Anyways Tool Pants, I'm not interested in your tests but I have installed the gauge cluster and thanks to Raffi and others who helped me installing it in 15 minutes "without breaking anything." I'll upload the diy on saturday when I have time for some html work.

I too have used both rennlist and renntech for help, and have had all my questions answered and learned alot about my car.

Henry just gave me a check for $500 from the sale of the DVDs but I bet he has not repaid himself.

Since Tool Pants so adamantly requires that everyone own his DVD before asking questions on this board, I will purchase one (or how many there are) so I can start asking my questions freely on this board.
Post a link to a purchase site.
Hope you did not give up already, and I never siad you need to own one in order to ask a question. I have been answering questions on Porsche boards for almost 5 years, before and after our local Porsche group spent almost a year filming many, many projects. I have posted the instructions on how to remove the cluster 100 times over the years, and how to remove the hazard switch connector. On this board, renntech, and several other boards. Jeff
Hey parkman, that was totally out of order.
Jeff always helps out. I have never seen him once mention you have to purchase his DVDs first. Actually, I promised to buy a set of these some time ago but have yet to get around to it. Nevertheless he has many times helped me out and never ever even hinted that I "must" buy his DVDs first.
You'l see always chip in to help out. I am amazed at your comment.
In fact IMHO its people like Jeff, Loren and Don which make this Forum (and renntech) what it is. Without them as far as I am concerned it would just be a chat room. Give it up for Jeff and give him a break.
I agree Scouser and Poursha, Jeff and Loren have helped me out many times and I do not own the DVD. In fact I may have helped with one I don't know? I have been on this forum for sometime now and also other boards and not once have I seen Jeff or anyone say you have to "Buy This" before you can ask anything. That's insane! I think Jeff and friends do these DVD's for fun, for a hobby...not to make insane profits and quit their day jobs....right?
I think this post is just a useless flame and should be closed...
okay... first of all my apologies to tool pants. Tool Pants and Loren have been of tremendous guidance to my diy projects for he past several months. For that I thank them with all my heart. However for the past couple of posts that I have made here and on renntech (under a different i.d.) I have noticed him advocating the purchase of his dvd ... as such
Quote:
"Some day a 996 owner will buy our DVD where we show how to do this on several cars. Plus we need the beer money for when our local Porsche group works on cars. The DVD cost far less than 1 broken part.
Next parkman will want to know how to remove the hazzard switch and the connector to the switch, after he breaks the switch trying to pull it out the wrong way like you 996 owners tend to do and after he gives up trying to figure out how the connector is removed. "
Yes, maybe I will break parts trying to do things myself. Yes maybe I'm not the most technical person in the world. But for you to just simply tell me that I should buy your DVD instead of you telling me in 4 sentences like raffi did on how to pull my damn cluster out, well... that's something entirely different.
You (tool pants) have helped countless people on this board, and your advocates clearly show your support. I, too am an avid supporter of helping people out on web boards. I am on dtm power, twinturbo.net, 6speedonline, and other forums, and whenever I can I will post my input or knowledge on how to help people do things that I have already done. Fine, yes, I probably will need to know how to remove the hazard swithc, and connector to the switch. As Raffi said (and I have now done) you just pry it out with a butter knife. that one sentence is shorter than your one paragraph telling me how I will break all my parts just like all of "you 996 owners."
Needless to say, I will purchase your DVD if you want me to, just so you will give me the free advice that I need time to time from message boards such as rennlist. The reason that I haven't purchased it thus far is because on the index of your dvd, there is nothing that interests me or nothing that i have not done already to my car. How would I know that your dvd contains information on how to remove the cluster? is that part of the obc hack or something? I already have obc. I already put in my short shifter (and yes I did post a diy on this board with pictures for it) and I already changed my headlights tail lights and steering wheel (and yes I did post a diy with pictures AND video for it). Did I charge anyone? no. but that's your perogative. i'm sure yours is much more detailed and i'm sure it took you a lot of time, money, and effort to compile all of the information contained therein.
