Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Anyway the conversation was, make sure all your fuel delivery system is clean, watch your fuel trims, stay on top of cam deviations, check your aos, good coils and plugs, frequent oil changes.
Leading evidence: 'Check aos, good coils and plugs, frequent oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check aos, good coils and plugs, frequent oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Could also be a slipped gear on the IMS, pull the plugs and scope down to inspect the cylinders.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Accelerating in 2nd gear uphill, at 50mph engine starts to miss then really buck and make ugly noises. Check engine light started to flash. I was in the middle of 4 lane road with oncoming cars. I managed to turn key off, depress clutch and coast to a side road. Temperature at start of noise, normal. No sign of liquids leaking from engine. Oil level fine, coolant level 1/4 inch below minimum. Electrical still fine. I let it cool down and tried to start it briefly. It fired right up, but terrible clanking noise. Mileage 139,000. New IMS from SN at 100,000
I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas as to where to start looking. Thanks.
Drop the sump plate and look for metal debris. Could still be the IMSB unless it was a Solution (oil fed plain bearing).
Could also be a slipped gear on the IMS, pull the plugs and scope down to inspect the cylinders.
Either way, sounds like an expensive afternoon.
Sounds like a dropped valve seat or broken timing chain to me. Both of these are the epic failure for the 2002 M96.03 engine, and they happen out of the blue.
Thanks to all that replied. Jake I have often thought about signing up for your online course. I'll probably give you a call. For my own curiosity, I think I'll drop the pan and see what I find. Thanks
The reason why Porsche change to lokasil 2 its exactly the same cheaper. Thats definitely a reason why you see more bore scoring on those. Yes the rod ratio is another reason.
on Saturday at cars and coffee I spoke with two shop owners. Both of them told me that 99s are the best. Anyway the conversation was, make sure all your fuel delivery system is clean, watch your fuel trims, stay on top of cam deviations, check your aos, good coils and plugs, frequent oil changes. Drive it as soon as you start it. I showed them the pics of us cleaning the rads, and both say yeah keep temps as cool as possible. Finally dont get on it until everything is up to operating temp. Just drive it and enjoy it, if for whatever reason is going to fail if you do all of the above then its out of your control.
