Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In real world tests the pre 02 and 02 cars ran the same 0-60 times due to the additional weight of the 02 cars.

Suggestion
If I can give you my piece of advice, don't buy one where you have to "stretch" your wallet; it might make you feel uncomfortable when cash is low to repair/service or just use the car.
Leading evidence: 'Run same 0-60 times due' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'bit more than i had planned' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair /service or just' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
It was probably a bit more than I had planned on spending, but knowing that I'd be covered by the factory warranty until '06 was some consolation.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm in the market for a 996 and am hoping I can get a bit of adivce from the experts. This will be my first Porsche though I've wanted one for essentially my whole life. Originally, I was thinking a low mileage '99 to 2001 C2 as my self-designated budget is $45k give or take. However, after doing some reading (here and other places) I've seen that there are a number of upgrades on the 2002 vs. pre-2002. The question I have is besides the engine what are the actual differences. I'm also assuming that the 2002 models are considerably more expensive (at least what I've seen so far) but would be happy to hear other opinions.
Thanks!
I recently bought a 1999 coupe with 35,000 miles on it. We drove a 500 mile loop to drive/look at a dozen cars. I was looking for a 2000+ model but could not resist the 1999 we bought. It checked out perfectly and has zero issues. When I started I was looking at newer models but now that I have my 1999 I find no reason to be dissatisfied.
Plus I have enough rolling stock already. For a fourth or third car a 99 is more than sufficient. On the other hand, yesterday one of my friends showed me his new 2004 BMW 760Li and another friend showed me his new Audi RS6 (450hp). Combined I think that's about $200,000.
I recently bought a 2000 C2. I was in the market looking for a 2002, but it was outside my budget. Now I have this and am pretty happy.
If the car feels good and is within your reach go for it. If I can give you my piece of advice, don't buy one where you have to "stretch" your wallet; it might make you feel uncomfortable when cash is low to repair/service or just use the car.
I have driven both many times. The 2002 had a different tone to the engine and was slightly more powerful. Interior is a little improved (glove box amongst other things). The turbo lights give it (to my eyes) a lower and longer look. They look probably better as well. You can also have the switch to PSE which is to my eyes very convenient.
Last but not least. Go and drive the cars and drive many.
Good luck and enjoy.

From the sales brochure: ...headlight system derived from the 911 Turbo. More discreet is the careful reshaping of the front and rear fenders, bumpers and air dam. The result is 25% less lift in the front and 40% less lift at the rear for improved high speed stability.... Reinforcements to the body structure have resulted in a 25% increase in torsional rigidity for crisper response and enhanced agility. The standard 17" wheels weigh almost eight pounds less than the previous design, while the optional 18" wheels are lighter by over 24 pounds. The front air ducts have been reshaped to increase the flow of cooling air to the radiators by 15%"
You also get 20 more HP, a glove box, better cup holders and a glass rear window in the cab. I test drove a number of cars and spent a few $$ more for an '02. You could definitely tell the difference when you drive them back to back.
There are always improvements each year. 2006 cars will be better than 2005 cars and so on. That's why people say buy the newest model year you can afford.
OTOH, any Porsche is an excellent car so long as it has been well maintained. My suggestion would be to figure out your budget first, then go for the newest car your budget will allow.
In real world tests the pre 02 and 02 cars ran the same 0-60 times due to the additional weight of the 02 cars. The reason the 02's feel faster is torque, the addition of more mid-range torque is great for driving around town. I drove an 00 daily and have an 02 now. I think the 02 is a much better car, however, I loved my 00 as well.
Whatever you do, get an extended warranty, I would never own a 996 out of warranty... Both of mine have eaten one transmission...

Also, the 3.6 L engine (02's+) have variocam plus, where it varies the intake and exhaust timing. Having driven both I would say the torque change is noticeable, also fuel mileage (not insubstantial these days) is supoosed to be a bit better on the 3.6's. I would prefer the 02's and feel the price difference between an 00'-01' vs. an 02' are justified, but if you are maxing out at a 99' then feel comfortable about getting that too.
I was in the market for 99-00 996 cab as well. I did a very extensive search and found very few really nice 99 and 00 models. But for me, the new headlight design, and the rear glass window was more of a deciding factor to go with a 2002 cab. There are really nice and loaded 99-00 996 out there in well maintained condition. Unless you take it out on the track, you won't notice too mch of performace differences in day to day driving.
I'm a new first time Porsche guy too Kinger, so certainly no expert, but I pondered the same questions and eventually went with the '02 996. It was probably a bit more than I had planned on spending, but knowing that I'd be covered by the factory warranty until '06 was some consolation. And, I have been nothing but thrilled with the car. It's performance on and off the track is beyond belief. Having DE'd alongside drivers in earlier 996s I'd guess the performance upgrades previously mentioned are noticeable. All said however, find the car that fits you and your budget, you won't be disappointed in a Porsche.

Well, I'm going to start driving '99 through '02's this weekend so we'll see. However, initial research shows that the low end on the '02's seems to be around $55k and that's probably too far out of my budget for me. However, we'll just have to see once I drive them.
Thanks for all the input!
99 C4 here.
The 02's are great, even better the the 99 - 01s, but the incremental difference (20 HP, minor cosmetics, etc) was not was not there for me to trade up.
On second thought, the glove compartment alone would have been worth it!