Needless to say, once again, I apologize for being a jerk about the whole dvd thing. Like I stated previously, I was just irrate by the last comment about breaking things and how "you 996ers" etc... I know that Tool Pants is an important part of this online community and I have first hand experience of getting great information from him. If I didn't I would not have opted to purchase a DVD that I don't think will benefit me (given that I have already done all the things listed on the index) just to get some additional advice from an expert like him.
I don't know if you read this board Loren, but your help is greatly appreciated here in VA. I know about 5 members of your site together that we speak about you as if you are God. Whenever we have questions, you never fail to come through. and our support of your site will show this.
Anyways, hope I didn't offend anyone to the extent that I can no longer be a part of this community, because it has and hopefully will become a part of my daily life.
Regards...
I been around for a while and not only on this board, and I have seen over and over Jeff & Loren help other members altruistically with their technical knowledge. And I have learnt a lot from reading their posts and responses. They are an incredible asset to this community, I just hope they don't get "tired" of us
So parkman I think you should reconsider what you said or how you said it since you yourself have been helped quite a bit since you joined too.
Erm,
We still don't know where to buy the DVD from!!
Could you give us the info Toolpants, as well as info on shipping to the exotic corners of the world where required. I for one would love to have a step by step video of many common tasks on the 996, but then again, i think my local Porsche dealer might want one too, going by the quality of their techs
Best regards,
Steve B
Loren and to some degree Jeff have also helped me out on numerous projects. One way to give back w/out purchasing the DVD is to become a contributing (no minimum) member of Loren's website:
http://www.renntech.org
So many messages about DIYer DVDs. When I started out Boxstering there was nothing except guys typing messages on the internet on how to do things - and some of the info was wrong or I could not follow it. It was me, myself & I taking my car apart on my driveway by myself so I could figure out things worked. I made mistakes and broke parts while I was learning. When I though I knew enough I would attend our local Porsche group meetings and help out. I learned more than I knew. Years later I started to set up a work on cars day for local owners. Then I kind of got tired of the repeative questions on the message boards. So - let's make a DVD.
Then the question was if we should charge money for the DVD. I do not have a digital movie camera and the only DVD player I have came with my notebook computer. I had to ask someone for help, and that someone was Henry. He spent $1,000 to buy all the stuff needed to make a DVD. Then we started to film, and film, projects. Sometimes we had had to do it all over on another day on a different car as the film did not come out the way I wanted. Many people helped out. I know how to work on a car, but know nothing about making a DVD. People like Kirby and Loren and many other local owners, Raman, Ray, Doug et al, would come by and help when we were filming. This takes hours. Then we need to eat and drink. Then some of you local owners show up with the wrong parts or no parts. I have paid for and bring with me the most common parts when we have a work on cars day. I give them away. I buy special tools so that I can work on your cars.
I do have a day job and I am paid $225 per hour. Henry just gave me a check for $500 from the sale of the DVDs but I bet he has not repaid himself. Not bad for a year of work. My $500 will go to renntech since it accepts no sponsors, for refreshments, and parts. If you cannot afford $40 for a CD then there is 15% off for renntech menbers. You 996 folks will pay hundreds of dollars for a painted/fiber console or a plastic bit, or a cluster with the silver/white trim and dials, but $40 will break you. Or, you will break parts and have much frustration.
I think parkman is frustrated or he has already broken something. He is on renntech under a different user name. I have answered several of his questions there and here.
Kirby, I think you may have been filmed when you did Val's center console swap. You can ask Henry if he goes on the Saturday drive. Jeff
$225/hour? let me guess, jeff, are you a lawyer?
the members of this board - jeff and loren in particular - are extremely helpful with DIY projects, i'd just like to thank them again for all their help and patience in responding to the (sometimes repetitive) questions.
