Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just backed out my 2002 996 and found oil on the floor for the first time. The pix is attached. Is this the main rear seal? Should I drive it to the shop, just 5 miles away? If it is the main RMS seal, I know that I will be adding the LN bearing upgrade. ANy thoughts?

POST 2Original post

I'm having a hard time telling for sure from the photo where on the engine we're looking, but I'm assuming that its right up against the transmission housing. Regardless, it's not possible to differentiate an RMS oil leak from one coming from the IMS without dropping the transmission. So long as there has not been a large amount of oil leaking, and the engine is not making any strange noises, you should be able to drive to the dealer. But definitely have it checked ASAP.

POST 3Original post

if the leak is where the tranny and engine meets.... yup, IMS or RMS. or both.

There is one more issue to throw into the mix- it could be you AOS bellows. I have seen them leak like this...the oil runs down and collects at the lowest point. It is very difficult to see without more pics, however.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
