Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I am that close to taking possession of a 1999 speed yellow manual Carrera C2 The car has some issues, as per PPI. The brakes need replacement and the cam cover needs resealed. Some misc. other things, but these are the majors, I think. Where is the 'go-to' place to purchase OEM parts? I would like to do the brakes myself. Is the cam cover seal a DIY? I have had BMW's in the past and am good w/ the wrench when necessary..... Thank You,

POST 2Original post

PelicanParts.com,SuncoastPorsche(in Fla). Others will chime in no doubt. When will you get your SY996?Do you know which options it has? Welcome to a great forum.

POST 3Original post

Welcome to the club. PICS when you can. Plenty of DYI help here. Brakes are a snap! Let us know when you need something.

POST 4Original post

Welcome! I just bought a '99 C2 Manual coupe as well, so I share your excitement. Sunset Porsche in Oregon sent me some rotors for dirt cheap. I was shocked at the prices, and Nate in service was exceptional. Spent 20 minutes on the phone with me reading out my car's option codes since my hood sticker is missing.

POST 5Original post

Sunset Imports in Oregon will sell OEM parts at cost +15% shipping/handling (no tax). You can access them through Renntech.org, which I recommend joining (after you join Rennlist, of course). As mentioned, brakes are easy. Welcome to the forum.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm still debating the price of the car. Does anyone know about the cam seal replacement? Is it a DIY? The options will be decoded, as soon as I get those codes under the hood. Thank You for the contacts! Pics will follow, if they accept my price..........

The camshaft cover also forms the upper half of the bearings the cams ride in. Because of this, you need the special tool to support the ends of the camshafts when the cover is removed. With the tool, it is probably a DIY.

POST 8Original post

Welcome! Enjoy the C2, I'm sure you'll love it. This is a great place to share the passion of the P car. As someone else mentioned, renntech.org is a great site for DIY info. I've found sunset porsche has the best prices for oe parts. Cheers, Stan

Now that sounds expensive. Thanks everyone! Sunset it is..........

POST 10Original post

Sunset is the best place for OEM parts. If you are willing to go aftermarket on things such as the brake pads and discs, there are a million different places. Additionally, Pelican has a handy parts locator diagram that lets you pick your part out of a diagram then it gives you the part number, info, and all that jazz. Very useful.

I am planning on a DIY for this. You need the cam holder 9643 (should be easy to make but I am not going to try,) new cam cover bolts with integrated threadlock, Porsche sealant and cam end plugs. It should be a good time to do spark plug tubes and o rings as well. I think the best way to do this is to remove the rear bumper, muffler, and heat shield so there are a lot of bolts which are possibly seized. It's also a good time to do the PSE mod to the mufflers...

That sounds like a solid plan. Have you found a price on the cam holder?

POST 14Original post

Haven't looked yet but it's a piece of bar steel with three screws. If it's too much I will do a DIY for a cam holder.

POST 15Original post

DIY for that part shouldn't be too difficult. Just need to pop the cam caps to see what it needs to mate with.

POST 16Original post

The workshop manual shows the holder clearly. Three M8 bolts. Two heads contact the cam ends.

Welcome and just make sure it is not the spark plug tubes leaking they can drip down on the cover and it looks like that is the part that is leaking. Tube seals is easy vs the cam cover itself from what I have read.

Welcome. I just joined recently myself and I have to say this forum has been invaluable to me so far. Enjoy your new C2. -

POST 19Original post

You say you are debating on the price.....are you talking low 20's yet for a 99 in need of some attention ? I gotta tell you....the 996 is the new 911. *What I mean to say is that the 996 has been under appreciated too long, living in the shadow of the 911. The early 996 are now getting into the hobby car range and I for one could not be happier. I've been planning on a GT3 in a few years but more and more I want to build a hotrod Mk1 996. Most of the performace at a fraction of the price.