Tool Pants:
I have no doubt, and I have stated this before that you and your crew have spent countless hours building and creating a DVD that is full of wonderful and useful technical tips regarding DIY projects for the Porsche.
My problem is that YOUR DVD (unless there is a description of what projects it contains specifically) DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING THAT I NEED. IF I knew that it told me how to take off my gauge cluster, THEN I would have bought it. IF you tell us where to buy it, THEN maybe people will buy it.
YES I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE INFORMATION AND SUPPORT THAT YOU AND LOREN PROVIDE TO FELLOW PORSCHE OWNERS.
Having said that you have not adequately addressed why you must think that I will break things, or it's your way or the highway method. I have never broken anything yet on my car (knock on wood) because I ask specific questions related to specific projects. I have worked on various other cars in the past. Yes I have broken things in the past, precisely because I failed to ask questions on how things are put together and how they come apart. Also, back then they didn't have message boards with enough members and support to help in DIY projects. My friend owns and operates two shops here in VA. Most likely, I could go to either shop and he could probably figure out how some of this stuff comes out free of charge. I don't bother him with my things because a) I think I could do it myself and b) I enjoy doing them myself. Part of the fun of owning a car is the ability to personalize it and get to know it first hand. I think this is evidenced by the fact that many people on rennlist and other forums perform diy projects (when most of us could easily afford to just get it done). FYI, and this is not an earning contest, it is much cheaper for me to just pay and get it done. The amount that I make is much higher than just paying someone to do the work for me instead of spending my time working on it myself. that is the basic economic principle of opportunity cost.
i don't want to argue with you at any length. luckily i'm a fast typer...
either way, if you want to sell your product, then tell us where to buy it and more importantly TELL US WHAT IS ON YOUR DVD. Nowhere can i find that your DVD contains a gauge cluster installation. the cost of production was high for you and your friends, and if you want to recover that cost, by all means you should advocate the sale. But at least tell us what's on it, where to get it, and why we need it.
I think I see you in my digital camera pictures. Since you were there on that day I kind of remember Ray holding a camera on you and Val.
You might end up in the cutting room floor.
We have shot many hours of digital video tape since then for the maybe next set of DVDs. But I have just now lost interest. Take it to a dealer.
See you on Saturday.
parkman/auclutch I do not live in McLean VA. Home of the C.I.A.
I type with one finger and by the time I am done there are several messages in front of my last view.
I do not want to sell a DVD to you. It does not matter what is on the set of 3 DVDs.
How about a picture of your cluster swap?
The Test.
Tool Pants,
I think the only thing you have done "wrong" here is to attempt to defend or explain yourself.
It's not necessary, and thank you and your buddies (Loren, Henry et al) for all the help, advice etc, including installation of the short shifter.
Hint, For those who want help, a few beers go a long way, a case is even better.
A positive that has come out of this is that I will make an exchangeable contribution to "renntech"
ok i would like to buy the DVD(s) yet still no info. I think that would be awsome to see how something is done befor i attempt to do it on my own..Any direction to purchase it??

hmmm...
Anyways Tool Pants, I'm not interested in your tests but I have installed the gauge cluster and thanks to Raffi and others who helped me installing it in 15 minutes "without breaking anything." I'll upload the diy on saturday when I have time for some html work.
to reiterate - I APPRECIATE YOUR HELP WITH EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE FOR THE FELLOW RENNLISTERS AND RENNTECHERS AND FOR ME! I don't want to argue with you anymore... YOUR INFORMATION POSTED HERE HELPED ME INSTALL MY SHORT SHIFTER, MY LITRONICS, MY TAIL LIGHTS, MY SIDE SKIRTS, MY AERO FRONT, MY DOOR SILLS, MY FABSPEED INTAKE HOSE, MY FABSPEED EXHAUST, THE REMOVAL OF THE ORANGE TINT IN MY HEADLIGHTS, MY STEERING WHEEL, MY GARAGE DOOR BUTTON, AND COUNTLESS OTHER LITTLE MODS. THANK YOU!... BTW: LOREN, YOUR TECH SITE IS LIKE THE BIBLE TO DIY'ERS.
