Leading evidence: 'cam gear has slipped or the tensioner has failed' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cam gear has slipped or the tensioner has failed' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run cam deviations' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dear Friends, I was about to remove the heads on this 2000 996 with a 5 chains M96 engine, then I notice that when I put the engine on TDC for CYL #1, the exhaust notch on the cam shaft on CYL #4 does not align with the head and and valve cover lines I thought that, CYL #1 in on TDC compression and CYL#4 is on TDC exhaust notches should aling, since I saw many people locking both cam to change and IMS bearing 1-) Question: Is that normal? or the timing on bank 2 for this engine is completely off? 2-) Question: For me just to remove the heads its not something that need my concern right now, right?! 3-) For timing purpose should the chains tensioner ( the 3 of them ) should be on or off for the cam timing ? Also when I turn the engine 360 degrees out of #1 TDC the CYL#4 still not aligned Thanks for the help Ricardo

POST 2Original post

Search the 996 forum for Cam Timing . Here's a thread from a few years ago that may help.

POST 3Original post

1-) Question: Is that normal? or the timing on bank 2 for this engine is completely off? No, that is not normal. Maybe your timing chains are stretched. 2-) Question: For me just to remove the heads its not something that need my concern right now, right?! If you are removing the cam shafts, the alignment is not much of concern. Do make sure you have the right cam holding tools. 3-) For timing purpose should the chains tensioner ( the 3 of them ) should be on or off for the cam timing ? For cam timing purposes, the respective chain tensioners on that cam should be off.

Dear Doug 996InKC Thanks for the reply, I'll take a look on this thread

Dear YelCab, thank you also for the reply! So, assuming that the chain is stretched and I will assume that it's the long one between the crankshaft and the cam sprocket Question: In order for me to be able to change that one I'll have to split the case to be able to change it?! Don't I ?

You would need to split the case, or possibly a master link chain. I don't know if that is available. There are other reasons for this mis-alignment. Your tensioners, your chain ramps etc. Disassemble, inspect and go from there.

POST 7Original post

Most likely the cam gear has slipped or the tensioner has failed on that side. I highly doubt u have stetched a long chain that far. There r no master link parts so u would have to split the case if u needed to do the long chains. Did u run the cam deviations before u took it apart? Next step should be to drop the motor and pull the cam cover. If it were me i would plan on variocam pads, small chains, all 3 tensioners and maybe the long chain guides. U can do them without splitting the case. there is a decent write up for cam removal on pelican and u should buy a bentley manual for refference.
