Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In that case, rubber has a useful life expectancy, so yet another reason to replace the flywheel.

There is also a way to test the flywheel using Durametric if I recall correctly.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am into a 2003 C4S clutch area and have taken out the flywheel. I noticed that the dual mass flywheel makes this clicking noise when I move one plate vs the other plate. Is that normal? Second, what is the torque specs for this flywheel using new bolts? Is there a specific special locking tool that will lock both masses of the flywheel for tightening purposes or you lock one plate and let the other plate twist in the wind.

POST 2Original post

Check out the pelicanparts.com tutorial for DMF inspection and replace. Its a helpful resource. These questions will be answered. I dont believe the DMF should click when twisted. It should flex a certain amount then spring back under tension. Pelican discusses the tolerances. If its original strongly consider replacing it with a new OEM. It will come balanced and trouble free for the next 10-20 years. My original DMF wasnt even balanced - no weights anywhere. New one had welded balance weights.

POST 3Original post

There is also a way to test the flywheel using Durametric if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, the car has to be fully assembled for that though. If it's the original flywheel I would just replace it at this point due to age since the rubber in it is probably pretty worn at this point.

POST 5Original post

Does the factory dual mass flywheel have any rubber in it? The older clutches did. I mention this because I used to have an 88 Carrera, and the rubber failed on the clutch disk, mainly due to age.

POST 6Original post

Yes its a metal-rubber-metal sandwich. Bonded rubber it looks like. Its fairly pliable, more so than say a Superdamper for a GM engine..

POST 7Original post

In that case, rubber has a useful life expectancy, so yet another reason to replace the flywheel.
