Suggestion
If the weather gets extreamly bad then I will either work from home or take the bus but most of the time I plan to use the car (or the motorcycle on some of the clearer days)

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
I am new to these boards and do not own a Porsche, but was curious as of how many of you drive your cars through the salty and snowy winter months? I live in Michigan and as some of you know, the winters can get pretty nasty. I have seen a few 911's at a few Porsche dealers during winter with snow tires and I think that is pretty cool to see these vehicles driven all year long here in Michigan. Please post photos if you have any.
All the best,
Jordan
THis is my first year with the C4S but I plan to drive it through the winter. I have just bought a set of snow tires and a spare set of wheels and hope to switch over this weekend.

I drove mine (Yoko AVS winters) today which is a great example of winter magic on our roads, no problems. I drive the C2 all year round. The only time I regretted driving the C2 was on REALLY slick freezing rain where the rear engine weight pendulum thing made itself obvious. That day driving anything was insane just more so with $100K.
Actually I think Porsches galvanize process is better than most...........I have heat & drain in the garage........cars get washed probably about the same frequency in winter as summer (1-2 times/week).
Driving all-wheel Pcars in the winter is a hoot. I have eithe Blizzaks or 210/240s on ea car..........You can easily leave SUVs far behind and in the corners.........well, its great practice for summer autocross.
Lifes too short to not have fun driving.
Like I said I drive mine everyday. If I know it's going to snow, alot, I will take the train in, otherwise I drive. I was caught in both blizzards last year with summer tires, the car did ok, just ok. I am going to pick up some snow tires this yr though.
I do clean it often, to lessen salt exposure. I think these cars are meant to be driven daily, the ones that seem to have problems tend to be garage queens or sunny day only cars.
Drive your cars!
I drive my C4 daily. Put snows on and it does fine. This will be the first winter since I lowered it. That might prove interesting if we get some deep snow!
Got the tires from another Rennlister - used but only with about 500 miles on them. They are sitting in my garage waiting for the wheels that I bought off eBay recently (should be here tomorrow...)

This will be my 4th winter with the 996 C2. I do take off the 18" summer tires and put on 17" winters. The 17" tires allow me to due through the touch free car wash. I also put on those ugly black clip-on mud flaps from Tweeks to protect the rear bumper. They salt/sand the roads heavily here in Northern Virginia. I had the paint sand blasted off my wifes BMW a couple of years ago due to heavy sanding. The 996 is just fine up to 3-4 inches of snow. I really havn't driven it in anything deeper. Icy roads deserve caution in any vehicle, including the 996. The 996 has an excellent heating and defrost system.
I drove my previous 911 through 5 winters. Trying to get an air cooled 911 to warm up enough to defrost the windshield at 10 degrees is a feat that requires a ceramic heater sitting on the dash.
Have fun and watch out for the SUV's that will blow by you at unsafe speeds only to do a triple spin in the middle of the road ahead of you.
My intention was to drive mine through the winter. I have new Dunlop winters -which are great - have been out in a few snow storms and I have 3M shield on the front. However, I must admit that I haven't been driving it daily for the past few weeks. It's mostly because I have options (Highlander) and many days it's just seemed too ugly out there. I still worry about rock chips and about other drivers.
Maybe when I have owned it for longer time I will be less protective. I will keep it licensed so that it's avaiable on better days. I agree with those who say that it's not good for the cars to sit for months.
Its good to hear this. I will be using the C4 this winter. Just bought a pair of winter wheels of a fellow rennlister and look forward to getting them on soon!!!
I drive mine till the first big snow that is going to stay till spring. Then I put it away. The roads are always sloppy and full of pea gravel after the permanent snow. (:
I drive my ttX50 in everything. Just put the snows on. I've never understood the "don't get it dirty" mentality. The car cleans up fine, and all of my Porsches have been fun in the snow. AS
Winter tires on my C4S...Snowsport 240s. Not quite a daily driver (due to travel), but I do plan on driving it. This will be my first winter with the car!
StephenB...are the "clip-on" mud flapps really clip-ons with no drilling required ???? Where did you get them ? Souds hugly, but a good idea nonetheless....
I just had the 17" Winter Dunlop 2's and the hardtop is on... yup I'm ready. Drive my car all year round in all kinds of weather... and in case anyone inquires about the 17" rims/tires on the C4S you will need 25mm rear and 6mm front spacers. Rides fantastic!
Everyday, Snow, Rain Or Whatever, Sometimes I switch from my 996 Targa to my Boxster - Both have Winter Tires and spare wheels mounted and ready to go. I just ordered a new set of wheels and Winter tires from tire rack (they should be here this week) for my 996. Although I do love the way the 986 handles in the winter. Like a go cart on ice, what a trip. I have never had a problem in the last four season of winter in Northern New Jersey. I will post a picture of my new wheels and runnber later this week. For those of you who feel your 996 will not handle in the winter - FEAR NOT , These cars can drive in snow without a problem.
Everyday, Snow, Rain, Sun, Wind....
it is a car with 4 wheels in the end of the day...
do not really understand why people say....: i use it only when it is sunny....
why?
happiness can be achieved in all weather conditions.....especially in snow....
Mbergeron:
Yes they do clip on. No drilling. I have the ones posted in the link provided above. They come off easy with a small falt blade screwdriver. Yes they are ugly! Especially with the 17" wheels and narrow tires. What a sight to behold.
Mine is a C2 and I drive it year round. It's a blast in the snow with sport snow tires. Traction control on and you go great. Turn it off and get good experience catching a slide at a low practice speed. The experience helps for summer track use, especially in the rain.
