Still, if you get a 996 with over 60K miles....and the CAF has not been changed...Porsche never did the 60K service on it.

I'd say that it's an ok test for lack of maintenance but not for confirmation of good maintenance.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After buying a used 996, 59K miles on it....you can tell if it was cared for or not just by the cabin air filter. If it looks dirty like mine...suspect you need maintenance in the future. I did talk to some people at work though...this is the devils advocate.... Most of the people could care less what at cabin air filter is as long as the A/C works. But, if you have a ancient cabin air filter...your Porsche was probably not serviced at the dealer....food for though. Any opinions on this? It is such a cheap and easy job though. I understand Porsche charges alot for this, but getting a charcoal one shipped to your house and 2 min install....$25 bucks.

POST 2Original post

indy put a charcoal in mine for giggles and price

POST 3Original post

Most just forget about it once they start doing their own DIY maint.

POST 4Original post

It seems to be a minor maintainance item to me, but having said that, I replaced mine after reading inputs on the internet.

POST 5Original post

I have to admit.... my old one was very dirty, but not on my watch!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I still say, if you buy a used 996...it could be a sign of neglect. Yes, some people think that filter is pointless....but it does serve a purpose. If you pay over $30 for one and pay Porsche to install it.....you should be ashamed. Just my 2 cents. Still, if you get a 996 with over 60K miles....and the CAF has not been changed...Porsche never did the 60K service on it. Seems like lots of people get rid of a 996 at the 60K mark....call it finances or demographics.

POST 7Original post

I replaced mine by the book, and it was pretty dirty. Put in the cheapo $11 filter. We don't use our AC around here much. It rains... a lot. I'd say that it's an ok test for lack of maintenance but not for confirmation of good maintenance. It's very possible someone could neglect the car, but replace this item (or have it replaced) just before selling it.

I agree...but if you get a used 996 with about 60K on it...the 60K MX was not done. Most people bail out of some of these cars around then. I was in this position. Serpentine belt was wasted...changed....got a new fuel filter, changed what I could myself. Just a caution to others who buy a 996. Also...depending on climate...the hoses will dry rot and crack. Look at those also. Spark plug change at 60K....personally...wasted money.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 8436467

Agree. I guess people think that after 60k the car is done! They are wrong! This is when the best years of our cars begin!

POST 11Original post

Seems to me I have known guys who really spent time on the mechanics of their car...but washing and interior were not priorities. Others...spend an enormous amont of time in stylistic additions...but couldn't tell you how an engine works. I think I'd be most concerned if a car was stylized...but the filter and other minor items showed that the owner was a poser rather than an enthuiast. Just a caution rather than sufficient grounds to walk away.

POST 12Original post

Got my car with 34k miles and filter looked like was never touched. The the rest of the car seemed immaculate and checking up on it looked like all service was performed so in my case did not mean much at all. Going on 42k trouble free miles.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8437036

I agree 100%, I love the heck out of mine, but always make sure my maintenance on every car I own is always done. Makes the cars last much longer than a neglected car. I am not a mechanic, but I can do minor stuff on cars that saves me money in the long run. The way I look at my 996 is I got a great deal on it used.....someone bought it full price and got tired of it.....I reap the benefits as long as I keep the maintenance up.

POST 14Original post

I replace my cabin air filter religiously, even though my car is a cabrio and I almost always drive it with the top down. Does that make me crazy?

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 8438180

Just a public service....cleaning the environment as you drive.

POST 16Original post

38k on my new to me '02 Carrera. Bought from dealer. Brand new cabin air filter listed, brand new cabin air filter installed. Me likey.

POST 17Original post

I never changed mine when i had my boxster. Mainly b/c the top was always down. I do replace them in my other vehicles though.

POST 18Original post

Thanks for this thread. I changed mine - definitely hadn't been done for a while (40K miles on my pcar). Great prices and fast delivery from Pelican!!

POST 19Original post

I remember a few years ago I was doing a PPI on a Boxster and I pulled out the filter and there was a large hole where some rodent had chewed through and got into the dash! Safe to say I strongly recommended that he pass on the car.... I always check them to get a good overview of the car but I wouldn't base the decision on it.

POST 20Original post

Recently when I changed the one on my Cayenne it was full of broken glass! Having purchased the Cayenne from the CEO of my company I knew that it had a large piece of ice go blasting through the windshield so that explained that. Otherwise the filter was nice and clean
