Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Getting pretty frustrated here. The IMS Guardian does not come with any sealant, which is required for installation. The recommended sealant is Loctite 5900, which I couldn't find locally. I found a guy on Ebay selling it, but it came completely solidified--useless. After waiting weeks to do this, I've got finally got a day free today to do the install. Is there any comparable sealant that's available at Pep Boys, AutoZone, etc.?

POST 2Original post

This was a tip from Doug. Napa permatex copper loctite 5920 works great. I've used it and it works well. Be sure to only apply a 1mm to 1.5mm wide bead. Also if you have a Porsche dealership near you they carry the best stuff (drei bond). Not sure if they would have to special order it for you. P/N 00004320373 listed as "ORMD-WINDOW ADHESIVE". It is drei bond though...

POST 3Original post

Any sensor safe type RTV, Loctite, Permatex Ultra Black, Yamabond (Yamaha). Just go to the nearest auto parts store and pick up a tube. Fuel and oil resistant is best, brand is unimportant. Anything made for aluminum motors is fine.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ran out to Pep Boys and they had the Permatex "The Right Stuff". Looks like a similar spec, so I'll give it a try. Thanks!

POST 5Original post

VW dealers also have the dreibond. But the Permatex works fine.

The Permatex product you mention is, as far as I can tell, equivalent to the Loctite product. It has the same working time, squeezes out the same, and cures to the same hardness. Haven't had any issues with leaks with the Permatex.

Mcmaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/#loctite-5900/=ffhd0b I normally get things I order the next day since they have so many distribution locations... -Shawn

POST 8Original post

We sell the Dreibond separately on our site.. I would not recommend any other sealant.

POST 9Original post

Bought Dreibond, $25 at dealership. Clear silicone gasket sealant. Original was black. Wonder why the change? Why it and no other?

POST 10Original post

I just did mine today with permatex red. Be very stingy with the stuff. Just a tiny 1mm bead is best, otherwise it squeezes out into the sump and can clog the oil pickup tube. Less is more.

Black stuff was probably Loctite 5900, both work well but the 5900 is very hard to remove.

POST 12Original post

Go get the Permatex "The Right Stuff- Ultra Grey" that is in the caulking tube style. It is specifically designed for imports and such. I called Permatex's tech line and told them the Loctite equivalent and that's what they told me to use. Has been holding ever since.

That doesn't look like a good choice at all... Your product looks more like a silicon adhesive than gasket compound, and that sort of tube is going to make it very difficult to lay down the very thin bead you are looking for. Permatex 'The Right Stuff' is commonly available at almost all auto parts stores and is much closer to the Porsche specified Loctite 5900 or Drei-bond than that stuff, though the Loctite and Drei-bond should be pretty easily available through either a Porsche or VW dealer. Not getting excess sealant squeezed into the oil pan and having any minor amount that does get squeezed in be very tenacious and not break loose where it can get sucked into the oil intake seems to be much more important than the actual sealing of the surfaces. Most compounds probably will seal just fine... Torque for the oil pan bolts is very light, 10Nm. Remember to tighten in cross pattern. Yes, threadlocker blue on the bolts.

POST 15Original post

Thanks for the advice. I did go to another store and found the Permatex. Everything went well and found very little debris in the pan. I'm sure this was the first time it had been removed on my '99 C2 with 88K miles. Sending oil off to Blackstone for an analysis. Will post results when received.

Be careful, the red RTV contains acetic acid which will etch aluminum. The permatex "right stuff" doesn't have this acid in it.
