After reading many posts, it doesn't seem to be any advantage of changing intake filters other than more noise!

thanks a bunch for the info..The only problem now is you've only further fed my curiosity and now i want to try running catless to find out for myself

I've dynoed my car many times during it's development but never specifically to test the filter but I assume that the GA Cup guys have.

Hey Jim, i can understand using a cone filter for racing because i mean..those cars are alwayse going fast..but in traffic or at city speeds you're going to be sucking in a lot of hot air from the engine bay, do you know of someone makes a heatsheild ?

I used a plumbers plut with an expandable compression fitting from the inside of the airbox to seal the silencer hole/tube as the MAF is downstream and if I left it open it would scew up the readings etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have that intake you mentioned and I really like it. I think it was $$ well spent. The only thing is there is quite a bit of intake noise once it is installed. Be prepared for it. I did it first and then the Fabspeed headers and mufflers later on. Once the exhaust was done I didn't notice the intake noise quite so much as there is quite a bit more noise from the exhaust. Luckily that is what I wanted.
I had one of those on my C4. Here's the short of it:
MUCH better sound
Power gains? Depends who you ask, but basically, don't expect any.
Power losses? You'll definitely lose a couple of HP in city driving since it sucks in hot engine compartment air.
I had mine on for 20K miles and was really happy with it. Just a word of caution: The MAF is really sensitive in these cars, so if you get one of these intakes, be very careful with the MAF when installing it!
I agree with Teflon.
You can expect it to sound better but I doubt that those aftermarket intakes can outdo the OEM Porshce ones in the performance area.
FWIW, this weekend there were four C class club racing 996s and probably 10 Grand Am Cup 996s at VIR. I didn't see the engine compartment in all of them but I was able to check out most and didn't see a single one that had the stock air box. All were using some type of cone filter. I've dynoed my car many times during it's development but never specifically to test the filter but I assume that the GA Cup guys have. There's a reason they/we all use them.
Having said that, I doubt that you will see a noticeable difference on the street.
Jim
I have the intake and only had a problem when I re-oiled my filter. Had to get a new MAF.
It sounds good; you hear a giant sucking sound with the top down; I also have a different exhaust; I think it is the GHL; both came on the car.
If you buy it don't try to re-oil your filter; just throw it away and buy another filter once it gets real dirty. The filters they sell have had all the excess oil taken off them; buy the replacement filters from EVMS as the BMC and K and N's don't fit.
You also need to drive for a few weeks before the engine remaps itself; don't expect instant changes (if there is any actually at all); initially your power may actually decrease.
Philip.
my bmc fits fine I don't know what you're talking about. Just for the hell of it I did my own "mods to the airbox and my thoughts,
I changed to the bmc- more sucking sound at idle no real difference in power enough to feel at least
I took out the silencer in the airbox as well as the larger grate in front of the MAF but left the smaller one
I used a plumbers plut with an expandable compression fitting from the inside of the airbox to seal the silencer hole/tube as the MAF is downstream and if I left it open it would scew up the readings etc.
The result was a greater intake sound, maybe a little bit better throttle response dunno.
I was rather timid about leaving it in however as there is a nut that I niglected to loc-tite and didn't want it entering the enigine!
I have not set it back to stock
I don't really notice a difference
One thing I did notice is that with the setup before it would suck in a lot of crap from the hole in the bottom of the airbox and make the bmc dirty as hell in no time. I also had a rms problemo so dunno if the dirtiness was contributory etc.
because of the dirtiness and the nut swollowing possiblity I put it back to stock
I would say that during cold nights it might have given a feeling in the pants but during the day it was negligible
The gains are going to be more in the top end - when maximum air is rushing through the system. Compared to bone stock, my car has slight - very slight - gains in the bottom end overall. But in the mid-range it comes alive and you feel the rush into the top end where the gains are noticeably realized. It is MUCH better than stock in the upper RPM ranges.
I have very mild driving roads to and from town and enjoy a few bursts of fun on roads where I have little chance of getting a ticket. It is all in the name of fun, which is exactly what I wanted. I can't wait for them to complete our new track - tick-tock tick-tock...
Hey Jim, i can understand using a cone filter for racing because i mean..those cars are alwayse going fast..but in traffic or at city speeds you're going to be sucking in a lot of hot air from the engine bay, do you know of someone makes a heatsheild ? other possible solutions?
DE, That's a really good point. Several of the Grand Am cars had a shield between the engine and the air-cleaner area. When you looked at the engine bay all you saw was a cone filter and the oil fill tube sticking out of a metal heat shield. That, along with no cats, creates a cooler area around filter. We're toying with the idea of testing one after we figure out if it would be legal for club racing. The other concern is that it holds heat in around the engine which isn't good either.
Jim
i'm surprised budget drag racers (read: ricers) havn't tried something like a co2 or cold compressed air purge into/infront of the intake so it sucks in a burst of cold air... it would be like turbo's y0!
lol..just kidding.
just out of curiosity, how much torque do those cars put out? i'd imagine they'd have quite a bit more horspower than torque because they have practically no backpressure, correct me if i'm wrong.
I know people are talking about intakes, but what about just an air filter like K&N?? Does anyone do this? Any performance or gas mileage difference?? Thanks
DE,
I don't know much about it but I know that drag racers will shoot a little NOS into the intake to cool it down before a run.
As for torque, my 996 (3.6L X51, no cats, no mufflers) has great torque over 5500 rpms but none under 5000. Great on the track, not so good for a street car.
Jim
I had the fabspeed airkit on my car for the de season around here. Sounded awsome, car did pull a little better on the track at wot. I took it off when I brought my car in for servicing, now I miss it, the car is definitely not as responsive, nor does it pull as hard at wot, can't wait to put it back on!
DE,
I've dynoed my car many times but remember, it's a 3.6L X51, not a 3.4. I can tell you that straight pipes added about 13 hp and similar torque over having cats and no mufflers. The downside is that all the power is between 5500 and the rev limiter.
Jim
According to Porsche's graphs, it appears that the 3.6L hits max torque around 4300. The stock X51 has a similar max that it hits around 4800. With cats but no mufflers, my max torque is reached at 4800. Without cats, my max is at 5400. The cross over (no cats passing cats) is at 5100. Without cats torque is significantly better (22-35 lbs) up to about 6200 rpms (where the cams shift?) then holds a 5-10 lbs advantage the rest of the way.
At 4000 rpms a stock 3.6 seems to have about 98% of its max torque. A stock X51 has considerably less but I don't have real numbers. My X51 with cats but no mufflers has 88%. Without cats it's closer to 78%. Pretty dramatic. You don't want to get stuck under 5000 rpms in my car. On the other hand, above that she screams.
I hope this helps.
Jim
^ perfect. thanks a bunch for the info..The only problem now is you've only further fed my curiosity and now i want to try running catless to find out for myself
.
once again thanks for your time.
I have the EVO intake along with the Fabspeed exhaust and headers... I recommend the intake espeically combined with the exhaust and headers... great sound!
Is it just me or does the Evo "Quickflow air intake system" look exactly like the fabspeed " cold air intake system"?
And then Evo has a "fresh" air intake that's a cone setup.
So is the Fabspeed really NOT a "fresh/cold" intake system or is it all just marketing
evoms uses fabspeed parts marketed as their own i believe...
because the fabspeed/fvd/evoms headers..for example...seem 2 be pretty much the same..
someone please correct me if i'm wrong...and i might verywell be.
Unfortunately, the road we live on is dirt, so I'm keeping my intake stock. After reading many posts, it doesn't seem to be any advantage of changing intake filters other than more noise!
