I ran a car fax on it and it didn't match what the current owners said in regards to past ownership.
Leading evidence: 'Run car fax' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'maybe not too cheap afterall' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). Suspected cause
The first car was really cheap but there's usually a reason for a low price, so it would have turned out to be maybe not too cheap afterall.

I figure with the CPO warranty, still a low mile car, and very, very clean, I think it was worth it.

I'm going to check out the car but he says it's nearly flawless but the front bumper has been replaced but you cant tell.

The car seemed to run OK, but I did notice that when I'd start the car, when the starter engaged, it made a slight grinding noise that didn't sound right.

Like Andy mentioned, the wheels, well the rears in this case, are a little big, could be the wrong off-set, spacers, or just the tyre, but if you were to lower the car it would definately hit the fender, they look a little out of place with the fronts being the size they are.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm new to p-cars and am looking at a car...here are the details...
2002 PORSCHE 911 (non-turbo, non-C4...I think it's a C2?)
18,630 m
6 speed
Interior gray
Exterior metalic blue
He's asking 40K
I'm going to check out the car but he says it's nearly flawless but the front bumper has been replaced but you cant tell.
He says that a previous buyer did a pre-inspection report and he still has it. He said the previous buyer bailed on the deal because he couldn't afford it.
This car would be my daily driver.
Thanks!
What options does the car have?
The price of 40K is under private party blue book (good condition). Sounds a little low.
Why was the front bumper replaced? Was the car in an accident? If so, what else was damaged?
To get a ball park figure for the year and model, look up
www.kbb.com
. Use private party "Good" for a typical value. Then look up the wholesale value. A normal condition car will sell for around private party good value if everything is ok. Almost no car is worth private party "excellent" even though many sellers think they are. And no car is ever worth what a dealer is asking.

We checked out the car and here is what we found
The ppi report said front bumper and alternator are aftermarket.
The paint on thr bumper had some cracks.
Some minor door dings.
Drivers front headlight didn't work
Drivers rear taillight didn't work
Missing drivers front markMissing seat adjuster ****...the switch worked but is missing the cover
Paint showed a lot of swirl marks.
Interior was dirty but could clean up nicely
One rim had a large dent in it.
Overall the car is OK but not nearly as nice as I would think a 18K mile car should be.
They were willing to take 37k
Sounds like a bit of a roach from your description(?) They sold and leased a zillion of these cars, there are creampuffs galore and it's a buyer's market for any luxury/sports/non-essential car right now, particularly cars that are just out of factory warranty and known for expensive repairs.
Keep looking. If you have 40 large ready, you are holding all the cards. Good luck!
I don't see anything serious here. The dent in the rim is annoying, but can be negotiated away. Okay, so you have to change a few bulbs and do a detailing job to get rid of a few swirl marks. A seat adjuster **** will cost you $4.
Photos would be nice, but nothing in the description is alarming. Not a "roach", that's just silly. This seems like a reasonable price.
So I ended up passing on the car I described earlier, because I found the following at a Porsche dealer;
2002 Coupe
6 Speed
Lapis (sp?) blue
Blue interior (I dont know what the exact color is called)
22K Miles
Porsche Warranty for 2 more years or 50K miles
Totally clean exterior and interior...miles above the previous car
It currently has some 19" two piece "Zone" wheels, chromed, and too much "bling" for me. They are swapping them for some 18" Porsche wheels.
Got the car for 47K even.
I figure with the CPO warranty, still a low mile car, and very, very clean, I think it was worth it.
I'll post pics of the car tomorrow...it's dark now.
As I cant post a link yet, you can find MMMMYYYYYYY new car at the Newport Beach Porsche Dealer site. Inventory ID is 291196. The only 2002 they have.
Nice Grabbbbbb....wow, you certainly worked the dealer on their original price!! It was very over priced to begin with and you sound like you scored a nice deal. WELCOMEEEEEEEEEEE

Good job vrinner!
The first car was really cheap but there's usually a reason for a low price, so it would have turned out to be maybe not too cheap afterall. I think the price for the car you got is OK as it seams to be a very nice ride! Have fun with your new toy!
Wow - advertised at $59K and you got it for $47. That's saying something. Couple thing I think.
FWIW - I paid $35K for a 2002 last April with 40K miles, and it was in really nice shape - still is. I am still buzzing from the smoking deal I got though. I don't see or hear anyone else doing as well. Love everything about that car. No surprises yet, and it's got CPO till May '08.
Something didn't feel right about the first car you described. Sounds like you felt the same way. Congrats on the Lapis Bue car. Very pretty. If you're anything like me you're going to love it.
Great pickup! My first post...very interested in this thread as I have been looking for my first p-car and had my eye on the first one you looked at. I live near the dealer you picked your pre-owned at....if I would have known it could have been had for that I might have picked it up! I love the blue.....you did very well.
My 2004 C2 is for sale. Lapis Blue 41,8xx miles. Asking $52,000, price negotiable. Here is a link to the particulars about the car.

