I am concerned about having a non-Porsche technician, installing anything in my new C4S that requires cutting hole, running wires etc.

Suggestion

Most units only offer limited activation periods as continued use would make it pretty obvious you're doing something to spoof the detector rather than the officer just having difficulty getting a lock on your car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Escort insists on only professional remote radar installation, does anybody know why? from their web site: REQUIRED: Professional Installation The Escort Shifter ZR3 must be professionally installed. Escort will not provide support for your installation. thanks

POST 2Original post

Maybe they don't know how to do it either, so they can't help? Seriosly, buy a V1, far superior to anything from Escort. I have 5 Escorts and V1. The V1 is the best!

POST 3Original post

The install is really complicated. They have to run wires from the front bumber to the cockpit, from the rear bumper to the cockpit, and get everything properly connected. I had my SRX done by a VW dealer that had done dozens of insalls, and it still took him about 9 hours to do it. It took time and cost a lot of money, but was well worth it.

POST 4Original post

ive had both in my front window for 3 weeks and they have about the same range, the only diffrence is the Escort is alot cheaper and doesn't false 1/10 as much

POST 5Original post

The Escort he is talking about is actually installed in the front and rear bumpers and nothing is visible on the windshield. As far as range and sensititvity to radar, it compares to the V1. As to Laser, the Passport SRX "Shifts" laser into the pavement instead of the beam returning to the officer. So, while the V1 beeps to let you know that you've just been "tagged", the SRX jamms the laser, long enough for you to slow down and smile at the officer.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

my dealer does not install the remote detector, they have an outside contractor who does it for them. I am concerned about having a non-Porsche technician, installing anything in my new C4S that requires cutting hole, running wires etc. Am I just being overly cautious, or is this safe to allow?

POST 7Original post

Um, not quite. The "shifting" is basically generation of extra IR laser pulses that will confuse the laser trying to determine your speed. Most units only offer limited activation periods as continued use would make it pretty obvious you're doing something to spoof the detector rather than the officer just having difficulty getting a lock on your car. I'm going to guess that wouldn't amuse the police and may well be illegal in some states.

POST 8Original post

Having owned both Escort and Valentine, I would have to agree with NiveK's assessment. Whenever this topic comes up it's Valentine's Day all over again. The V-1 is excellent but I much prefer the SRX set up. Easier to mute, less false alarms, and far more aesthetically pleasing. Mal28, ask the installer for references. As long as he has done a few Porsches you should be fine.

POST 9Original post

Does it matter whether it "deflects" or "confuses" the cop's laser? The point is it gives you notice and a fighting chance to slow down in time. I have it on my car and it has saved me multiple times. As for the installation, it is complex ands i would not trust it to someone who hasn't done it before. Here's an idea of what's involved: http://www.cartunes.com/installs/porsche/2003_C4S/

POST 10Original post

Uh, no thanks on that install. If the falsing on the V-1 bothers you so much, simply disable the X-band... and cross your fingers through small towns. Pay CASH.

POST 11Original post

I got the 8500 escort @xmas and put it on the window immediately. It's been great. I get a few falsesies now and again. But, all in all, for the price it's saved me at least 6 times so far. And, I have the extra bucks plus time to spend on golf
