Suggestion

I wouldn't think you would to need to replace your cam wear pads before ~80k' AOS either although that can go earlier.

Suggestion

It's not a question of dual or single row, it's a question of single row serviceable (can be extracted without spliting the engine case) and single row not serviceable (can't replace without splitting the engine case).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a factory replacement engine built in November 2005 and I'm curious to learn which IMS bearing I have. If it is servicable, I'll do the LNE IMS as my factory warranty is up this month. Question is: I know I'll have to drop the tranny, I will HAVE to remove the flywheel to see which IMS bearing I have? Also, I see lots of guys replace the AOS and cam wear pads at this time, my engine has ~20,000 on the clock. At what mileage are these items suggested?

POST 2Original post

yup, definitly have to remove flywheel to verify dual vs single row IMS bearing

POST 3Original post

Maybe not looks like he should be able to see enough to identify it?? I wouldn't think you would to need to replace your cam wear pads before ~80k' AOS either although that can go earlier. DIY removal info http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/996rms/rms1.php

POST 4Original post

Would a factory replacement engine made in November 2005 (as per OP's post) still have the easily removable IMS bearing or had Porsche already gone over to the larger flanged bearing which requires the cases to be split to remove ??

I believe early in 2006 is when Porsche made the switch as there are 2005 model year 997 porsches that have the serviceable IMS bearing. It's not a question of dual or single row, it's a question of single row serviceable (can be extracted without spliting the engine case) and single row not serviceable (can't replace without splitting the engine case).

POST 6Original post

With the 05 cars its really a toss up as to what bearing they may have, a visual inspection is the only real way to go.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats what I figured, BUT is do I HAVE TO remove the flywheel to properly identify the type of bearing? I'd prefer to just crack the tranny and engine apart and peek in there. **Wow Im not even going to edit my original penmanship. "but is do I..." you might be questioning my ability to drive a car after that one.
