I took wheels off, cleaned the cosmoline from the inside and waxed it.

It seems better than the P21S, which I've used for years.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have the 18" sport design wheels and they are hard to keep clean. I am having trouble getting the dirt off lately. It almost soaks in and is difficult to get off. I am thinkning I need to clean them really well and them apply a poish for wheels.
Any suggestions??
Meguiar's has a wheel cleaner out now that seems to be very effective and, in theory, safe. It seems better than the P21S, which I've used for years. They also have a nice tire shine that's spray-on.

I agree with Juan.
I just take the wheels off and clean them. That way you can clean brake calipers nicely as well.
The first time you do it be sure to wax the wheels before reinstalling them as it makes the "maintenance washings" easier.
i have the high polish turbo-look wheels on my C4. they're super easy to keep clean. the "high polish" refers to a chrome paint that porsche puts on the wheels which looks exactly like chrome metal, but is just a really hard, shiny paint. i can simply take a dry cloth and wipe the brake dust off of them!!!
Today I washed them really well 3 times with wheel cleaner. Then I used Mothers wheel cleaner (that was all they had the the auto parts store nearby) and it cleaned and polished the wheels. Hopefully this will keep the dirt from getting embedded in the metal. I might have to try something better if I still have problems. Thanks.
I took wheels off, cleaned the cosmoline from the inside and waxed it. Now I just use P21S with a rag rapped around my hand like a mitt. Have sport design wheels and can keep them really clean that way. Can't beat it!
I use a very weak solution non-bio washing powder (less than 5%) and rinse well with rinse-aid in the final wash down, then leather off. I have found that the acid based wheel cleaners affect the protective coating on the wheel bolts and encourages corrosion. At about $100 (the sterling equivalent) for a set of replacement bolts it was an expensive lesson. The washing powder solution also cuts thru' traffic grime very well - just make sure its fully disolved otherwise it is the equivalent of fine cutting paste (OK for valve seats but not the bonnet/hood?).
Amen on waxing!!! At a PCA detailing clinic it was highly recommended!
Almost any wax makes a difference in ease of cleaning, so use up your old wax on the wheels. Then you can wipe off the grime and dust with a damp rag!!
In general, I'll just clean the wheels with wash shampoo. When they are very dirty AND I have time to spray wax them, I'll use P21S wheel cleaner.
The rewaxing is important...any wheel cleaner will remove the previous wax.
Heat from the brakes will also cause the wax to break down quicker than it normaly would on the cars body. I like to use a synthetic polish like Klasse All In One for protection and additional heat resistance. Zaino works great too.
If you use a wheel cleaner or anything more aggresive than auto body shampoo you will need to reaply the wax treatment.
