Before I had my 928 on a dyno, I used a website to calculate the HP based on the drag strip times.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In the past few weeks I have drag raced, and ran my car on a dyno. The car is a bone stock 99' C2 with a 6 speed. Our local track is notorious for terrible prep and I am in need of new rear tires, that being said (excuses out of the way) I do believe I could peel off a few more tenths but either way it was fun. The time slip... I was impressed with the dyno numbers as well, I don't have a dyno sheet yet, but on a very hot and humid day out of two pulls on a Dynojet it managed 262whp and 246ft/lbs

Those dyno numbers are pretty good. Your 60 ft times are great as well for a 2wd. Reaction of course doesn't matter in your 1/4 mi times but not too shaby either. Congrats and thanks for the stock figures.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No problem, it hooked just fine but I think with a tad stickier tire I could launch it harder, I usually don't even try to focus on reaction or my launch usually gets jacked haha. I believe I could run a solid 13.5 with it locally.

POST 4Original post

Well done, not bad numbers in the 1/4. Just remember the clutch disk on these cars is very small for the power the engine makes. Not much bigger than what a Civic has. Better to have a little tire spin at launch than really sticky tires. Actually you get a better take off if the tires spis just a little. My double dick clutch on the 928 lasted well even with the supercharger (had dozens of 1/4 mile runs) until one night when they prepped tge track for a pro race and caused the tires to hook up too well. That was the end of my discks.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yea I know that, stickier was probably a bad choice of words, I mean a newer street tire I suppose, the tires on the car have good tread but have been on the vehicle for quite some time. My car was one of those that sat for long periods in a garage. I think a newer tire would allow for a marginally harder launch, either way I'm realistic I think it has a 13.5 in it.

0.3 sec is quiet a bit when you are in the 13s, I'm not sure only a pair of tires will do it. My rule is not to speculate on what might do in the 1/4 but just stick with what it did.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh I'm with you 100%, a 13.8 is definently what it did, call the 13.5 a goal rather, I pulled that after three passes trying different launches, that last one being the most effective, some tires and more finess plus seat time I think its capable. I will update if I ever do.

POST 9Original post

What was the ambient air temp and humidity? Which OEM wheels do you have on your car? Did you pull the spoiler fuse or disconnect it? Stock tire pressures?

POST 10Original post

Cool!!! Drag racing is not my thing but it's nice to see someone on here actually using their car instead of just riding their keyboard while bitching about their IM* *******. 13.8 sec. in the 1/4 mile is very good but I agree with you that you could go faster. IIRC, when the 996 first came to the U.S. in '99, Motor Trend tested a stock C2 and achieved a 1/4 mile time of 13.4 sec. @ 105 MPH. Also, your torque figure looks VERY strong. Porsche listed the torque spec for the MKI 996 at 258 FT/LBS at the crank, so putting down 246 FT/LBS to the wheels is awesome. I think your car is a ringer...

Nicely put, and nice to see a 14 year old car still pull strong numbers.

POST 12Original post

You have to be very careful with dyno numbers. Many shops have a high reading dynos to appeal to their customers. Shops that do this attract more cuatomers because owners like to see high numbers. Dynos should only be used to compare upgrades and nothing more. If this car was actually making the those dyno numbers than the 1/4 times would reflect it. It would be easy to match the magazine numbers and even beat them with little effort. Before I had my 928 on a dyno, I used a website to calculate the HP based on the drag strip times. Those are more realible as it uses the vehicle weight, distance (1420feet) and your know and accurate time slip. Just have to make sure the weight is accurate.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

stock tire sizes, stock pressures, they are 18in twists. The dyno was a charity event locally, about 25-30 cars went, and although I'm not swearing by the numbers, everything that went seemed to run what its "supposed too" but even then I realize that its a tool for modifications. I did it just because. At the track I didn't pull any fuses or lower tire pressure, I'm not a die hard drag racer just like to have fun. I staged waited for the lights dropped the clutch and rowed through the gears till the end... thats it.

POST 14Original post

Great runs man. Based on you 1/8 times and speed, you pulled some sub 5 second 0-60 times. Very impressive. Source. Paper pushers closed BOTH drag strips in Phoenix metro area at the beginning of 2013. Speedworld was closed indefinitely, Firebird's drag strip will not reopen for the foreseeable future. I was at the Firebird very often during 2012 season, and if not for the idiocy of the local officials my 996 would be in the staging lanes every week this year. Porsches were really under represented at the races last year. There was just one 986 boxster that frequented the strip.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've never even seen another Porsche at our local strip, they are around but not many "enthusiast" drive them here in South Dakota. haha.
