Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Check these out' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check these out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I just got myself a 47k miles 996.1! But I'm not driving it cuz the tranny needs attention. 1st gear continuously to make some ticking noise and downshifting from 3rd to 2nd grinds every time. Been calling around for a shop to fix it but not much luck at this time. Been told there's no parts for it, order from Porsche and it's about $10k and who knows when...etc. WTF and I gonna do? I know for sure there's solution to it for less than $10k, just regular transmission shops? Dealers? I'm planning on doing IMS at the same time of course. Oh, I'm in the San Francisco area. Thank you for any input.
Assuming this is a manual 6-speed transmission? Does this happen in all the gears or just 1-2-3?
There are internal parts available for it or go good used.
There is no way to know what exactly is going on unless you ... remove it, strip it down, clean it and inspect it. By then you might as well do some of the preventative maintenance such as gears, sliders, syncros, and some bearings. $10k seems like the high end but you really do not know what all is needed.
Take it out, send it to a Gearbox specialist, and prepare to wait 3 months. Push the car into the garage, cover on, and don't look at it.
Good luck.
sounds like it needs a rebuild.
if you're taking the car to a local porsche mechanic, ask them who they have experience with.
CMS - as mentioned already
Gbox - I had a rebuilt unit from them installed. happy w their service.

if doing transmission r&r - obviously good time to do clutch, rms, ims, aos, etc. it's a big bill, but worth it to get it done right the first time.
