Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, After watching the 996 market for the past 2 years I finally found a car that ticked my boxes...'98 MY build C2, Aerokit, non-sunroof, LSD, 6MT, and heated/comfort seats. The Aerokit is not a factory install, it was added somewhere later in life. Originally a German market car, it made its way to Japan for a pampered life and finally on to me here in Vancouver, BC. I already see bits of foam in the air vents, and I have a few other known items to address, but overall the car looks, feels, and smells like new with barely 60K Kilometers (40K miles) on the odometer. I am looking forward to diving in as I am no stranger to Porsche's (15+ years of ownership), or my own mechanical repairs. I have already found this board to be a wealth of information and look forward to learning all I can about this model. Here are a few pictures after the first wash to remove 8 weeks worth of transportation grime.

POST 2Original post

Looks beautiful. How are you detailing it/what type of product are you using? Lucky you, getting a slick top.

POST 4Original post

Wow, that is soooo shiny I can't really see the car. You need to dust it up a little so I can see the actual car, aero kit and goodies, lol. Nice find!!! (I'm partial to black myself, hehehehee)

So far just hit it with a foam cannon, then mitt wash (2 bucket method), and chamois dry. These pictures are before any further detailing but it definitely needs a full clay bar as the paint is rough from air-borne contaminants and sitting in industrial ports for loading/unloading. Once clayed I will see what further correction is needed, hopefully just a good polish and sealant will do it!

POST 6Original post

It looks great! Congratulations. All I'll say is that there is now another 996 that is shinier than mine! I wish you miles of smiles!!!

POST 8Original post

Nice car. Japanese imports are usually in a very good cosmetic condition but because of the low mileage, they suffer from lack of maintenance. I've worked on a couple low mileage 928S4 that came from there and they needed constant repairs because nothing ever was changed. So if you can, start going through the usual stuff. Luckily the 996 doesn't have as many parts that age out as the 928.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17523697

I hear ya! I brought in a 928 S4 from Japan over 15 years ago and had a similar experience. So far this one looks to be maintained much better than what I experienced with the 928, plus I am not sure how long this car actually spent in Japan after export from Germany. No doubt I will have some items that need attention after 23 years, but hopefully not near as big a list as the shark had!

POST 10Original post

Ooohhh, nice find; very beautiful car, definitely a "forever" car for sure. As mentioned before the paint is so smooth and shiny that I can't even distinguish your rear bumper "winglets" aka "Spats", I think I do see them tho, again Congrats... Cheers,

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17523909

Thanks! Yes, hoping this car works out and stays around for a long time. Dusk was upon me when taking these pictures so it is a little hard to distinguish but you are correct...spats are present!

POST 13Original post

Another Vancouverite, congrats! Need some Sports Seats? I've got a black set that would probably be just perfect Congrats, it's a beautiful car.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17524047

Thanks! If I ever decide to try sports seats I know who to look up!

POST 15Original post

Nice looking aero, very shiny indeed! I'm definitely biased, but man does aero look great on a black 996.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17524306

Thanks! I agree, the Aerokit looks right at home in black. I didn't specifically set out to look for a black car but this one came along with the options I wanted..so now I get the added task of keeping a black car looking clean. What was that saying...black cars look better in the shade??

POST 17Original post

DUDE - black, aero kit SLICK TOP As awesome as the day is long. Congrats. ETA if you want to throw up some pics of the Toyota Id be cool with that 🙂

Thanks man! Yes...the '94 4Runner...she's the work horse around here! Awesome machines for slaying gravel logging roads...our go to ride for hidden hot springs!

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 17524613

Nice dude - in my alternate universe - I live in BC, FJ DD and drive to powder shredding spots, beater EVO RS for logging roads and snow hooning and my 996 making 400+WHP for stupid fast road and track use. A guy can dream, right ?

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17524639

LOL! Awesome alternate universe right there! I have shredded so much BC powder in my years (on ski's, board's...and sleds) that my knees are now basically wrecked...hence the new sport of partaking in hot springs soaking!

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 17524613

4Runner and 911 is a primo/practical/awesome 2 car stable, but I might be biased. My 1st 4Runner was a 95 SR5.

POST 22Original post

Absolutely stunning, man. Patience is a virtue. Enjoy in most excellent health.

Current combo is a little different than the Gen 2 days. Overdue to update my thread since the 996 is an all new beast since this pic. And seeing more slick top pics is not helping with pressure on the pocket book...

POST 27Original post

Nice car. I guess 911 and 4Runner go good together

I remember taking my family for a vacation in Nashville a few years ago and noticing a nice Mk1 red aero 996 at a small dealership on the far end of town wondering who would get such a fine car.

I remember buying this red MK1 aero at a small dealership at the far end of Nashville! I wonder if it was around the same time!

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 17525689

Small world Bill. Glad you got a great deal. Even back then I thought it was a slamming good deal on an aero. Today, you should be able to see a lot more than you paid. But I remember thinking the Mk1 Aero was about the sharpest of all 996. I like the Mk2 GT3, but the Mk1 Aero just looks right. Hope you continue to enjoy that car for many years to come.

POST 35Original post

Hilarious. I ordered a Lunar Rock TRD Pro 4runner a month and a half ago. Should arrive in the next few weeks at some point. Trading in my GX460 for it.

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow, so many of us with similar fleets!! What else is out there?? Besides my new to me 996, I also have a 1966 Corvair (affectionately known by the family as the Ice Cream Machine) and a vintage air-cooled Westfalia Vanagon (Allan) that we still camp regularly in. Let's see what ya all got!!

POST 37Original post

Very nice 996! Your detailing skills are fantastic, that car is very clean.

Just my daily, 2015 VW Touareg TDI Lux with some goodies. Love that VW Vanagon passed up a semi clean Synchro like a dumbass back in 2012. Mods: Pre facelift OEM flares OEM brush guard/lip ABT spoiler Vorsteiner VFF 103 wheels 18Z Brembo upgrade Malone Stg 2 Tune And for the reason were all here, my 996.2 with GT Aero and some other upgrades.

Our fleet consists of my 99 C2 (silver/red) and my wifes 88 560SL (black/tan). Not very practical, but fun.

The Touareg/Cayenne TDI's are high on my list, nearly bought a Cayenne Diesel last year. Great looking MK2 car with the Aero! It looks fantastic in grey!

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 17532487

Prices seem to keep going up on clean examples and the Porsche models are trimmed nicely. Theres a dude on the Touareg forums thats working to build a system that removes the terrible HPFP and also upgrade the the turbo internals so you dont have to repipe the intercoolers.

POST 42Original post

The 4runner finally came in, sorry to bump the thread
