This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is there a difference in engine problems (eg. RMS leaks etc.) between the 2 transmission types? If so, what are they and do they depend on the MY?

POST 2Original post

If you're looking to buy a 996, I would base my decision on whether you want a 6 speed or a TIP and not on wheather there may be more problems with one over the other. If you prefer a 6 speed, you may never be happy picking a TIP that has less perfromance. If you want a TIP, you may learn to hate shifting constantly in traffic if you get the 6 speed. It is true that a some manuals have had RMS problems, but in the vast majority of cases, once it was repaired, the probelm never arose again. You will always find some who have major probelms in any type of car. One guy in this forum says that his engine caught on fire several times and he has had a half a dozen new engines (or something like that). You will also find others, like myself, who have had no major problems with their cars. As a matter of fact, the build date of my car should have dictated that my car would have exploded by now if you listen to some people. Look for a car you like, drive it, inspect it, check it's history and if it feels good...buy it. Remember that the majority of posts in these forums are from people with problems with their cars, so to read these posts and form some sort of opinion from them is skewed towards the negative.

POST 3Original post

Are tips less likely to have RMS leaks? I already have a Tip, but bought it because i use it as my daily driver in Atlanta....heckuv bad place for a manual in rush hour. I have actually learned to really love the tip and prefer it to the 5 speed in the wife's boxster.hh

POST 4Original post

One may prefer a manual for the extra involvement... but from a performance perspective, it seems that the current Tip-S provides, in practice, higher performance (straightline 0-60 numbers notwithstanding).

POST 6Original post

How do guys or girls fare in timed events generally in Tips compared to 6 speeds? There was a lady in a Tip Cab in Smoky Mtn region in the 90s that used to smoke everyone, including her husband. I can't recall exactly what she had, but I believe it was a 964 with the older 4 speed Tip. I've since moved to GA and haven't kept u

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Although I appreciate 1999Porsche911's advice, i already own a 1999 Tip and I was merely wondering if a Tip had a better record with RMS leaks than a Manual transmission. If anyone else could answer my original thread questions, I would be appreciative.

POST 8Original post

I doubt that the RMS failure stats are any different for the tip. It just happens that there are fewer tips out there. I know of a few tips who developped the RMS failure.
