Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I often times like to keep the top down for times I quickly run errands but the lack of a lockable storage facility would seem like a hinderance for me.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

As bad as this sounds - I have looked on Ebay and Autotrader but for some reason am still having a hard time spotting differences between the older and newer body styles!

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm in the initial stages of looking at 996 cabrios. I've read up on all of the differences between the 1999-2001 models and the 2002+. I understand the horsepower differences, improved cooling, improved interior, and improved structural rigidity BUT when I look at photos to compare the two styles I still cannot seem to be able to spot the differences. Would anyone mind posting some comparison photos so that I can see these differences side by side? Also when it comes to the pre-2002 vehicles, is there a lockable storage compartment in place of the standard glovebox? I often times like to keep the top down for times I quickly run errands but the lack of a lockable storage facility would seem like a hinderance for me. Thanks everyone!

POST 2Original post

Have you looked at eBay? There is more pics than you hope to look at. The most glaring change is the front end on the exterior. Lights and front bumper as different. Interior had some minor changes as well. But the lights were the big deal since 996 owners didn't like having the Boxster lights so as to get confused with the "entry model" car.

POST 3Original post

I was just going to post what Dell suggested...ebay has more than enough pics for you to get a idea. The headlights are the most noticeable change. As for the lockable glovebox, IIRC the pre-2002s just have a open slot under the steering wheel. It looks open and unlocked.

POST 4Original post

Pre '02's don't have glove boxes, just a lockable center arm rest. The slit is used to hold the owner's manual.

POST 5Original post

The center arm rest has a lockable storage unit and if you want there is a company that sells an add on that gives you an extra 3 inches of storage space with leather arm rest for around $400 that includes 2 cup holders that pop out. Other than that just pop your hood and through it in and click your lock button.

POST 6Original post

For a pre-02', if you want to know what the front end looks like then look a 986 Boxster. In my rearview mirror, I can't tell the difference unless I can see the side or back of the car.

POST 7Original post

Man - we need a "sticky" thread about pre and post '02 models. This topic comes up at least once per month (at least is seems that way to me)!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry about the repeat question but I do thank everyone for the answers! As bad as this sounds - I have looked on Ebay and Autotrader but for some reason am still having a hard time spotting differences between the older and newer body styles! Doesn't matter - as has been said here time and time again I will simply purchase the one that makes me happiest...
