Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a friend that has a 1999 996 black / black sunroof coupe. 70,000 miles. It will need A/C repair (leak near the evap, $ 1650 @ Porsche dealership) and door window regulators need to be replaced.
Car looks great throughout, but has a three foot key scratch on the rear fender and door.
Pass or make an offer ? I'm torn and Confused
No one, absolutely no one, but you can answer that question.
If you like the car, can get it for a good price, and can put some cash into fixing the AC and probably some other stuff, go for it.
Have a mechanic check it first, so that there are (hopefully) no major surprises.
[Oh, and find a good local mechanic who specializes in Porsches. Don't have any of the repair work done at the dealer].
I knew someone would say that. He wants $ 15,000, but i know it needs $ 3,000 that I can see. He just replaced the water pump and had a tune up. We have the same mechanic. Funny thing is I just sold a 2006 Jeep and have the cash. The 996 is so much more for the same money.
I love my 930, but I am starting to want the "creature comforts" of a newer toy.
I second the local mechanic! I also think that almost any car you find will have something you want to do to it... the question is just how much time and money you want to put into refurbishment. Often you can really take your time and customize your car to make it yours if you buy something that isn't perfectly "cherry." For me, I like buying something that needs a little TLC and fixing it up. That's partly how I get to know the car, and how it becomes mine in the process of fixing/customizing. But of course, there are those that just want to buy and have it all perfect... so you have to decide that for yourself!
Not sure what you feel the actual value of the car is... $3K is a lot of money, but as you already know, that's almost cheap when it comes to fixing up a Porsche! You, of course, don't have to purchase your friend's car... take your time and shop around. The $15K price could be more than fair, depending on options. I didn't know about all the things my car didn't have when I bought it, but then I slowly learned why others were more... litronic headlights, heated seats, etc.
Don't forget to factor in $2800 for a new clutch/IMS/RMS. $15k sounds like a good deal from a random party but not from a friend. I missed a deal on 99 with 63k, great condition and new clutch/IMS/RMS for $17k and still regret it.
Ended up buying a 2002 Targa with 77k for $19k, repairs on small items (door latches/window regulators/frunk latch/etc) added up to $3k, quite a bit more than expected. Sounds like a good deal at the time but after everything ended up paying about market price to get it up to a snuff, and I still have the clutch/IMS/RMS worry in the back of my mind. Love every minute I drive it, though!
I think he is high and what's his financial state? Has the car been neglected? I never had a PPI done but I do all my own work and the car is a toy, if it sits in the garage for 6 mos till I have the money for a proper fix.. No problem.
I think he is about 5000 to high needing 3000 worth of work. Plus whatever else it may need.
I bought mine 3 years ago for 15K it was a 96,000 mile factory aero. The guy claimed it to be "prefect"
After I bought it, 4000.00$ later, it was my version of perfect. and it wasn't that the guy screwed me. He was just an over educated moron that knew little about what he was talking about.
So many things to consider.
If this isn't just a toy and you are going to rely on it for daily transportation and/or you cant/don't do your own work. Have a PPI done and go from there. But if a "friend" came to me on this car, and if your description is accurate, Id be 8-10K tell him 13K if he has the AC fixed paint work done and a PPI and all little issues fixed.
15K on a non aero 996 is clean clean clean money.. The car doesn't sound clean
First I never buy cars from friends (or family), sell cars to friends (or family).
If you feel ok doing "business" with a friend, then if the car is in otherwise good shape and you get the price adjusted to account for what the car needs then buy the car.
A few relatively minor issues like an AC problem, door regulators, and scratch are not deal killers in my book.
But I would not pay money for the car in the condition it will be in *after* the work before the work was done. There is no way you as a buyer should bear that burden, that cost. That is on the sellers shoulders.
But will he see it that way? If he doesn't then "no sale".
Also, you have to ask yourself what will happen to your relationship with your friend if you buy the car and a week after say the engine blows up?
I never do any "business" and this means car sales/purchases with friends or family (oh and co-workers too).
Speaking of high, $8-10k for a good running and driving 996 with 70k? Please point me to those cars, I'll buy them all day long. $15k for a good 996 is still a damn good deal.
It's my opinion that if the guy can't caugh up 1700 to fix the ac, a lot of other things have been let go. Just for shuts and giggles.... Does the horn blow? Is it coming from a state that has no annual safety inspection? If so, I promise it need breaks. My estimate is based on the info
I have been given. All between the lines at this point and it doesnt look good. Also the scratch? Why didn't insurance repair this? They did and he cashed the check and never had it repaired. Call me crazy but after buying 11 928's 2 944 to repair and flip... You learn fast to see what others do not.