Now, if I could only write a brief, memo, or motion with as much passion as working on my car...
I've been following this exchange the whole day, and I just can't sit aside anymore, eventhough it has nothing do with me.
Parkman you are the cheapest most insecure person (I wanted to use some choise words here but don't want to decend to your level) I 've seen in this board. You get free advice with all those things you had listed (and thus cheap) and now want to complain because Toolpant said you are going to brake something (and thus insecure), get a life.
As I said before, I hope you got it installed. A picture would be nice if you have one.
Colm is in this picture. He is also on the B&M DVD. We worked on his car.
See some of you on Saturday for the drive. Jeff
lol jeeva... do you mean deScend to my level and brEAK something? Learn some spelling and go back to elementary school before you start trying to use complete sentences. i'm sorry it has "nothing (to) do with you." cheap huh? i think i've posted much more advice and diy's here than any of your less than constructive posts. At least i understand what Tool Pants is saying and can understand where he's coming from. He has spent time and effort making his DVD and has probably spent countless hours giving advice to many members on this board, including myself.
peace,
Parkman
lol jeeva... do you mean deScend to my level and brEAK something? Learn some spelling and go back to elementary school before you start trying to use complete sentences.
Man you really need to grow up.
wow parkman, i didn't think my initial attempt to help would eventually turn into this very weird argument. I too have used both rennlist and renntech for help, and have had all my questions answered and learned alot about my car. I hoped that I can be as helpful to you as many others have been to me on this board. I didn't think anybody had ever expected compensation for helping me out, if I am wrong someone tell me, because I may be missing something. If this is the case I will contribute in a few months once I begin my medical residency and start making about $5 an hour. also, i have seen the dvd for sale on ebay previously not sure if it is there anymore.
jeeva, if you too have gained or learned something from rennlist why dont you lead the rest of us regular "users" and start by contributing monetarily to this forum.
Youv'e done yourself no favours parkman.
If anything, you have totally backfired.
Everyone has clearly shown their appreciation and support for Jeff.... including his very welcomed DVD project. So because of your pathetic cheap comment, Jeff is now held in even higher esteem. And so he should be. Hell he may even sell some more DVDs. So if anything, youv'e done him proud. As for you. Well I don't expect you to be made very welcome here for a good while so don't expect any immediate expert help for your 996 on rennlist or renntech.
Of course you could always buy a set of Jeff's DVDs if you get stuck
My appologies to the fellow rennlisters for dragging this thread further into the gutters, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but me getting involved made the situation even worse. Hope my appology is accepted, CHERIO
oh no scouser... no more help? just shoot me already! puhaha... lets see... could I just make a new i.d.?
By the way, I did not mean to discredit Tool Pants in his knowledge and technical expertise. I just don't want to have to buy his dvd that contains nothing that I want to do or have not already done to my car.
also for your information tool pants, you should copyright your dvd because 3 people on this board are trying to sell copies of it for $12 through email. personally, I think that's just wrong... if you want their email addresses just pm me so I don't have to embarass them in public. Or maybe you can just go through your list of whoever has bought them from you and contact them not to copy and sell it. Or... maybe it's just all a scam...
Finally, as Gary NJ noted... "Someone please pull the plug on this thread. What a waste of electrons.."
Hey "Parkman":
Ever heard the saying Rather close your mouth and be thought a fool, than open it and remove all doubt.
I think Jeff has been a gentelman and in a nice way is telling you to go F--K yourself! I wonder why you choose the ******* route, it doesnt help and just makes you look bad.
Ciao,
Steve
In all my years online I've learned no one wins forum battles, it can go on forever.
I'm not taking anyones side here, but can we just stop flaming each other. We own Porsches, we need to be more civilized. Can you imagine a newbie surfing this board and looking at this thread, not the most grown up I must say.
Just my 2cents...
