Just my 2 cents gents, been checking apples to apples a lot lately.
Leading evidence: 'Check apples' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check apples' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Yeah, most '02 C2's are priced in the upper $40's using Porsche's pre-owned search...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First, thanks for all the great posts, I've been lurking a bit to educate myself. I'm about ready to jump into ownership, and wanted to get an idea of pricing to be sure I'm not about to be ripped off!
I've got a 2003 C2 Coupe, 6 spd, with a few options (Xenon, Bose, PSM, rocker panels). Owner claims it is super clean, it's very low mileage (around 8k). I'm heading up to check it out later this week, but it sounds like what I've been looking for (been poring over ads and walking dealer lots for about 5 weeks now).
Assuming it truly is in perfect condition, what is this car worth?
Thanks in advance!
It is hard to say without a little more info, but "off the cuff" I would say $52k to $57k depending were the car is located (West Coast vs East Coast).
I have an 03 Coupe, and while I would love to believe it's still worth something in the mid 50's, I find that hard to believe.
I paid $58K 2 years ago, and I thought that was top dollar at the time compared to what other sales I saw going on around me.
Turbo's in the 01 and 02 range are coming down around that area now, so I would think 03's are in the mid to low 40's.
There are 14 on autotrader alone with a asking price in the 40's right now -- including targas and cabs. A little negotiating, and they will easily be in the mid 40's.
You will pay more buying from a Porsche dealer, even if buying without CPO, than buying elsewhere. CPO is a nice comfort, but realistically you pay more than just what Porsche charges for the CPO.
The situation is actually much much worse here in Houston where the two dealers are owned by the same company and simply do not compete.
Great input, thanks guys. The asking price is in line with many of the comments provided, so I at least feel good I'm in the correct range.
Hopefully I'll be able to post before/after pics of my ride real soon!
Certainly mid 50's without other details. To me the single biggest part is what is the no kidding condition? Nothing turns me off more than to go see someones 'perfect condition" car and find dings, chips, etc.
The low mileage is another big plus, Auto trader shows 996's well into the mid 50's at that mileage level. Sure, you can find cheaper 911's, just bump up your mileage criteria and throw in some chips. Interior options add up to many thousands too.
Lastly, CPO. It is worth something. Dig through the adds. 2003 911's warranties expire this year (sometime) w/o a CPO. The extended warranty of a CPO until late 2009 means a lot.
Bottom line: big differences in 2003 prices and value. Yes, I am biased. I own a "perfect" condition 11k, '03 with CPO. And it may be for sale soon. Just my 2 cents gents, been checking apples to apples a lot lately.
Well, I own it now. $50k, I found two minor rock chips and otherwise it was perfect. Sitting in my garage with 8090 miles on it. Thanks for all your help in my education and in putting a value on this car.
One picture (stolen from previous owner's ad)...
Looks fantastic! And you even posted pics right away! Is this guy ready for Rennlist or what?!
Enjoy in Good Health!
Justin
Edit: interesting wheels there - are they factory?
Previous owner bought some Carrera Classic 19" wheels (997 wheels) from the dealer. I don't recommend them, the only item that was a negative on the PPI (done by P-dealer) was that the wheels are lightly rubbing the wheel wells in the front. Ie, the wheels are too big.
When I crank through the tread on these tires I'll be offering up the wheels in trade for some 18" wheels. The last owner thought the 19" wheels looked cool, I would rather have the lighter (and not rubbing) 18" wheels. I'm more interested in performance and longevity of car than in posing.
Unfortunately (or fortunately?), the tires only have about 800 miles on them, so it will be a while before I trade them out.
Irk - nice looking car! Congrats and Welcome to Rennlist. Thanks for posting the pics.
As for the front tires rubbing on the fender wells, you could always take a pair ot tin snips and..... nah, never mind!
Seriously, where are the tires rubbing on the fender well? Inside? Outside? Front of fender well? Back part of fender well? Depending on where it is rubbing you might be able to resolve the issue with some 5mm or 7mm spacers.
Nice! Looks super clean! Bet it smells new inside? Beauty is, you can actually drive it a lot, and still have low miles if/when you decide to sell! That is one plus of buying such a low-miles car.
I would look to trade the rims with the new tires - someone out there probably has the same situation with '18's that they want to trade, no?
They are rubbing in the front of the front wheel wells, when the wheel is turned. It's leaving a 4"x4" patch of rub marks almost exactly in the center of the front of the wheel well. Basically, it only happens when you crank the wheel over, during low-speed turning and parking.
The dealer service guy said that this is pretty common, and not a big concern. I am not really worried about the rubbing, as I'm sure I'll burn the rubber off soon enough. It's not hitting hard enough to hear or feel while driving.
Yeah, it is real hard to detect any difference between this car and a new one, it's so clean. The previous owners were meticulous!
On the trade, I'd consider it if someone in San Diego or near wanted to make a trade with new tires in the deal. I guess I just assumed that no one would want to do that deal until it was just the wheels alone. So, if anyone wants to make a trade like that, let me know!
So did they fit the wrong profile or width front tires to get the tire to rub?
Or did they use some funky spacer up front?
Just because they are 19" wheels, doesn't mean they will rub on a 996.
Mine don't - so there is something different with the set-up on your car...
Just an observation for those looking at 19" for their cars.
Maybe they were 997 take-offs: with 997 19" aspect ratios, which would mean taller tires, greater circumference than a 19" with 996 type aspect ratio...........
Yes, the previous owner says he purchased them from the dealer about 1 year ago, and they were wheels from a 997 that the purchaser had upgraded at the dealer. So they are 997 wheels and tires. Unfortunately, the guy then sold the 18" set that he replaced.
My understanding (and I am FAR from expert!) is that the 996 never had a 19" wheel from Porsche. Every Porsche mechanic type I've spoken to has said so, as have several people posting here.
Yeah, I saw that post, but while I go to Toronto occasionally, I can't imagine carrying them onto the plane...
No way I'm dealing with importing and shipping just for a set of wheels! Too bad, because they are the exact wheels I would like to get.
Yes, there was no factory 19" fitment for 996.
The rear 19" tire for the 997 is a 295/30/19.
The rear 18" tire for the 996 is 285/30/18 or 265/35/.18.
So, a 19" tire with a similar circumference to the 285/30/18 would probably need to be shorter than a 295/30/19. Pirelli makes a 305/25/19.
So the tire sizes on my 997 S wheels are:
Front 235/35/19 and Rear 315/25/19
This keeps the over-all size the same - and I have no rubbing what so ever on my 996.
^
Actually, your front diameter is 3/8" (1.54%) larger, rear diameter 1/2" (1.87%) larger than factory fitment.
The 295/30/19 is a full 1-1/4" (4.74%) larger in diameter than 285/30/18.
