Suggestion

If you change springs you should change the shocks to match as well, otherwise you may have undesired underdampning problems besides premature shock wear.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

newbie 996 carrera owner (1999), was CONTEMPLATING "lowering" the automobile using either H&R sport springs or coilovers. 1) any suggestions on how the car would look with the stock wheel setup? it currently has 225/40/18front, 265/35/18rear on 18in turbo look 1 wheels. i will probably move to 285/30/18s in the rear in very short order (perhaps today/tomorrow). does anyone have this setup? 2) are coilovers the way to go or will sport springs do the job? are both (and the idea of lowering) unadvisable? i'm simply trying to enhance the appearance is all. many thanks! will send pics in a moment

POST 2Original post

I wouldn't spend the money on coilovers if you are only looking to improve the appearance of your car. I would go for a matched shock/spring combination. Your stock shock units may not be up to the task when you put on a set of shorter springs. The RoW 030 is a good place to start as it is OEM.

POST 3Original post

If you change springs you should change the shocks to match as well, otherwise you may have undesired underdampning problems besides premature shock wear. Easiest thing to do is what earlyapex says, the factory M030 sport suspension kit (preferably the RoW and not the US version). It lowers 20mm (+/- 10mm) front and 10mm rear (+/- 10mm). And specially it will much improve the handling. But if you want to go even lower, you have the X74 factory kit (30mm all around) though its a stiffer setup than the M030, or the Bilsteins PSS9 which are height adjustable to your desire.

POST 4Original post

ROW 030 is a good choice as is X74 if you want an entire OEM package. Another alternative would be H&R springs with new Bilstein HD/Sport shocks, as your stock shocks are most likely fairly worn by now. It all depends on what you want, I am quite happy with the RoW 030 but many others are happy with their H&R springs too. For aesthetics only, a sport spring change may be what you want. I definitely would stay away from adjustable coil overs if you are not tracking the car.
