Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just curious. The car in question is a 1999 c4. If the Porsche dealership replaced the engine in 2005, would they have replaced it with the newer 3.6 engine? Thanks Vince

POST 2Original post

Nope. But you can tell if it is a new or refurb engine based on the serial (?) number. Hopefully somebody will chime in to help out with that.

POST 3Original post

Frankly, I wouldn't sweat the new engine that much. Figure that you have an extra year of warranty remaining where you wouldn't have had any from a 1999 before it. But Vince, I'd make sure that car is in 'loved' condition.

POST 4Original post

No. I asked the same question when the engine in my 2000 C2. They replaced it with the same engine (refurbished with some updates). It looked brand new and it has been perfect ever since.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was looking at the new engine as a plus, since it still has the factory warranty until 1/07. I would guess that a refurb. engine is as good as new. Right? Edward, the car looks very 'loved', but w/out high res photos, it is hard to tell. The search for a car has not been easy, but I am learning.

POST 6Original post

was looking at the new engine as a plus, since it still has the factory warranty until 1/07. I would guess that a refurb. engine is as good as new. Right? A refurbished engine has an unknown number of miles on it , and was sent back to the factory for a rebuild because of some major problem. Why would you think that rebuilt engine is as good as a new engine?

POST 7Original post

fast1 is wrong...Porsche uses almost none of the wearable parts when rebuilding an engine. They re-use the cases etc. but anything that is a wear item is basically replaced. Those engines are basically new.

POST 8Original post

So you are saying that they replace the crankshaft, camshaft, heads, valves, etc. and that they merely reuse the existing short block?
