Hi, I bought a 2004 Porsche C4S. The car is still at the Dealer being serviced. I was soo excited, i never asked about the Sound System or even turned it on. Anyways i wanted to what how many speakers this package has and where are they located and what kind of speakers they are (Tweets, Mids, Subs). Thanks

And yes there is a sub with the vents behind the back seats. As far as Ipod integration, it's been a bit of an issue with MOST vehicle ('03- and later), but Dension is releasing an integration kit soon (finally!). Do a search and you'll find some very recent threads on the subject.
I listen to the stereo all the time. The exhaust is nice enough to overpower the sound. Bose is a nice option. It's one of the better factory system. I don't care what people say about Bose. It works for me.
Yeah it's true that the Bose in my pcar is better sounding than the Bose in my CLK, but I do tend to turn it off a lot to listen just to the PSE...better sounding than any radio station or CD!
The Bose in the coupe has 12 speakers. There are 2 subwoofers in the rear deck. The convertible only has 11 speakers. There is only a single subwoofer in passenger side kick panel.
Although it is not up to the Mark Levinson system (sounds as good, if not better, than any aftermarket system out there) in the new IS, I would agree that the Bose is the 996 one of the best OEM systems.
I can not say the same for other Bose systems. The Bose system in the Miata I had was horrible. Only highs and lows, no mids. It was truely a waste of money. The Bose system I had in my G35 was certainly better. A lot more fill, some mid-range and decent (but sharp) base. It was worth a little less than its price. The G35's systems biggest problem is a lack of an equilizer.
The 996 Bose is far better. It has crisp highs, smooth mids and a powerful fill of base. It is in one word...balanced. I am particularly impressed at how smooth the base carries through the rear sub and door woofers. It is the first car I've owned where I actually turn down the base. For the money, I don't believe I could do any better going aftermarket. This system is a lot better than people give it credit.
Last, I recently test drove a new Cayman S. After driving and listening to my Carrera, I was really disappointed in the Bose in the Cayman. The system is very unbalanced with far too much front speaker and far too little base.
Thanks for all the INFO about the Sound System. Now onto the IPOD Adpater. I dont get the Dension thing. Whats up with it. Anything in Aftermarket that i can use now?
hmmm...that's interesting since both the US and Canadian order guides list 11 speakers for the coupe and not 12. Could it be that they count the 2 back subs as only one? Just curious.
Zookie, the only solution for ipod right now for MOST systems is using an FM modulator where you "tune into" a spare FM space. You won't be happy with that in TO; we have waaay too many FM stations crowding the airwaves and you constantly get crosstalk. I bought one of the best FM modulators (Podfreq) and tried using it in my benz. Totally useless in the city, so now I only use it when I travel and rent cars.
Be patient and wait and see how the Dension system works and handles displaying playlists, etc...
Not sure about the order guides, but here it is straight out of p. 74 of the 2004 factory brochure:
"With 12 speakers (11 in the Cabriolet and Targa) located throughout the cabin..."
I can also confirm there are defnitely 2 speakers in the rear sub box. I took the sub out when I had to access the rear upper shock towers to swap suspensions. Both speakers actually face down into the rear deck.

Not sure if you have or are considering joining the Porsche Club of N.A. (PCA) - I would recommend that you do. The Upper Canada Region (based in T.O. but covering Ontario) is having their Shift-into-Spring event at Pfaff on Sunday, April 30, starting at 10:00 a.m. No biggie if you're not a PCA member....I think it'll cost you $5 otherwise to get in. You can probably join the PCA at the event.
I have the Bose in my Targa (same set up as the convertible) ... it is one of the better OEM upgraded systems I've had. Doesn't compare though with the Mark Levinson that I had in my Lexus (now gone.)