PM me if you are interested.
For what it's worth, I'd suggest, if possible, you lower your price to $49, 999. Having a lower first number in the price is a ploy that almost every retailer employs, so it must have some merit.
Good luck.
Yeah, I have been considering that exact thought. However, since
vrinner
just paid $47 for an '02 (yes it is CPO and has 22k miles) I have a hard time understanding why a car two years newer would only be worth an additional $3k.
OK...so now it's been a night since I made the plunge...I look out into my driveway and I am still stoked...no regrets!
In regards to the 02 vs 04 pricing, I'd say it's almost a wash as my car has half the miles as gota911's car does plus the CPO till July 2009.
The car I was looking at before I found on Yahoo auto. The car number is 220293776 I still cant post a link so you'll have to search for it.
bk12 - I'd say you should go look at the car and make a decision. For me, I just didn't have the right feeling about the car. A car with only 18K miles on it that looked like it had 75K miles just didn't seem right. I ran a car fax on it and it didn't match what the current owners said in regards to past ownership. The car was originally purchased as a lease, 9 months later sold to the current owners friend, then transfered to the current owners ex. She has been driving the car off and on for the past couple of years.
The car seemed to run OK, but I did notice that when I'd start the car, when the starter engaged, it made a slight grinding noise that didn't sound right. I started the car several times and it was pretty consistant. I did the same thing on the car from the dealer and it didn't sound like that. Not knowing Porsche's too well, I dont know if thats normal or not.
The seller is moving and wants to get rid of the car. We actually offered her 36K but she held firm on 37K and wouldn't budge as she said a car dealer offered her 37K. I think that anyone who knows more about these cars can make a better judgment on weather or not this car is a good deal. I just didn't feel it was good for me. I really wanted my first Porsche experience to be a good one and was willing to pay more to get it. I'll post some pics later today!
Here are some pics of the car.
There's an autox next weekend here in SoCal, I know what we'll be doing next weekend! Anyone know what SCCA Solo2 class this car would run in?
No way it is a wash. Not with 2 years differential in the cars.
KBB shows the Retail Price of $46,140 for a 2002 in excellent condition with 22,500 miles (typical mileage is 69,000) For a 2004 with 42,000 miles (typical mileage is 51,000) in excellent condition, KBB lists the Retail Price of $56,740. CPO is worth, at the most, between $2,000 and $2,500.
You paid a little less than would be expected for you car. Good job and nice looking P-car!
Thanks for the update. I will be new to p-cars too, and feel the same way you did after hearing your description. They talk about buying from the right owner....someone who doesn't bother fixing a tail or headlight, or other small things, not to mention offering an inaccurate description of the cars history doesn't sound too good. I was going to dial the number yesterday to talk with the owner a bit, but decided against it as I am hoping to hold out until the end of august...at least that is the plan, if I find the right car at the right price now it will be sooner. I saw your post asking about the car and knew which one you were talking about....glad that you were thoughtful enough to post what you found-it helped me a ton. The search continues.....
Yeah Tim, everyone always says the model year of the car makes all the difference when it comes to price. As in, the newer the car, the more it's worth!
That said, in 2 months the '08's will be out, which makes all of our cars a year older! I don't care, since I'm not selling! But you get the idea - shows how BAD of an investment cars are, unless you hold them for 25 years in a bubble!
Nice ride and welcome. Like Andy mentioned, the wheels, well the rears in this case, are a little big, could be the wrong off-set, spacers, or just the tyre, but if you were to lower the car it would definately hit the fender, they look a little out of place with the fronts being the size they are. But other than that, which can be corrected, a great deal and nice ride...enjoy
I thought they were going to install the original Porsche wheels. That said I noticed earlier that the car came with 17" wheels so I think you're better off with the bling.
Nice car, beatiful colour.
Thanks for all the comments on the car.
As for the wheels, my wife is taking the car in on Monday to get a set of 18" wheels from the C4 car in this pic put on the car.
Where was this at? Looks like a fun drive, still worried about those tyres rubbing, but you are taking care of that.
I drove on 152 from Gilroy to Watsonville yesterday and it was a blast although I was not familiar with the road so I took easy. But I had my headlights on and everyone in front of me, once I caught up to them, moved out my way.
This was at Turnbull Canyon in Whittier/Hacienda Heights. Nice drive on the backside. The Hacienda Heights side is a little narrow and crowded with houses.
Both of you guys have great cars...Tim's is a little out of my price range (a good deal on an mid-low mile '02 is as probably as much as I am looking to spend). Gary, yours looks great. If it was within a few hours drive of SoCal, I probably would have come out to take a look at it.
vrinner...your new one looks great...very nice pickup.
