It was very dirty, almost black all around the TB inside including the butterfly, don't think it was cleaned before after 7 yrs.
Leading evidence: 'Clean before' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
If you still have a roughish idle after cleaning the TB, then check your oil level.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

However, once, the plate is open, that little bit og smudge makes no difference at all.
WOO-HOO!!!
For weeks my car's idle has been poor. Rough, stumbles, rumbles around. It was annoying the crap out of me. So today I pulled the throttle body and cleaned it till it glowed. Got all the carbon crap out of every little corner. Put it all back together and MAN...what a difference! Runs like a sewing machine now.
Awesome...HIGHLY recommended!

Glad to hear it Chad. I did mine recently also - made a very noticible difference. After I finished the P-car, I did my DD (99 Explorer w/ 93k miles) - feels 100x better.
Here is some good info on the topic.

Always a great idea to keep the TB clean! Read the DIY, which is very informative in terms of taking off the airbox, but I hate those spray carb cleaners. (Loved em on old american iron, but not on German so much)
No one is afraid that will eat through whatever micron thin german wunder coating porsche is bound to have put on the TB? Or is it bare metal on our cars?
C. I did same job a couple months ago, TB, MAF, ICV (mines a 99), they were pretty much clean, but the ICV was the dirtest of the bunch. Made my occasional rough idle better but not gone. My next move is to replace fuel filter. Then new ICV, as mine looked cockeyed. I posted pics here, but the few responses said it looked ok. Indie thought that a mildly screwed up ICV would force computer to try to compensate, thus the hunting idle.
Fairly simple really.
1. Unclip the MAF
2. Remove the entire air box assembly (1 bolt)
3. Unclip all the electrical connections to the TB (throttle body)
4. If you have a throttle cable disconnect it.
5. Remove all the 10mm bolts (4) and the 1 10mm nut..
6. Disconnect the vacuum line.
7. Thoroughly clean the TB with TB cleaner or similar.
8. Reassemble. (be sure to use some green or blue thread lock on the bolts)
Done. Took me 35 min tops...

dfc,
i don't have any idle symptoms like some have mentioned here, but at my next oil change, i'll have my indy shop git 'er done.
i took a look at your linked diy.... that little bit of black dust causes all this? wow.
what about the icv, maf cleaning? any diy pics for that?
thx, chad.
No pics. Didn't touch the MAF. But there was a bunch of carbon / black grimy crap inside the TB and on the b-fly valve. I simply took a little trip to the local auto store and bought some TB cleaner. Remove it, sprayed the BE-JEEBUS out of it and wiped it down with a shop towel till it was spotless. I also sprayed the electrical components with electrical parts cleaner. Worked great.
Took no time at all.
And...I hate to say it...but if a little dirty surface area like inside the TB can make this car run as rough as it did, I can completely see how the smoother air flow inside the revised plenum could make it that much better...interesting....hmmmmmm...
C.
so what's been the overall feedback on the plenum taking out 80% of the typical 10hp post-mod justification fluff... i'm interested in this esp based on your take here chad about airflow...
Me too. I am utterly shocked at the results of cleaning...literally a "smudge" of black, carbon / dirt yuck out of the TB. To have the results I had simply floored me. I am a bit fascinated to find out how closely these motors are tuned. After looking first hand at the "dead-end" of the T-junction, I can only imagine what the result might be. It's beginning to add up...
I am VERY curious about playing around with the RSS plenum. Christ...removing dirt from a smooth surface made it run better...
Hmmmmmmm....interesting.

i'll lean on your mod tenacity and keep an eye out for future threads, chad. i think you seem to have a pretty level head about this stuff (i.e. i trust your judgement).
Ben, even w/o the idle symptoms, you'll probably notice a slightly "crisper" throttle response. As Chad said, about 35 minutes or so, cleaning the MAF only takes an extra 5 min. Unplug it (can be a pita, there is a clip on the backside of the plug which is hard to see), remove two torx security screws (torx with a dimple in the center), pull the MAF and spray with electronic/MAF cleaner. Install is the reverse.
The MAF is a quick and easy job. If I recall it's a #20 security torx to take it off.
As far as the TB clean, may not be necessary to take off the air filter box. I did mine by unclamping the intake tube and moving it underneath the TB.
The TB has small air bypass ports near the butterfly valve. That's what get's blocked by the carbon build up. It wouldn't take much to block them.
Did mine few months ago even though my iddle was OK at the time too... It was very dirty, almost black all around the TB inside including the butterfly, don't think it was cleaned before after 7 yrs. Only difference with Chad's DIY is that I did not remove the whole intake, just that rubber tube connecting TB to the intake box. Actually I have the Schnell CAI so it was very easy to remove. Clean it all up and as expected the engine runs really smooth. Cheers.
I cleaned my TB this weekend. It was dirty, at least the microfiber cloth that I used was pretty black afterwards. However, I do not notice a difference in idle quality since cleaning the TB. Although, my car idled smoothly before the cleaning.
I did the TB and MAF cleaning also. Besides the fact that the car is smoother at idle now, I popped my Porsche mechanical-work cherry. I was intimidated by doing work on this car, but now I absolutely love it! Yeah it's a tiny "hood" that's all backwards, but reaching in and doing stuff really wasn't hard. And in the end it's just an engine, and not magical gnomes turning the axle. Thanks all for the guidance!!!
$hit dude, you didn't see the magical gnomes? Check in the corners of your garage, if there is a fridge in your garage check there too. If you don't wrangle them up and put them back you'll get a gnm code in ten miles. Didn't you read step two?
Just remember that the improvement was for the idle. my 02, reqacted the same whay after I did a remove & clean, and it just wasn't that dirty. However, once, the plate is open, that little bit og smudge makes no difference at all. If you still have a roughish idle after cleaning the TB, then check your oil level. I found a smoother idles when I reduced the level from FULL (last mark onthe sensor) to 2 marks below FULL.
did mine last night. smoother idle. also, i think it dropped about 50 rpm after it warmed up.
started the car this morning and instead of the usual 1200 rpm then drop to 800 rpm after warm up, it started at 1000 and went to a little below the 800 rpm has mark, just like last night.
so my startup idle and warm up idle dropped.
my TB was also very dirty along the edges and at the hinge of the valve. i forgot to take pictures until after i cleaned it.
