Suggestion

With my Boxster S, I would drive at higher revs than I do with the 996, usually cruising at or over 4K, and I rarely used 5th gear.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Amigo's I just wanted to see what is the avg shift (RPM) that most of you utilize, I basically shift each gear at 4K RPM on the avgerage. What about you, and is there any negitive side effects from always holding a late shift ?

POST 2Original post

I'm usually around 4k as well. I do love to open up on the highway on-ramps, though! There's nothing quite like the incredible roar you get above 5, especially with the PSE.

POST 4Original post

Interesting topic I was thinking of posting. With my Boxster S, I would drive at higher revs than I do with the 996, usually cruising at or over 4K, and I rarely used 5th gear. With the 996, I find myself upshifting and cruising with low to mid 3K revs and often use 5th gear. Of course this is civilized driving ... then there are those other times. I also find myself downshifting and slowing down approaching a tunnel so I can step on it as I enter the tunnel and really hear my PSE. Anyone else do that? But to answer the question, I usually shift at or over 4K if the car is warm and unless I am trying to get on it.

POST 5Original post

Usually 4-5.5K RPM and hardly use anything greater than 3rd if I am in an aggressive driving mood. Speed limits on suburban roads range from 50-60 kph.

POST 7Original post

4-5K in normal driving. but it really depends on the gear. i tend to shift at lower RPMs as i get to the higher gears, unless i'm really driving aggressively. it's probably due to how fast the RPM climbs in 1, 2, and 3 gears.

POST 8Original post

I take it to the redline at least once every time I drive it...

POST 9Original post

Normal driving: 4000-5000 (depends on what gear). I like to cruise at 3200+ I rarely use 5th and basically never use 6th. I got these rpm habits from my 993 which I cruised at around 4000 rpm.

POST 10Original post

You gota remember that these cars are racing cars underneath all that jazzy interior. They are made to be driven hard so there should be no damage taking them to redline regularly .....well.....apart from the speeding ticket that is What you have to careful of is changing down at high revs. Do that and you can easily blow your engine and/or gearbox......and the ECU will record you did it

POST 11Original post

For me it depends on whether or not the car is fully warmed up. When I first take her out I'll shift at 3K then when the car is running hot I tend to shift in the high rpm range - 5-6K (unless I'm just tooling around town). I find that 5-6K tends to give me a smooth transition.

POST 12Original post

Hi, I heard the Tip will auto shift when at redline. So if you accidentally downshift at high rpm, does it then shift up a gear? Does ECU record such event?

POST 13Original post

I dropshift shift my car once at 7000 rpm-ONCE. Let's just say it wasn't happy. But normally shift at 3.5-4 k. Regards. Mike

POST 14Original post

epoints: the TIP won't let you downshift if it would cause redlining. Try it. Also note that even in "M" mode, it will upshift (close to) redline, and downshift when slowing before you stall.

POST 15Original post

I believe these cars have rev limiters on them to prevent you from blowing the engine. As coincidence would have it I hit the rev limit this morning driving into work... first time that's happened to me in over 3 years of p-car ownership.... ooops. And yes it will show up on the computer.

POST 16Original post

I am always hitting the rev limit when going from 1st to second 3 times out a 10 trys. Usually I try shifting at 6700 but shifting to third is easier to gadge. Though this I do less because I am doing over the speed limit by at least 20km. And can shift right into 4th or 5th by that time.

POST 17Original post

On the street about 4000. Merging onto a highway about 7000. On the track 8200 is fun.

POST 18Original post

Slight spin on the survey. At what RPM do you let the engine drop to before downshifting? And what is the lowest RPM you let the engine rev, especially in 2nd?

POST 19Original post

At what RPM do you let the engine drop to before downshifting? I rev match when down shifting. This means I bring the rpm up to what I the rpm will be in the new gear. When doing it to slow down I shift to the lower gear when I know it will be below 5000. When going for power I will do this when the I know the new gear will give me 4000 - 6000 And what is the lowest RPM you let the engine rev, especially in 2nd? 1100

POST 20Original post

The rev limiter cuts the fuel on the way up through the RPM band, no damage should you hit it but not the best thing for the engine. However, there is nothing to prevent a mechanical over rev should you drop to a gear that is to short for the speed you are running, this often results in bent valves and damaged pistons... aka the "money shift". In other words, do not downshift to second at 90mph... Both types of overrevs are recorded by the ECU.

POST 21Original post

I'm pretty sedate on the street. Upshift at about 3-3.5K rpm, and use up all 6 gears, cruise in 6th. I don't engine brake, I coast in whatever gear I happen to be in, push in the clutch just before the engine dies, then place it in first when I'm at a dead stop by the light. I rarely go back all the way down to first so long as the car is moving, prefer to stay in second unless the car almost comes to a dead stop or I'm going up a ramp/steep hill. I get about 22 MPG . I just wave at all the cars that rev and squeel their tires at me, smiling while I say "Fool". The track is a different matter. I rarely go below 3.5 K rpm, blip and rev match every downshift keeping it in the power band never skipping a gear. I think hitting the rev limiter is a big no-no but upshift close to redline. I will occasionally short shift depending on the track and traffic. I don't even dare figure out MPG, but I have to gas up during lunch for fear of running out of gas before the end of the day. Hey, Sloth. How about a race to see who makes 2000 posts first ? I can't outrun your GT3, but I may get you on this one.

POST 22Original post

Based on the fact that we are even on posts despite my 10 month lead, I am sure you will make 2000 before me. Not sure if that is a good thing or not though. Can anybody say obsessed, I know my wife can.
