeven though several potential buyers were local!
I then used half of one of my few days off to go to load the tires and go to the UPS Store for shipment. During this time, I discussed with Wellardmac the cost of shipping, packaging, and insurance. He stated that he needed to open a new bank account to link with PayPal b/c he was a self-described security freak [not my words], and wanted a discrete bank account attached to it. He offered to pay by credit card and I explained that I felt the wheels were a good price and therefore did not want to pay the extra credit card fees. He stated that he would pay via an account transfer instead. I agreed and the wheels were packaged for shipment. I had to make another trip to the UPS Store to sign my credit card charge and was informed that after I had left, Wellardmac had called the store to make sure that the wheels were actually there even though he had heard me discussing the packaging information which I then relayed directly to him.
At this point, I no longer had the wheels ($1000) and had paid the associated shipment costs ($267). So, in good faith, I was out almost $1,300 with only a promise of payment from the purchaser! I was under the impression that I would be paid immediately, but instead did not receive payment until the next day. I still was not worried, however. It turns out the buyer also paid with an E-check instead of an account transfer. This E-check would take over 5 business days to clear, incur a nominal fee, and it was for the wrong amount (only a trivial difference, though).
The day before the wheels were to arrive at Wellardmacs house, I noticed that the PayPal check clearance date had now been postponed almost 15 days (until 29.Nov.)! I tried to contact Wayne to find out what had happened, and began to get nervous about the transaction. I called UPS and had them hold the wheels at the shipment hub until we could straighten everything out. It turns out that there was a PayPal error which was compounded by a B of A error. Wayne spent a lot of time talking to these vendors via telephone and conferencing me in. I suggested wiring the money to my account as a resolution for all of this (and having B of A absorb the fee in light of their error). The transaction was getting very unwieldy at this point, and I just wanted to resolve it. I also wanted to receive payment for the goods prior to their delivery (now 6 days from when I shipped them).
I told Mr. Devonport that I would not release the wheels until I was paid. He was upset by this, and felt that I was needlessly prolonging the transaction. Obviously we have different points of view on this, but I would never expect someone to give me goods before he received payment for them.
So, Wayne ultimately paid for everything with his credit card. I noticed that he had sent too much money and refunded him the difference immediately.
Now, as far as the wheels not being as described:
I answered every email promptly and accurately. I sent Mr. Devonport ten high resolution photos of the wheels (I am no photographer but I did the best I could). I never stated that the wheels were two years old. Rather, I said that they had been on my car just over a year and in storage just under a year. I thought that the wear descriptions were accurate and had already explained to Wayne that he should replace the rear tires. The fronts were not on the car very long, and I am not sure what the quarter test proves since these tire are borderline DOT-R tires and likely do not have as deep a tread as other tires. He also told me he was going to replace all of the tires since he had recently purchased a new set. I did not send photos of each tire for this reason. Whatever, I did not willfully misrepresent the tires. Finally, all of the centercaps were on the wheels and intact when I dropped them off at the UPS store. I do not know what happened en route.
Mr. Devonport got $3,300 wheels for $1000. Even if he refinished each one (which is not even necessary) he would still have gotten out for less than half price. He had all of the photos to examine prior to his purchase also. I had wanted to sell the wheels locally and I really wish that I had. I think my actions detailed above show that I was not trying to defraud another Rennlister.
So, to summarize the names I have been called by Wellardmac in these threads:
suspect character, irrational, unreasonable, paranoid, penny-pinching, jackass, and untrustworthy. He also stated something to effect of: What do you expect from a guy who drives a 944. He impugned my character and integrity by insinuating that I am dishonest and have broken the trust of the Rennlist community. All of this was done before even contacting me to discuss things first.
Furthermore, other sheeple in these threads have called me a weasel and said that I should be blacklisted from Rennlist.
This is all very mature and speaks volumes about those involved.
I have said my piece, thanks for reading.
Sincerely,
Jason Coker
P.S. I had no idea about passing on the credit card fees as I am not a vendor. Wayne, your fees were refunded this morning.
Thank you for ther refund. If there is anything in my comments that does not reflect reality, then please PM me and I will correct the comments.
Otherwise, we have both stated our positions, you refunded the credit card fees. I regard the transaction as closed.
