A new top from a reputable vendor, professionally installed by an experienced upholstery shop is the recommended way to go IMO.

I had a new top installed yesterday in Houston TX.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I thought I'd share some pics. I had a new top installed yesterday in Houston TX. I opted to go with the plastic window - the last one lasted ~10+ years and the glass was an additional $800 which I couldn't justify.
Frank - I got a GAHH top. Glad I took it to an installer. I was missing one clip and the other was broken - definitely a professional task.
Color matches up well with the rollbar. Installer recommended that I keep the top up for 2 weeks, which I plan on doing.
Did you consider getting a top from Ebay? there is lots in the $350-450 range about half the price of the "German" not sure paying double justifies the distinction. They all have 100% feedback with 1000's of comments so there are people buying these tops and installing without problems, unless someone heard otherwise?
I put a GHH top with glass on my 2001 Cab. A new top from a reputable vendor, professionally installed by an experienced upholstery shop is the recommended way to go IMO. When I researched a replacement top, GHH came up as the number one choice on RL and what was recommended by my dealer. I've seen what is involved in properly replacing the top and head liner (don't forget that). It's not a DIY job.
To the original poster. Your top looks awesome! Nice double stitching.
Many consider rebuilding and engine as not a DIY job either but there is a number of amatures that can do it. I can't see replacing a convertible top harder than tearing into an engine. As soon as someone is willing to share the top replacement procedure details, it will become a DIY option.
Yes. I'm one of those many people that considers rebuilding the M96 engine as not a DIY job. Same as replacing the top on a 996. There are some repair items best left to a reputable shop to handle but I know many factors like affordability, curiosity, resale value, etc. etc. would incline one to take on doing difficult jobs.
I came to the same conclusion a few years ago especially since I didn't have a garage at the time. I assume this new top will will outlast the engine this time around.
I just purchased a Sierra brand top online at the recommendation of an installer in my area. It is due to be installed by them in about two weeks. GAHH was his other recommended brand and I purchased Sierra only because it cost less. I will post my impressions after the install.
Good point. I did not take any photos of it recently. Most of the shots I have are with the top down. Really, the canvas was in pretty good shape. I could have had the window replaced for ~$650, but elected to go the new top route instead, as I figured it was only a matter of time before a rip developed in the 13 yo material.
Last photos shown below, from July2013...
I finally got the Sierra top installed on my C4. Installer took two days.
Re-used the black liner. Replaced the "moleskin" material that is used on the bows of the convertible frame.
The installer noted that the Sierra brand was very good to work with and it fit very well. Based on this, I would recommend the Sierra brand as a good option in addition to the GAHH that others have noted.
I can finally see out thru the back window again.
