Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My 03 has used 3 quarts at 5900 miles over 10 months.
Leading evidence: 'Use 3 quarts at 5900 miles over 10 months' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil level at the dipstick and do so' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
While the bars are a nice touch, I always check my oil level at the dipstick and do so before every drive (but I only drive her once or twice a week).

Suggestion · Original poster
The on board computer runs those "check oil measurement" tests and tells me that my oil level is on the lowest bar.

Suggestion
Typically I try to keep it 1 bar below max on the dash gauge/ dipstick if the car is to be run hard.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2003 C2 with only 3500 miles on it. The on board computer runs those "check oil measurement" tests and tells me that my oil level is on the lowest bar. I have added 3 quarts of oil over the 3500 miles. two questions: does this amount of oil usage strike you as normal or more than normal? And, should I be adding more oil to the tank to get the "bar" to read higher than the lowest level? (I can't get a good read from the oil stick).
If the lowest bar on the obc is solid, then you are 1 qt down. if the lowest bar is flashing, you are more than 1 qt down. That does sound like a tad much, but not totally out of line from what I have seen of 996 cars during the first year or so. Give me a call if it persists...
at 3500 miles i was at 4 qt, at 6000 miles and i'm on my 8th qt. They keep telling me it's normal...2003 C2.
On another note my advise to you is always keep it nearly full, so only one bar is blank. I had engine problems and the first thing the dealership asked me was if I was putting enough oil in, why keep it on the border of oil starvation?
Think about it this way, the more oil you have in the car the less particles per million of polutants and debris you will have.
Note that it can be nearly as bad to run too much oil as too little. You run into issues like foaming, and end up losing protection.
Net: I'd keep it between the bars, and be careful not to go too far over.
That is a lot of oil consumption IMO, my car for example has required about 500cc total additional oil in nearly 5 years, and I track it on a regular basis. Typically I try to keep it 1 bar below max on the dash gauge/ dipstick if the car is to be run hard.
That sounds like a lot of consumption. Probably have a leak (did you look at the bottom or the valve covers?). In my '01 C2 I change the oil every 7500 miles (once at the 3000 mark), and have never had to add oil that I can remember. By 7500 miles I'm usually down to the third bar from the bottom. I wouldn't let it get any lower.
