1999 C2 Cab 996 2 weeks of noisey starts that settle down after warm-up. Sounds like lifter clatter to me on one side of engine only. Using coolant, needs to be topped up (low light comes on) every 1 k. And now, white (non-oil) "smoke" or vapor out of the same side that has the clatter at start up...passenger side. Smoke goes away after warm-up. Other than that, all vital signs are good and the car just doesn't use oil at all. My first thought (hope!) was head gasket. Dealer hasn't seen it, we just chatted over phone. He says they never have head gasket probs. ?Cracked head??. Anyway nothing is good about this situation on a meticulously maintained 996 (just did the 70K maintainance etc. I never even rev the thing over 4k until its warmed up. So, wish me luck but I ain't holdin' my breath, George

I guess the saying goes, never own a 996 out of factory warranty! Sorry to hear about the mishaps, hopefully it's a quick fix.

Had the same issue with 00 Boxster. Dealer could not duplicate while in for 30K service so I sold it and bought a 00 Cab. No noises or smoke yet with 37k on the clock.

My 2000 Cab has been doing that on and off for years. White smoke is normal especially if you razed it the day before. The clatter is normal so long as it goes away fairly quickly (when the engine warms up) and it's not a loud clatter. Sounds like tappets The noisy start is probably that the MAF needs replacing and/or the alternator bush/bearing is screwed. If your that worried get it checked but it sounds all normal to me.
