Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had the IAC out and cleaned it after I did my AOS a few months back.
Leading evidence: 'Clean iac out' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean iac out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

PS no chain slap since I changed the plugs can you believe.

Suggestion
You might research on idle valve issues just to learn if there are any signs of pending failure of this valve or if a periodic cleaning might be called for.

I suppose I could run some test leads to see what kind of signal is going to it and if it varies on startup cold vs.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mornings, or if I leave the car for several hours, the engine starts right up fine, but revs to exactly 2000 rpm then immediately comes back to rest at around 800. Other times when it's warmer, it will rev only to like 1000 or so. It's so consistent I'm thinking it's "by design" but can anyone confirm if this is this normal?
Thanks
The brief rev up then a fall back to less revs is normal.
What is harder to know what is normal is the amount of the rev up. 2K RPMs based on my experience with my cars is high. My recollection is the rev up is more on the order of (maybe) 1500 RPMs with a fall back to a bit over 1K RPMs with the RPMs dropping as the engine idles and gains heat. This is dead cold engine start. A warm or hot engine start the engine still exhibits a rev up but RPMs drop to a near normal idle speed rather quickly.
However, my cars are equipped with e-Gas while your car has a cable driven throttle. The idle control of your engine is different too, using an idle control valve. This may account for the higher rev up, but I can't say for sure, having no time in a older car pre e-Gas.
If in the case of your car the behavior is consistent and there are no other issues/symptoms and idle speed stays in the proper range and is stable I'd say there's nothing to be concerned about.

Don't jinx me !! My battery has a one of those small stickers with 7/06 on it - so I think I'm 'startin' on borrowed battery time.
But in the meantime, yes, it does start and I should be thankful.
I have the same year and model as yours with 68000 miles on the clock. I just went into the garage and started mine from a cold start (it hasn't ran today) and with accelerator off, it went first to 2000 rpm and immediately came back to just short of 900 revs and held steady there. I think that's normal for mine. PS no chain slap since I changed the plugs can you believe.
