Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I am in the process of freshening up my suspension. Do the 996 tierods wear/fail in the same manner as the 993s, ie. the inner hard rubber end begins to crack? I have no issues with my steering, etc... but would if they are a wear item (I have 125K on the clock!) I would like to replace them at the same time as my other suspension components. Thanks in advance! Best, TomF

POST 2Original post

I picked up a car with roughly 65k on it. One of the front tie rods had already been changed out and the other was pretty shot. The rears probably had some life left in them, but I was changing out to adjustable tie rods so they went as well. Definitely and easy DIY job.

You must be referring to the drop links. The tie rods are outboard of the steering unit. Unless you have 4-wheel steering like my old Prelude 2.0si! Thanks, TomF

POST 4Original post

sorry, tie rods in front, toe links in back. They basically attach to the wheel carrier the same way. Obviously different attachment points on the inner side.

POST 5Original post

The toe links are a fancy name for control arms.

POST 6Original post

I'm at 150k plus. Tie rods are fine, my drop links rattle though.

I will be replacing the drop links, but wondered about the tie rods. At about $190 a pair, it may be worth it to replace them. Any thoughts about upper strut mounts? I have a C4 and I have heard how they fail pretty badly. I need relative comfort, not teeth-jarring like with mono *****. I wonder if there is a good compromise between OEM at $192 each an full monoballs? Thoughts?
