The gasket iss less than $10, you might also want to get new micro encapsulated bolts although I just use blue Loc tite.

photo(10).JPG The part with 6 bolts below the alternator with the cooling hose coming out the right side. I can't find it described in any procedure or listed in any part diagram, at least not definitively. Can I remove it without the engine falling apart and just replace the gasket?

Yes. I have had this cover off once or twice when removing the alternator. You are not supposed to have to remove it for the alternator removal but it makes it easier. The gasket iss less than $10, you might also want to get new micro encapsulated bolts although I just use blue Loc tite. You will also lose quite a bit of coolant.
