Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. The 4th generation seal p/n is 997 101 212 00 and that's what I got a few weeks back when they replaced my RMS.
Leading evidence: 'Replace rms' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil level often' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

As far as taking it on a trip, if it were me, I'd keep and eye on it and check the oil level often.

It only needs to be wet on examination for them to recommend a fix.

They adviced me that it is so minor that I could safely take it to a planned wknd drive of ~800 miles and to get it repaired after.

The dealer informed me of a "minor" leak they would like to get repaired under warranty.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I never noticed any oil drops on the garge floor. The dealer informed me of a "minor" leak they would like to get repaired under warranty. They adviced me that it is so minor that I could safely take it to a planned wknd drive of ~800 miles and to get it repaired after.
I had always imagined RMS to be an obvious leak or none. Could there be such thing as "minor" leak which is safe to be driven on a long trip? Yeah, i am really wanting to take her on a trip after the winter hybernation,...real bad.
Thanks.
Others with more knowledge on the subject will probably chime in here but it is my understanding that it "seeps" before it "leaks". In some cases, you can notice some oil seepage around the seal and it may not actually be leaking yet. As far as taking it on a trip, if it were me, I'd keep and eye on it and check the oil level often.
Good luck
It only needs to be wet on examination for them to recommend a fix. Do it under warranty. You will get the 4th gen RMS, which seams to work well.

The search is your friend. You will find pages upon pages on this topic (including discussion on your very question)..you are correct the topic died of a beating a long time ago but someone seems to shoot it about once a week just for good measure.
The short answer is it is a leak. Some leak more, some leak less. There is no good evidence it is anything more or less, nor is there good evidence that it is a symptom of doom in the near future. The biggest risk of a RMS leak possess is oil contaminating the clutch (which is very rare). A majority of leaks do not need immediate attention. A weeping style of leak is the least severe. For all you know your weeping RMS seal has been leaking since the last service. The amount of oil lost is insignificant and you would never know but for looking at the bottom of the car. If the car is under warranty by all means get it fixed. If not, then very likely there is no hurry to spend the $800 to get it fixed. Wait until you need a new clutch (save $$$ on the labor) or until the leak gets severe enough that you notice oil on the floor (which may never happen).
Anyone have the P/N for the 4th gen seal? Mine is in the shop now would like to verify which part they are using. This is no big deal, about 3 hrs to drop tranny assy and replace. Then see what happens, hope this one actually works.
This is exactly what I've done for the last 12000km and during that time the engine has needed less oil than almost any car I've owned before (less than 2 qts). As long as it stays like this I'll just wait for the clutch replacement.
I spoke to my mechanic,...and as you guy's had mentioned the new generation seal supposedly has worked well. He agrees that it can even wait a few more thousand of miles with no problems. So, I'll wait till it needs a clutch or gets close to warranty.
Thanks
When I got my car a few months ago the guy I got it from said it might possibly need an RMS replacement, I got the price lowered ; ). Anyway when I got it home I threw it on the lift and found that it was swetting oil. No big deal I figurerd I'd buy the parts and fix it when it became a problem. I stored it for a month, as long as I could take without having it on the road, and after that time it had leaked about 4 drops. I figured an RMS change was in the near future for me, but that was five weeks ago and I haven't seen a drop since. If "I" were you and your warranty was coming up I would think about changing it. If "I" were you and I had time on my warranty I would hold out. Is there any chance that RMS leaks and non-use could go hand and hand?

The jury is still out on the 4th generation seal since it just recently came out. There is a German 996 guy on renntech who had this seal put in and it still leaked.
TCR. No they do this on a hoist, the tranny is removed, Most P-car Mechanics do this in under 4 hours.** Tool Pants This is interesting because I have the newest seal it had a 997 Part Number, and I did see some oil drops on my garage floor the other day. If i replace this seal it would be the fifth, and I know I can get a new motor. I will wait until it has to go in for service and get it done. It can leak 10 times, i still love the car, and it has no effect on me what so ever. Its just oil
The 4th generation seal p/n is 997 101 212 00 and that's what I got a few weeks back when they replaced my RMS. So far it's fine but that's way too early to tell.
