Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

IMHO, I definitely favor any used car that includes "all records since new"...all other things being at least similar or proportionate to one another.

If a qualified mechanic gives a car a clean bill of health, then to me the car that is best optioned would be my choice

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
Considering 2 different cars for purchase.
1. 1999 996, blk/blk, 39685 miles, 2 owner, California car, all books and records, $25000. Clean car fax.
WP0AA2999XS621699
2. 2004 996, blk/blk, 77392 miles, 4 owners, $27888. Clean car fax. VIN #:
WP0AA29924S622673
Of course I would have a PPI before I pull the trigger, but I think the '04 may be overpriced and and I like the miles on the '99.
Any comments from the experts for a new guy?
Thanks much.
The market still favors the '04 model year (less than 10 years old - can still get easy financing.) It's telling that these 2 cars, although 5 years apart, sold for similar prices. I believe in another 2 years pricing across the entire 996 line will be a function of mileage and condition alone. That said, the price for the '99 is a bit high IMHO (coupe, plastic interior.) I would HIGHLY recommend going with a full-leather interior.
If the PPI reflects favorably on the 04, that would be my choice. Mileage, how many previous owners to me are less important. If a qualified mechanic gives a car a clean bill of health, then to me the car that is best optioned would be my choice
So even thought the 04 has almost twice as many miles as the 99, you would still go for the 04?
The PPI on the 99 is in good ship. Don't have it for the 04.
Going to look at both this afternoon.
Thanks very much for the help.
IMHO The 99 coupe is way over priced. Should be 20000 top whack and no more. That's more in line with a 99 convertible price. No matter the mileage. It has the double race bearing going for it and that's about it.
The obvious winner is the 2004 with the 3.6 engine even with the higher mileage. At least if the ims was going to go it would have gone by now. If you could get that for $25000 you would make a great deal IMHO. If you have proof of all preventative maintenance completed at 60000 you are on a winner. It's a no brainer.
BTW if the PPI has been done by the dealer then sling it through the window and get an independent ppi done on the one you are really interested in buying. The one that pleases your senses.
I have spoken to Hanz at RAC several times back when I bought mine from a dealer. RAC did the PPI and some work the dealer agreed to pay for. Hanz seems like a nice guy but they did miss some things on the PPI and left some bolts loose when they RR the transmission mount. An honest mistake I'm sure.
Both cars seem priced high for current trends. The later model has a larger and much improved engine over the 99 but more miles, so its a trade off. I would think your better off with the 2004. Prices will continue to nosedive so you may as well throw 996 TT's in the hunt.
Just returned from driving both and have to say that I like the ride and drive of the 99 better. Here are the options on the 99.
- Power Seat Package - $1,520
- Supple Leather Seats Front & Rear - $390
- All-Leather Seats (Full Leather Option) Black - $3,215
- CD Shelf Center Console - N/C
- Wheel Caps with Colored Crest $170
- HI-FI Sound Pkg w/ Speakers - $600
- AM/FM Radio with CD Player - $315.00
I like how the car is total stock and there are records from day one.
They are doing me right on my trade in. Just need to work on the price.
If this is what you want, then go for it!!!!!! I'm sure no matter what you get, you are going to be very happy. I saw the car on line and it looks terrific. Try and get the price down around $20K and a full tank of gas.
The MkII's (2002-2004) are hands down my preference for 996's... Opinions vary (as shown above), but the improvements made over the life cycle of the 996 were significant.
Go for the '04! :-)
I can't say anything about your choice as I have the 99 cab C2 and even though I never drove any other Porsche, The one to better mine would have to be something really spectacular. So I say go for the 99 but try to get him down some in price. 2 years ago I gave $27500 for mine with 44000 on the clock. However mine is the cabriolet which is approx. $5000 more than the coupe of the same year. Has 3 spoke steering wheel. 18 inch sports classic wheels. You are still looking at paying $20 grand top whack I think IMHO. Don't forget to get an independent PPI on it.
Good for you. I bought a MY99 in 06' with 35k miles and honestly, I couldn't be happier. I really enjoy the handling and ride, the power is so linear and the steering communicates everything. Many Porsche owners
will tell you to buy something else, another year or something air cooled. Glad you bought the car that felt right to you.
As usual, it's tough (impossible?) to get a consensus amongst rennlisters, especially when "how much is this car worth" messages come up.
IMHO, I definitely favor any used car that includes "all records since new"...all other things being at least similar or proportionate to one another. (Like humans, every car has a past; so before I commit, show me your data.)

I've Always Seen People Say Buy the Newest Model You Can Afford! I've Never Really Agreed With That & Not Really Sure WHY They Say It (to Me Newer Models Aren't Always Better Looking Cars, Maybe Just Better Build Quality & Improved Interiors?) But, In Your Case I Agree With Going With the O4'! jmo!
Congrats on the purchase, looks like a clean car. I thought your comment was interesting regarding your preference for the early car. I've owned two 1999s, one 2001, and a 2003. Of the four, the 996.2 was my least favorite. It was a better looking car with a much nicer interior, but was really just too refined for my taste. I think the 996.1 strikes a better balance between everyday civility and raw sports car.
