You can run 11 inch wheels but you would need a NB offset, such as GT3 wheels with a 60 or 65 offset.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone, First an introduction, then an admission, followed by a plea for advice. I have been lurking for a while, but this is the first thread I have started. I own a 2001 Polar Sliver Carrera 4 with Graphite Grey interior and a Tiptronic transmission. No real mods, other than starting to replace worn plastic bits with carbon fiber. I do have a carbon and leather steering wheel on the way from FVD with paddle shifters. For no good reason other than P-car obsession, I started sifting through all of the different mods I could do. I looked at the plenum and exhaust systems and ECU flashes etc. For one reason or another I chose not to do any of the foregoing. Usually either a desire to keep the car basically original looking or fear of voiding my after-market warranty. I finally settled on new wheels. There is nothing wrong with the 18” turbo look wheels on the car, but I figured I could get a little more – more what I don’t really know – from getting lighter wheels. The OEM Turbo Hollow Spoke wheels seemed like the perfect solution – reduce unsprung mass and keep the same original look. I spotted on eBay a set off off a 2004 Turbo that look pretty much new and have no curb rash or other blemishes. The price was about half of some I have seen recently. I was out for a walk last night with my wife when I got an update on my cell phone that the auction was ending soon and made a bid from my phone. It wasn’t until after I made the bid that I realized that I never made sure the wheels would fit. Well, when I got home I tracked down TSB 4440 from 6/04 and it doesn't look like the rears will fit without body work on the fenders. I am not all that keen on doing work on the fenders just to accommodate these wheels. They are: Front 8J x 18 x ET 50 (996.362.136.04) Rears 11J x 18 x ET45 (996.362.142.11) I read the Noby thread and am not looking to make a huge deal out of this. I do still have a couple of questions/options, though: 1. Is anybody successfully running 11 inch rear hollow spokes on a non-S 996? If the rear offset is supposed to be 65 and the Porsche spacers referred to in the TSB are 17mm (which adds up to only 63mm), is the 2 mm gap a big issue? Will the tires rub if I try to use them? 2. If the answer is the rears won’t work, can I mix hollow spokes on the front and solid spokes on the rear? 3. Finally, should I just admit my mistake, never bid from my cellphone again, take my lumps and sell or trade the wheels? Thanks in advance for you thoughts. Scott P.S. a quick photo of my car in the lovely Seattle rain . . .

POST 2Original post

Well, I know you can fit 11" wheels on the rear of an '02+, as my '03 C2 had 19"x11" on it when I bought it. But the fenders had been rolled, and there was a very minor amount of rubbing (on the inside) with spirited driving. I have not tried 18"x11" wheels, but I suspect it could work on my year, especially if you stuck with 295 tires. I do not know if there is/was a difference that is relevant for '01. I do have one piece of advice for sure, tho... Change out the side markers on your car, that orange has GOT to go!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply. Most of the notes in the TSB say things like "only up to and including MY01" so I suspect there was a slight change in the fenders for '02. I cannot really see your side markers in your avatar. What did you switch the orange to?

POST 4Original post

Clear side markers. Here's the same picture with more resolution so you can see them better. This is a very common mod, and takes about 5 minutes to swap them out.

POST 5Original post

The offset on the rears of the TT wheels won't fit a narrow body, no matter what. You can run 11 inch wheels but you would need a NB offset, such as GT3 wheels with a 60 or 65 offset. You need to sell the hollow spoke to someone with a wide body 993 or 996. Hopefully you didnt pay too much. In any event they shouldnt be hard to sell, but you won't be able to get a lot for them. I made the same mistake about 4 years ago when I first bought my 2000 996. I've since educated myself on wheel offsets. I still have the two rears, as they were painted midnight blue and impossible to sell.
