It's my understanding that a bad production run by the seat manufacturer caused this problem so Porsche will replace those seats in the cars that are at risk.

Seems that during recent testing by Porsche that when hit with sufficient force (large SUV, 2 passengers, going 40-50mph) that the metal bar in the seat back would not only snap but would spring FORWARD through the seat.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Talked with the service manager yesterday and verified that my replacement seats are on order for my 03 C4S (they are somewhere in Atlanta) and should be here soon. What was interesting is this recall is more serious than I realized. Seems that during recent testing by Porsche that when hit with sufficient force (large SUV, 2 passengers, going 40-50mph) that the metal bar in the seat back would not only snap but would spring FORWARD through the seat. Now SNL would probably make a skit showing that the occupants were now really anchored to their seats So if your vehicle is affected, I would definitely recommend you getting your seats replaced in short order. Thanks to Loren's TechWeb, I also found that a TSB has been issued for the fuel guage issue (basically it doesn't register correctly if you put less than a full tank of gas in) so that will be taken care of as well. The fuel pressure pipe has to be re-routed. Since I was on a roll, thought I would mention the new ignition TSB. Seems that some vehicles will have a near impossible time starting their cars. If this happens, you need to turn the wheel a little bit, turn the key a little, turn the wheel a little more, etc., etc. until the ignition goes past the 1st stop then it should work and you should get it replaced. He showed me the ignition ... best way to describe it is that it looks like a very elongated water nozzle for your garden hose. What happens is a small break occurs near the 1st position in the plastic ring that is an insert inside of the ignition core (for lack of a better description). Anyway, I thought I would pass on what I found out. Have a great Memorial Day weekend everyone.

POST 2Original post

Russ, Thanks for that information...... Are you telling us that if your, our or anyone's 996 is involved in an accident where the seat's back snap and spring forward that Porsche would replace them? Please send me any link or information that you have on this where one may benefit... Thank you, -Eli

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Eli, No, that's not my understanding. If your seats were somehow damaged due to an accident it would be the responsibility of the insured party / company to replace any damaged seats. The recall pertains to certain 2003 996's (C4S and C2 are all I know about for sure) and ONLY to SOME of them. It's my understanding that a bad production run by the seat manufacturer caused this problem so Porsche will replace those seats in the cars that are at risk. Hope this helps.
