When that paint job went to a complete mess after the track day, I had to take everything off, so I used a chemical paint stripper and a metal scraper.

Given my luck with their caliper paint kit, I decided it's probably safer to just replace the decals if they come off.

Suggestion

One tip that I found really helpful, and employed with great success on my dad's car, was to use 400 grit sandpaper to prep the surface instead of a wire brush...this greatly reduced the number of coats needed to get a good finish and adequately removed all surface imperfections.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A few weeks ago I tried to paint my calipers with the dupilcolor system from Pep Boys, which was rated up to 500F I think. It was either the paint or my skill, but that paint job did not survive a track day. The paint started melting at some spots and changed color very quickly. Also, brake fluid would take that paint off easily. This weekend I tried to paint it with the G2 kit. That paint is rated up to 950F and it has a hardener in the kit. I did not have a chance to take it to the track yet, but I think this system will probably work. After the paint dries and hardens completely, it would not come off upon contact with brake fluid or caliper cleaners. I have a feeling it will hold under track conditions as well. We shall see.

POST 2Original post

Turned out very nice. What did you do for prepping the surface? Is that a brush on or spray on product?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First time with the duplicolor I just roughed up the surface with a wire brush. When that paint job went to a complete mess after the track day, I had to take everything off, so I used a chemical paint stripper and a metal scraper.

POST 5Original post

How do you take the calipers off? What part do you not paint when you do this?

POST 6Original post

I did mine with the G2 kit as well. No problems whatsoever. I did do clear coat after I applied the new porsche emblem on it. My996A, these kits are meant to be painted on while the caliper is still attached. They provide a cleaner, and the paint/brush to do this. Do a search and you will find some DYI's on this.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7065 Follow these instructions to remove the brake pads. After that, remove the brake line from the caliper using a flare nut wrench (10mm I think?). Do not use a normal wrench because it will probably strip the nut. Then remove the two bolts holding the caliper to the hub. They are 10mm hex bolts. The bleeder screws can be removed with (11mm?) flare nut wrench. Caliper remove is not essential, but it's definitely a lot more comfortable. My996A, I painted the whole caliper other than the dust shields on the pistons, and the mounting point of the caliper to the hub. I think the color inside the caliper close to the dust shields will deteriorate very quickly, but we shall see. I thought about clear coating over the G2 paint, but the best high temp clear coat I found was 500F temp from duplicolor. Given my luck with their caliper paint kit, I decided it's probably safer to just replace the decals if they come off.

POST 9Original post

You should have gone with yellow so that observant porsche-o-philes would think that you have ceramic brakes.

POST 10Original post

You should spray them with clear if you didn't. It helps the look, the wear and takes out imperfections in your painting

POST 11Original post

hey congrats... looks nice.... looks like i am going to be doing the same thing.... as long as you don't need to take off the calipers i'm good with that.......

POST 12Original post

I did not emove the calipers to paint mine. Here is my Caliper Painting thread from a year ago. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...light=Calipers

POST 13Original post

hey thanks a lot..... how's holding up so far?

POST 15Original post

The calipers still look like they did right after I painted them. They are holding up very well.

POST 16Original post

Folks, I'm going to be doing this too. Black car, so I'm painting them yellow! 1) Where can I find the G2 paint kit in store? Autozone and Kragen didn't have them in. I'd really not wait for FedEx/USPS if I can buy in-store vs online. 2) Also, some folks seemed to have used a metal bristle brush to roughen up the caliper surface for better paint adhesion. What brush would you recommend? I'm a little worried about damaging the calipers with a hard metal brush. What about rough sandpaper? 3) Did you put a layer of clear coat on top of the decals when you used the G2 paint kit? I know the guys using Duplicolor did ... just making sure if I can be lazy with the G2

POST 17Original post

I've painted both my calipers and my dad's calipers with the hi-temp engine spray paint you can get at the chain autoparts stores, and they are both holding up great. One tip that I found really helpful, and employed with great success on my dad's car, was to use 400 grit sandpaper to prep the surface instead of a wire brush...this greatly reduced the number of coats needed to get a good finish and adequately removed all surface imperfections. Good luck.

POST 18Original post

Ok, that's a good tip. Do you guys know where I can buy the G2 caliper paint kit in-store? UPDATE : They don't have any distributor in San Diego, CA - so no in-store. I was about to buy Duplicolor but couldn't find that in yellow in-store either! They had red, black and blue (blue?), but no yellow. So I've ordered the G2 paint online - it'll take 10 days to come since it can only be shipped ground (hazardous material!). I'll be done with the brake pad and rotors today so I guess next month I'll have to jack up the car, take off the wheel again. Sheesh! I was hoping to get everything done in one go.
