POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I want to introduce myself as the proud owner of a 2002 C2. I bought her from a dealer in Plano Texas last month and drove it back to my home in California. This was a one owner lease car from the Sacramento area that went to auction when the lease was up and somehow ended up at this dealer in Plano. Has 44K Miles, silver outside and grey leather interior, 6spd, power/memory/lumbar seats, supple leather and Xenon lights. I was watching this car on Ebay for about six weeks when I finally made a deal with the seller for $45k including a 3yr ext warranty. The 1400 mile road trip home was fun. I was actualy a bit dissapointed with the feel on the road, really seemed kind of floaty, wanting to dart off in other directions after a dip or bump in the road. When I got home I noticed the rear P-Zeros were worn from 70% tread to 10%. A string alignment in my garage revealed that the left rear had nearly 1/2" of rear toe-in. Seams that at some point recently the rear trailing arm had taken a sharp hit and was bent - maybe from the truck ride from the auction to the dealer? Replaced the arm ($250) and put on the RoW 050 kit and a professional alignement, now the car feals great. Now that I got a few of the used car issues sorted out I am really starting to enjoy this car. I drive it a few days each week on my 50 mile commute to work which includes about 25 miles of the best twisties in southern california (Ortega HIghway)...the car is made for this kind of road! For a car with 44K miles it feals tight and like new, a real testimate to how well built these cars are. I wish I would have bought a 911 long before now...I love it! Before deciding to purchase I used this forum to research extensively. Thanks to everyones participation on this forum it helped me to feel good about mmy used car purchase. Thanks, Mark

Welcome and congratulations on your new P-car! I too have an '02 996 C2 and absolutely love it!

POST 6Original post

Mark - Welcome and Congrats on getting thr P-car. Plus, you posted pics right away so Dell won't be hounding you for pics! (Hi Dell! )

POST 7Original post

And he already has clear side markers so we can't hound him on that...

POST 8Original post

Welcome I saw that car I think at Boardwalk. Very clean. The best part is that someone bought a car in Dallas that I was not asked to look at. After the option code debacle on Gant's ride I am out of the business

POST 9Original post

Welcome! Car looks beautiful! I live out in Palm Springs. The Ortega Highway cuts out this direction doesnt it? Its the 73 or something right? Ive taken that freeway before, very fun! Congrats on the new car! I just went through my used car issues as well. I just bought my car about 3 weeks ago now. I LOVE it!

POST 11Original post

Steven - Seriously, I don't think you should blame yourself for that situation. I don't think that arr0gant blames you. The bottom line is that on any purchase the buyer is responsible for the "due diligence" on the car.

POST 12Original post

Tim You are right and Gant is not mad at me, but I still feel bad about it. Oh well.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, Yeah, I thought I had better had pics in my first post to avoid the newbie slap. Steve, I got the car from SGautogroup in Plano which is a net seller (no storefront), but funny you mention Boardwalk as they are on the chain of title. For some reason that I dont understand the car was passed around among a number of dealers after it was bought from auction until I saw it offered by SGautogroup. California auction > Palomino motors > Park Place > Boardwalk > SG autogroup all within a few days??? I probably dont want to know why. Next time I buy a car in your area I'll make sure to ask you to check it out first Outskirts, your not too far away, if you ever need to head toward San Juan Capistrano you can plan a fun route over the Santa Ana Mountains using Ortega Highway or Highway 74. On the weekends lots of folks drive it just for fun on their bikes or sports cars, a popular stop is Hells Kitchen which bills itself as a motorsports cafe, in fact the cafe owner has a heavily modded 996 turbo. Next Mod: I bought some used mufflers on Ebay the other day. I would like to make the modifications to convert them to PSE sounding exhausts. i'll let you guys know how it turns out.

What is it about Texas dealers that just gives me the *******?? Oh I know, this story and Arr0gants!

POST 17Original post

I was born in Texas so I probably am not a good judge of Texas auto dealer integrity versus the rest of the country. I have also bought 3 cars off of either Ebay or a dealer on the internet and have never gotten screwed so I guess I am due a bad experience? Gant got a good car this go around except for the details so I would not say he is batting 0. I would do the same amount of homework no matter where the car is but it is an imperfect world If I am ever lucky enough to be your way I will take you up on that drive Have fun with the new car!

POST 20Original post

Very nice car, congratulation! I am also curious on your 1400 miles drive from Plano (TX) to CA. How long did it take you to complete the drive? I may need to take up the same drive in October for my new job, going from San Jose to Plano (TX). I will take it easy and do it in 3 or 4 days, relax-mode. Was it a smooth drive, any part that I should avoid based on your experiences? I won't drive the P-car though, instead I may drive my E39. Should be a fun drive... Please let me know. Thanks,

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The trip was quite an adventure. Left at 5am just as the sun was coming up, driving west was like I running away from the rising sun, it seemed to always be low in my rearview mirror. Drove into a speed trap at about 100MPH in west Texas (the cops have black pickup trucks!), radar detector saved me, hew. About ten minutes later a cop pulls me over, he spotted me from the roadside while giving someone else a ticket as I passed by, he just looked over the car and then advised me to use my turn signals when passing others, no ticket, hew! Had a late lunch in El Paso. Just crossed into New Mexico and the radar is going off like Bagdad at night, came over a hill and there was about a dozen cops pulling the speeders over, got through that without a ticket, hew! Late in the afternoon the sky turned black and it started pouring rain, I have never seen rain that hard, the front end feels really light driving through the standing water. Five minutes later it was over and the sky cleared, I guess it was a Monsoon. Got into Phoenix Arizona around 7pm, crashed out her on the west side for the night. Again left town as the sun was coming up, was in my office chair at 10:30am in Costa Mesa. Observations of the Porsche from the trip: 1. The radio sucks, I can barely hear it at 80mph, depends alot on the road noise from differing pavement types. It's not that it is not loud enough, it just is not clear enough. Is Bose better for this? 2. Road Noise is really loud, I cant recall driving anything with so much 3. Speedometer must be at least 5MPH high 4. Speed in this car is deceiving, 85 feels like 60mph, 110 feels like 80.... 5. 27.5 MPG, at least 400+ miles from a tank 6. Sometimes get a buzzing sound from the left air outlet - depends on pavement type 7. Car feels strange going over dips, wants to dart off in other directions because of rear alignment problems. But the best part of the trip was pulling off the road to slow down and downshift.....accelerating back onto the freeway just to hear that sweet flat-six music!

POST 22Original post

Wow,great deal,I am looking for a nice 996 also.

POST 23Original post

The radio is bad. I replaced speakers which helped a bit, but it is still bad. Big tires on pavement in a small car is a recipe for road noise. But, I think for what it is, it is not bad. My last car was far worse. Cars designed for handling will not feel as stable at speed other cars. Nice car. Have a blast with it.

POST 24Original post

Thanks for the detailed trip summary, you did it fast I plan to take more time to get to Plano since I will be driving the big E39 with my wife and our little ****zu, plus some luggages. My P-car will be shipped over there and my company will pay for it. For me the sun will be in our eyes which is worse I think, going east. I plan to stop 2 nights on the way for resting. Looks like I will be needing my V1 just in case. I have been to Richardson (TX) area quite a few times already for work and did hear from the locals that the police has been very tough with speeders. Your story verifed that. Also your observations on the 996 are very true. The radio is indeed bad and I asked the Forum before if there was an optimum DSP settings that would help with the music clarity and got no answers, Oops! I think most people here don't bother to listen to the music, but for you, it was a long drive though. As you said turning the volume does not help. Anyway, thanks again for your feedbacks.
