Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi. I live on the 928 board, but I have a friend who was considering a 2002 M3, but then rode in a '99 996 and totally loved it. Can anyone tell me what things you need to watch out for on the 996 besides the RMS? Is there a site I can point my buddy to that lists things to look out for on a PPI? How about a FAQ or something similar? Greatly appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Andrew, I think a PPI is a great start and will cover all the major issues. Is this from a private seller or a dealer? Rob

POST 3Original post

I agree with Riad on the PPI, will save you headaches down the road on any issues. Also try renntech.org, Loren has a good section on 996 (major/minor) maintenance schedules and what to look for. It is not realy a buyers checklist but has some great information areas of concern. follow linky: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...maint_menu_car

POST 4Original post

If it is a stick, make sure he has someone dump the computer codes and read them out....looking for over rev events.....ther are two kinds, both are logged......neither are good, but one is WAAAAAAAY worse than the other. If a tip, read out is still important....... Condition, mileage, tire wear, brake condition, shocks.....just basic things to look at. And, obviously, any sign of RMS. I have a 2000 C4, cab, tip....83,000 miles, zero troubles, runs like a top, best car I have ever owned.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sale is private party. Car that he's looking at has 37k miles and is a manual trans. I already recommended the PPI. Gretch- Thanks for the tip on the codes. But I have to ask, is the C4 really the best car your ever owned? Just ribbin' ya.

POST 6Original post

ummm 37K is quite low for a 99... make sure it's original mileage and not "rolled back"

QUOTE] Can you elaborate on this? What are you looking for, and what does it take to read the data?

POST 8Original post

It is the best "all around", good service and cheap to maintain..... But I still LUST for my 928....... High maintenance girl, but WOW!! what an adrenelin rush...... you know Andrew, some girls you marry, some girls you don't....... You love 'em all, just in different ways......

POST 9Original post

Type 1s are really no big deal. Those occur when you hit the rev limiter on the way up. Of course, the rev limiter cuts off gas so you do not do any damage, so I wouldn't worry about them in the least. Type 2s, well, that is a whole other matter. Those are the ones you hit due to misshifts, etc .. . or other ways you can wind the motor up over redline despite the rev limiter. There are different categories of Type 2s, some of which are worse than others. It really depends upon the car and the frequency/nature of Type 2 overrevs.

POST 10Original post

[QUOTE=Fred2] Commonly known stuff, but here is a thumbnail on it...... Over rev from throttel driven, rev limiter kicks in..... ok event, don't want to see too many of them.... Over rev from tranny driven, mechanical, rev limiter cannot prevent.....WAY BAD event, don't want to see any of them, zero, nada, zilch. The computer logs both kinds.

Additionally, one of the great selling points of the 1999 996 is the fantastic option code 220, Limited Slip Differential.
